Houston Series Preview

I was over on the Astros' SB Nation site and thought that the fanpost in preparation for the four game series with our Giants was very well written, if a little biased towards the wrong team.  You can find it here.  The poster nailed Zito spot on and even went so far as to say that if Cain is on his game tomorrow they still have a shot because our bullpen will be worn out from the Zito start tonight.  Sigh.  Go Giants!

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Ironically enought I’m in Houston for job training. I live in NM anyway so wouldn’t be going. I just wish the Astros were in town for part of the week at least so I could go to a major league game.

I might go.

Depends if I get motivated to or not, and can find anyone to go with.

I would like to get to the game early and watch Zito warming up.

You're right

I did one yoga routine recently that made me feel dizzy and naseous. Watching Zito makes me feel dizzy and naseous. Damn inversions.

Hmmmm...you're onto something here....

A question for all the ladies out there….what kind of single and available fangirl would willingly attend a Zito outing over any other?

For instance….I’m guessing that the Lowry / Sanchez camps are at odds with each other for the “Oh mai good, he’s sooooooooooo dreamy! His booty looks hawt in those pants!” title.

Zito’s probably very popular with the “skateboarding to work, free-thinking, ukelele playing, bad celebrity boob job, East Bay transplant” types.

Timmy….well because he’s part cyborg, I’m thinking the fembots with a machinegun in their ta-tas would be big fans. The type of woman that can draw a poor and unsuspecting dude into their clutches and can fleece him without him even knowing.

Matty Cain with his bull-ish, farmer-boy good looks is probably big with the flannel wearing, smokeless tobacco chewing, lumberjack kinda woman. Either that or some waify thin midwestern farmers daughter maybe?

(This is where the disclaimer goes regarding rash generalizations and female fandom. We all know there’s only one tk, jprony, or Baron kinda “fangirl”. This small print is also for the single/available legal loving kinda ladies. Hi girls!! Hit a brother up!)

There might be some women out there who find Zito attractive, still. He managed to get Hillary Duff recently, and she’s a pretty girl. My ex errenously assumed I find Zito attractive, but hey, nobody’s perfect.

Personally I like me some Jonathan Sanchez and Noah Lowry because I like the tall guys with the dark features. Cain is funny looking, but I love him just the same (Matt, if you’re reading this, I mean you no harm. Like you’d date me anyway, but still. Are we cool?) Tim, I love Tim. In ways I cannot even describe. But Zito? Once he was the object of many female desires, even my own in 2002…anyway, no I can’t say I know anyone who still likes Zito. I can point to a superficial reason why he may have turned off many female admirers: that horrible child molester beard he’s sporting. WTF is that about? Bad facial hair can ruin things very quickly (see: Brian Wilson’s face merkin)

Conversely I know a lot of gals find Kevin Frandsen zomg so hot but he’s just not for me. I recognize that he’s a good looking dude, but meh. I usually don’t go for the blond thing. Ortmeier looks too much like an ex of mine who just stopped talking to me for no good reason so I can’t even look at him. I have a dumb silly crush on Fred Lewis because he’s just so adorable plus he hits good.

Fangirl is a bad word, IMO. The term suggests a willingly stupid gal who doesn’t even try to follow the game but goes for zomg the hotties. Usually seen wearing pink crap that was not sold to benefit cancer fighting causes, and various other ugly pastel team apparel. That’s the only thing I’ll get on your case about, and not even in the mean way I reserve for jerkwads. :)

I disagree fairly strongly

with viewpoints like that.

I disagree with the idea that anyone gets to determine the “correctness” / validity of someone else’s sports fandom. That viewpoint reminds of some “old school” writers deriding “statheads” for “not watching the game while crunching stats in their mother’s basements”. It reminds me of some stat based fans who sneer at fans who might like a player who is not necessarily great, or even good. It reminds me of some fans who sneer at other fans who watch sports for the players, instead of just the laundry, and who sneer at fans who support a player who is not wearing the correct laundry.

Some other things in the article that I disagree with:

A mildly offensive fangirl is one who exhibits knowledge of her team of choice, at least enough to name the members of her starting rotation, but can’t provide fact one about a team or player outside her city. The idea that twenty-nine other teams exist in the league is lost on her. Everyone knows the sun rises and sets behind the Green Monster. Duh.

I don’t see why she singles out fangirls for this. Quite a few fans, male fans, only pay attention to their favourite team and their rivals. This behaviour seems more prevalent among fans of East Coast big market teams. Not fangirls. Hell, there are still many knowledgeable fans out there who still view the A’s through the prism of Moneyball, and who have not moved beyond Hudson, Mulder and Zito.

The growing appeal of these items can be summarized by a simple assessment of, "it’s cute." Cute. There’s no cute in baseball

Once upon a time, there was also no “DH” in baseball. Things change. If enough fans want “cute” in baseball, there will be “cute” in baseball.

We’ve discussed this whole “fangirl” thing before, and I hope you realize that I’m not trying to throw you or any of the other ladies into that class. I was simply trying to draw a comparison between your kinda fandom and the zmog the hotties type.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that it’s frustrating that there’s not more ladies out there who share my fascination with how Timmy throws his 2-seamer…as they’d rather fawn over a firm ass in a tight set of pants. I can’t blame them really, because dudes do it too, but at least we’re honest about it.

Another quick comparison. I’ve gotten this friend of mine into soccer lately. We’ve been to a few games together, watch a few more on the tele and also spend some time in the pub as well. The problem is that she’s became the soccer fangirl and refuses to look at it for the beauty of the game. Who can blame her when rich hotty Europeans are prancing around with their fancy hair…but still…it kinda sucks that it’s came to that.

Tim won me over with his alien cyborg pitching powers. He’s still a skinny, awkward, goofy looking fellow, but his repetoire and badass attitude on the mound is very, very attractive.

One of my favorite players in the game in Prince Fielder. I love him because he’s a great hitter. Was I also into Scott Podsednik when he was with Milwaukee? Sure. It’s hard to resist a good looking guy in tight pants. But Prince always always always has my heart because he’s a monster hitter. And now Podsednik is nothing so I laugh at him.

It’s frustrating to BE that gal who says “hay look Tim’s throwing the slider more isn’t that cool?” while your male peers look at you like ”....” More than a few times I’ve tried to enter discussions with men at my workplace about sports and I just get blank stares. And as you know, PBP, I’m no dummy when it comes to the subject. My guess is it’s just daunting to women to get involved in these discussions with the core fanbase of the sport because they act like we’re speaking Greek to them when we do jump in. Regardless of our abilities to discuss the subjects well. Nope. It’s just “weird.”

And yeah, if Jennie Finch was around here pitching I’m sure most of the dudes wouldn’t be breaking down her pitches and analyzing her stats. They’d just be pleased with the blond girl with the big bazooms. Which is fine. I’m not gonna begrudge anyone for that.

The dynamic just doesn’t need to be as messed up as it is.

Why can't a fangirl / boy

appreciate both? Both the beauty of the movement, and the beauty of the body that produces the movement?

Also, there are also fans who only appreciate players / teams who are “awesome”, ie players who produce great numbers, teams that win; who don’t appreciate the aesthetics of sporting movement. Why is being a fan of team that wins while playing dull “like watching s#!+ hanging of a stick” soccer acceptable, nay, even considered something to be proud of, why is supporting laundry considered the ideal, with wins all that matters, considered the ideal, but appreciating the beauty of the athletes considered a sin?

Why is appreciating the beauty of the athletes considered a sin?

It shouldn’t be, you’re absolutely right. Isn’t watching the grace of a fit, athletic person excelling in his or her chosen sport a lovely thing to see? Of course it is. But when I get asinine comments about how I only love sports because I like to look at the guys, all your excellent reasoning goes out the window.

Not bad

The only thing I found weird was his preoccupation with how our guys pitched against the NL Central this year. First of all, let’s take an already small sample size (pitchers’ to date stats) and shrink it arbitrarily (since the NL Central does not reflect the Astros). Second of all, ummm… I actually incorporated my second of all into my first of all, so… I can play through Cherub Rock on hard with the guitar without needing to be saved now. That’s cool, because that song is freaking hard.

Wrong!

Math is easy. English is hard.

I know a lot of people who struggle with one or the other. The math peeps can’t write an essay, and the English peeps can’t add or subtract. I’m serious when I say I can do the complex algebra stuff like quadratic equations and rationalizing fractions, but actually getting the number answer? I always mess up the arithmetic. Even with a calculator. I don’t get why.

English however bores me because it’s like snore another essay? All right, here’s a thesis statement and here’s my evidence can I go now?

I’m feelin’ ya on this one. I struggled for a long while with the math classes I took in college. Until I realized that it isn’t about the answers so much as the process. The only way I got through those engineering and calculus classes was to dumb it down a bit and just try and emulate the process behind the whole thing. Plug this number into here, put that number over there, toss a shot back and pray like hell that you’re getting it right!

Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.

Yea.

I’m the one who was in Calc in high school, sailed through another year of Calculus in college, but had to re-take English 1a to pass and only passed English 1b by getting in a good group in a group work class.

Wow, I love the internet. Here is a post about a baseball series that started yesterday and in almost 70 posts we can talk about boobies, butts, tight pants, algebra, english, rock songs and probably a few more topics I missed or forgot about.
