minor lines, 5/11/08
AAA: Fresno defeated Oklahoma 13-6
Fresno: CF Clay Timpner: 4 for 6, 3B, 2 2B
Fresno: DH Scott McClain: 2 for 4, 2B, 2 BB, SO
Fresno: 2B Travis Denker: 3 for 5, 2B
Fresno: 1B Brett Harper: 3 for 5
Oklahoma: LF Marlon Byrd: 3 for 4, 2B, BB
Fresno: RHP Brad Hennessey: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Fresno: LHP Erick Threets: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Every Grizzly starter contributed at least one hit to their 20-hit attack. Timpner entered the day with just 8 XBH but had three more to boost his SLG above .400. McClain, who drew two of the Grizzlies' four walks, was the other Grizzly to reach base four times. Denker and Harper had three hits each, raising their respective AVGs to .286 and .303. The Rangers' Byrd bounced back from his sombrero yesterday with three hits in his second rehab game, and he also had an outfield assist.
Hennessey pitched well in his first minor league appearance in a couple years. He allowed just one XBH, but he also had a 1/10 GO/FO line on an afternoon during which officially the wind was blowing out at 10 mph to right field. Threets struggled in his fourth rehab appearance. Over those four appearances, he now has 2 H, 3 BB, 4 ER and 3 K in 4.1 IP. He threw less than half his pitches (17 of 36) for strikes.
AA: Connecticut lost to Binghamton 2-1
Connecticut: CF Antoan Richardson: 1 for 2, 2 BB, 3 SB
Connecticut: RHP Adam Cowart: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Nate Bump: 1.0 IP, 1 K--1 HB
Richardson was the only Defender to reach base multiple times. He is hitting better than .300 over his last ten games, but his season-long AVG remains below .200. He now has 13 SB.
Cowart pitched well enough, but suffered the loss to even his W-L record at 2-2. He induced fewer ground balls than normal with a 9/7 GO/FO line. Even with the two walks today, his K/BB ratio remains above 3.50. The 31-year-old Bump, whom the Giants traded nearly a decade ago as part of the package to acquire Livan Hernandez, made his 2008 season debut.
A+: San Jose lost to Visalia 4-2
(allowing three runs over the final two innings)
San Jose: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 3 for 4, E
San Jose: DH Andy D'Alessio: 3 for 4, HR, SO
San Jose: RHP Kevin Pucetas: 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Visalia: RHP Wes Roemer: 7.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Rohlinger and D'Alessio each had three of the Giants' nine hits, raising their respective AVGs to .287 and .314. D'Alessio led off the 7th inning with his 4th HR and first of the month. Rohlinger has had multiple hits in seven of his last eleven games. He was charged for an error, his sixth error of the young season, for interference in the 9th inning, a played following which manager Steve Decker was ejected.
Pucetas pitched very effectively once again, bringing his ERA slightly lower to 1.72. Unfortunately, the bullpen was less effective. Roemer, a supplemental first round pick by the Diamondbacks a year ago, had a good start, bouncing back from the 12 ER he had allowed over his previous two starts.

Nate Bump
Lets see now that we got Bump back…
We sent Jason Grilli and Nate Bump out for L. Hernandez.
We sent sent Hernandez along with Edwards Guzman for RHP Jim Brower (who we released).
So the way this (insane) logic works it was Grilli and Guzman for nothing (other than fine memories, heartache, and service time[remember he was “an innings eater”])

We got a lot more value out of Jim Brower than anyone got out of Edwards Guzman.

Great to see Henny doing well at Fresno
Rohlinger continues to rake and Pucetas pitched well again.

WTF with Henny? He’s been so horrid I thought he would keep stinking it up in Fresno. Maybe he’ll be back… but this is the last option so ‘twill be interesting to see if he can stick.
and 3 SB for Richardson? I now have a favorite ballplayer in Norwich…

Augusta day off
on a Sunday? isn’t that kinda odd? Or is it more common in the minors?

Even a friend who knows jack about the minors asked me about that, saying it was weird that any baseball team would have a Sunday off.

Yeah, it struck me as unusual too. One of those I made an extra step to make sure it was an actual off-day. I think I have noticed that the Sally League is more prone to take off-days on days like Mother’s Day and Easter.

Hennessey can stay down there forever as far as I’m concerned, unless they put him into Zito’s spot in the rotation. Then I can live with it. Threatts’ bad outing might have sealed his fate. He wasn’t impressive before the injury and there is really nobody on the staff who should be dumped when Threatts’ rehab time is up. And if they decide they want another lefty in the bullpen, Alex Hinshaw is far more deserving than Erick is. I think they put Threatts on waivers.

Denker
Travis could not hit his way out of a paper bag in AA and is nearing .300 in AAA. I realize it is small sample size, but what kind of comment does that make regarding Dodd stadium? Maybe he is just a slow starter, but it is nice to see someone with some “prospect” status playing in Fresno beside Nate.

I guess it's a small sample size
Prior to yesterday’s game he was hitting .217 at Fresno.
My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

great news on Hennessey
That start isn’t worth doing cartwheels over in regard to him making it back to contribute to the MLB club (although it is a nice first step in that regard). But given Sabean’s very ominous comments last week about wondering if there was something physically wrong with Hennessey, seeing him throw 58 pitches and be effective is a very good sign.
