So, does anyone still want to stick up for Castle?
I was at the game today. Not only did he hit into 3 DP's, but two of them were with the freaking bases loaded and nobody out. He also booted a ball which was scored a base hit but IMO should have been an error.
Jose "Rally Obliterator" Castillo.
The worst part about it is he is slapping at shit pitches with bases loaded and nobody out. He does not know the meaning of situational hitting. All he does is free swing slap at whatever the pitcher throws and see what happens. He doesn't even try to elevate his swing and put the ball in the air, just squirts a line drive or a ground ball somewhere and crosses his fingers.
Then he hits a garbage time triple. Sorry Jose, too little too late.
Maybe he has a lot of natural talent, but talent alone does not a big league player make. I see no evidence from the guy that he is capable of making a strategic at bat, and that drives me absolutley insane. This guy has been in the ML for what, 4 years? I think it's time we give whoever is in line @ Fresno a try.
On the plus side, I met smokin 12 year old in the bleachers today. Random.
And yeah, Bochy can't manage his pitchers. Sanchez pitched 1 batter too many. The only team that deserved to win less today than the Giants was the Phillies, lucky break.
Bases loaded w/ 0 out TWO times = 1 run scored? I hate you Jose Castillo.

This is not a very fair criticism. He didn’t roll over an an outside slider and hit it weakly to the left side. Each time he smoked the ball, just right at someone. He particularly smoked the line drive, where he was going with the pitch and scalded it to the right side. Really, Bowker should be criticized for running before establishing that the ball got past the 1b man. That ball could very easily have been a bases clearing 2b.
by allfrank on May 11, 2008 6:21 PM PDT 0 recs
Not a fair criticism?
There is a reason that Castillo leads the league in GIDP. I will give you that the liner was just terrible luck – but that is really besides the point.
The guy does not know how to hit situationally. He has a penchant for hitting groundballs. He should know that, and in a situation where the DP is a possibility, he needs to be much more selective with his pitches and try to elevate the ball.
But he just slaps at the ball and crosses his fingers.

going by that theory
any time someone batting 6th on the Giants hits a triple with no one out (or batting 7th with one out, or 8th with 2 out) it’s “garbage time” and shouldn’t count.

What you missed re: this triple
is that Flannery was giving him the “your up” sign but Joe Castle slid anyway. Had he paid attention he would have scored on the bad throw because he was WAY safe. That is where the criticism should be directed.
I was there too, and both of the GIDP balls were unfortunate, but Utley had him shaded toward the middle. The second GIDP looked like runs off of the bat to me, ( I was in 143 and that ball was hit right at me) but Utley got a good jump on it. The line drive DP was just bad luck, and bad base-running.
Also, a third baseman is supposed to get to any ball he can which Joe did. Unfortunately the ball was not hit hard enough to get passed him. That ball was far enough over that Visquel would have had it had Joe not knocked it down. Omar actually had to cut back to his left to react to the ball after Joe missed it. So I’m not sure this is fair either.

shit happens
it was bad luck.
“Clutch” ability is largely a myth, the simple fact is Castillo is at the very best a below average hitter on a bad hitting team. Again, “He is who we thought he was!” A slightly better option at 3b than Leone. Just be happy we’re not paying him a lot.
by Viliphied on May 11, 2008 6:39 PM PDT 0 recs
It's not "clutch"
It’s situational hitting, which is not a myth. I’m not saying he is unclutch, I am saying he sucks.
He has no ability to do anything other than slap at the ball. That is why he hits into so many double plays.
Good players recognize a DP situation, and make an effort to not hit a double play ball. That may end up compromising their at bat slightly, but the reduced effectiveness at the plate is compensated for by the ability to have two batters up in the situation.
There is a reason some guys seem to GIDP a lot, and others never do. It’s not luck or overall talent level – it is discipline and control.
Castillo has none of these things.

To not make the team worse.
If the guy could just pull a Bocock up there and not come through w/ RISP – that would be one thing. That I would expect and be ok with.
But the guy actively hurts the team by his penchant for GIDP in critical situations. I’m already down on the guy, but today was terrible.
Three double plays. Three – In one game. Two with the bases loaded and no one out. The Giants had two seperate innings where they loaded the bases and had no one out. Each time, Castillo hit into a DP. The Phillies then IBB’ed Omar in the 8 hole and pitched to Sanchez. Castillo singlehandedly destroyed both rallies. I expect a waiver wire pickup to not especially help the team – I don’t expect him to drag the team down.
That is not just a guy who is struggling or just isn’t that good – that is a guy who has no regard for HOW to bat in that circumstance, and as a result makes the team worse than replacement level. Worse than minor league call up.

You say he just “squirts a line drive or a ground ball somewhere.” Well, there’s nothing wrong with squirting line drives. I don’t think the 3 dp game today was really a reason to criticize him, especially on the liner to first. Not that I think he’s a good player – I don’t – but this is a little bit unfair.

Except he is predictable now.
He obviously presses w/ RISP and as a result can’t hit for crap.
What makes the liner DP bad is that it was a first pitch swing, after the previous batter had just drawn a walk and the pitcher wasn’t throwing strikes. Yeah, it was an unlucky break, but why on earth would you come up in that situation and just slap at the first pitch?
Especially after he had GIDP in that exact same situation his last time through, and should have felt especially like an idiot.
He shows no regard for that sort of thing, and that is what drives me nuts.

you said above that no-one past him is crap. a triple was “garbage time” because you knew no one behind him could get him in from third. but he also shouldn’t swing at 1st pitch “get it in” strikes and smoke them the other way (going with the pitch).
this 3 DP game is going to inflate his DP totals for the rest of the year, screwing his RC and RC-27 so they are even more out of whack with his OPS. today he hit the ball okay. just unlucky. from contact he could have been four for four… but the baseball odds gods had to even his pace out after yesterday.

He wasn’t ‘slapping’ at the ball, he hit each one very hard. Them’s the breaks. Why get so worked up over 1 game. Yesterday he was 4 for 4, and came up 3 times with Rowand on base. He is not oblivious to ‘situational’ hitting. Actually, unlike Feliz, when they work him away, he goes to the opposite field. You have to give the pitchers some credit, they are throwing pitches that are very difficult to elevate. Your ‘strategy’ would only lead to harmless popups. He’s actually swinging the bat pretty well right now.

Funny thing about the Feliz comment
I know exactly what you are talking about. One of Feliz’s most maddening habits was always, always, pulling outside pitches for easy groundouts to the shortstop.
Of course, today Feliz goes the other way with an outside pitch making this comment seem silly on its face.

Feliz has definitely benefited from a different hitting instructor. He’s a lot more patient at the plate and can now actually hit a ball to opposite field. I’m not saying he’s a whole lot better than he was but he’s definitely not smacking at as many fastballs down and away.

I whole-heartedly support Castle
He’s 17th among MLB 3B’s with a .740 OPS and he’s 13th on defense with a .778 zone rating. He’s cheap. Not re-signing Feliz earned us a high draft pick, saved us money for the next 3 years and netted us a player in Castillo who is actually similar to Feliz offensively though worse defensively. Not trading for Crede allowed us to keep Sanchez and other prospects. The other options available were Lamb (worse), Ensberg (worse), McPherson (worse) or Alex Rodriguez (too expensive). Of all the Giants problems having a league-average offensive and defensive 3B for 1 year at less than 0.6 million who is only a slight downgrade from Feliz seems to be the least of our worries. Also, I’d rather have 27 year-old Castillo out there than old-expensive Rich Aurilia or 36 year-old never-will-be Scott McClain. I’d also rather have Castillo than Feliz because we need all the draft picks we can get to try to rebuild our farm system and because we need to stop paying millions of dollars for marginal upgrades (Roberts, Aurilia, Winn, Durham, etc.)

League average EQA for 3b
in 2008 is 269. League average in 2007 was also 269. The league average of all positions is 260. Jose Castillo’s EQA in 2008 is 252. He’s not league average offensively. AT ALL. Not even at 2b. League average for 2b is 254.
As for his D, RZR has him at a very pathetic 556, 2nd last in MLB among qualified candidates.. One play by play metric has him about average, the other has him as atrocious.
Also, why are you so sure that Castillo is a better option than McPherson?

Jose Castillo
I affectionately call him “RallyKiller” in hopes he will hit another HR. Today, and Kruk backs me up on this, he hit in tough luck. All 4 plate appearances he hit the ball on the screws but normally was at someone. Very easily could have went 3 fer 4 or 4 fer 4 with a lot of ribbies. Tomorrow he will get a bloop and a dink and go 2 fer 4.
Also believe SF is playing him out of position. Is there a better 2b on this team than Castillo?
by wilriv21 on May 11, 2008 8:16 PM PDT 0 recs
Obviously it takes a little tough luck to be as horrible as he was today
But today for me was really the straw. He’s been pretty bad all season, and frankly – he is playing over his head right now. his OPS is 50 points over his career average of 682 and 120 points over his last year’s total of 605. I can’t wait until he regresses to the mean…

It's not that he doesn't hit the ball hard.
It’s that he doesn’t know how to control his bat and hit appropriately for the situation.
With a runner on 1st and less than two outs, you need to hit the ball into the outfield. If there is RISP, you need to hit the ball in the air.
He is apparently completely unable to do that. I would much rather see him strike out trying to elevate a pitch than do what he is doing.
I know he is cheap, I know we don’t got anyone else – but god damn he is horrible.
And it’s not just this game. Yes – everyone has bad games, but he is having a bad season.

We knew what we were getting with Castillo
and it’s crap. A .229/.288/.385 April didn’t change my mind about him. I’d rather see Aurilia or Velez over there. Every at-bat that Aurilia has had at 1B is one that should have gone to Ortmeier. Every at-bat that Castillo has had at 3B should have gone to Aurilia. That Castillo leads the team in ABs, and hits ahead of Ortmeier whenever both are in the lineup, boils my bun-buns.
He’s hot right now. Maybe he stays on a tear and someone decides to give us a prospect? These are the coat racks on which I hang my dreams.

I don’t get all of the Castillo apologists. “Oh he got unlucky, he hit the ball hard”
Okay, take today out of the equation – he still sucks. Hard.
And not sucks in the “low talent may not make it into the MLB but is really trying” way, but in the ” does not have the presence of mind to pull his head out of his ass and approach a situation objectively” way. That is much harder to take.
These are the same people who slam Velez for batting .220 w/ a .260 OBP, but find all sorts of reasons why Castillo’s .229/290 is okay because he is just a stopgap, and cheap.
Velez is just a stopgap and cheap also – but at least he doesn’t lead the NL in GIDP. At least he has some Upside, whereas Castillo appears to have none. At least I see Velez doing things every game to try to improve on his performance unlike Castillo who has been in and out of ML for 4 years, and is apparently set in his slap-happy free-swinging ways.
Yeah, he is all we have got at 3b right now (well, not really) and yeah, he is cheap – but that doesn’t mean I can’t be extremely dissatisfied with his performance and identify it as the most lacking position on the team.

I gather from your posts throughout this thread that
1. you’d like for Castillo to hit the ball hard less. Because hitting the ball hard is bad.
2. you’d like Castillo to hit like Bocock.
3. you think that a waiver wire pickup that is around league average is a “bad season.”
You do spin these rather nonsense assertions into pretty good arguments about situational hitting and nice sounding rants. You are to be commended for that work. But look at these things you’d rather Castillo do….
I think you might be a little upset. You’re anger is clouding your fanpostings. I’d recommend thinking of puppies or cold beer or something rather than Castillo. When he is up, just think about things that make you happy – I like recalling the feeling of a Barry Bonds at bat, or a Santiago spin-swivel-swing homer over the left-field walls – or something else that would make you angry – like a rally monkey or dirty dodger. Either tactic might make you think less about Castillo, which can only be good for your blood pressure, and Giants-watching enjoyment. So when Castillo is next up to bat, just think about your fantasy team, The Thrill, stick your fingers in your ears and go “LALALALALALAALALA”, anything, but allow yourself to be disappointed by something Castillo does. Because you are focusing on the bad( DP), and ignoring the good (2Bs, cheapness, lack of suck relative to other giants, 4-4). Then in June or July or at the end of the season, check back in for a Castillo up date. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Castillo’s “bad season.” Or he’ll be gone. Either way, you can have a happier summer.
(i have slept in the past 35 hours, but i doubt this post made any sense.)

This comment I understand. I did something similar after the Bob Brenly freak show of fielding 3rd.
And he redeemed himself but winning that game with his bat.
Still once you get the poison out you are going to realize Castle is crap but with out paying luxury item prices. We could be playing Mora ( hitting 720 OPS getting 7.8 mil this year & 9 mil next) over there or even Huff ( hitting 790 Ops 8 mil this year & next) or Millar ( hitting 676 OPS getting paid 2.25 Mil this year then is free agent) could be taking his roster slot. And don’t even try to tell me these three don’t have enough savvy veteran "goodness" to make Sabean’s knees go weak.
So in summary Castle is bad. but is a thunder could of bad. Not a hurricane of bad. His down pour of crap will pass with only minimum damage left behind.

To more directly answer your questions
1.) I would like Castillo to show some ability to hit appropriate for the situation. Bases loaded w/ 0 out is not a situation where hitting a ground ball is ok. Especially not hard. If there is 2 outs, then sure – hit it hard wherever/however you can.
But by hitting a groundball, you take the bat out of your hand as well as whoever is behind you, and get a runner off base.
2.) I would like Castillo to demonstrate some sort of patience at the plate. Bases loaded with 0 out is no place to swing at the first pitch, ever. I don’t care if you are Brian Bocock or Barry freakin Bonds.
3.) I think a waiver wire pickup who is playing every single day out of necessity (not merit) is a disaster in of itself. I think that waiver wire pickup has shown a propensity for failing big time in high leverage situations while keeping his stats above the Mendoza line in garbage time (3r HR vs Pittsburgh)
I think he is trash, and I think that is why he was DFA’ed twice already. He is not going to be part of the next Giants team, and as a result I think he is a waste of Ab’s. I can’t believe I am saying this, but I would rather watch Aurilia @ 3b…

I mean I’ve came to the conclusion that all of the blame this year resides on our GM and his merry band of jackasses. It’s not Castillo’s fault that he sucks a donkey tit and has zero plate discipline. It’s the shithead in the front office who pinned all of our hopes for the 2008 1B/3B situation on Frandsen, Auerilia, and Ort….Read that part again….Jesus! He’s a fucking idiot, that Sabean.

being pissy with sabean gets old after awhile. every once and awhile we need to turn to the crappy players that have no business starting on a major league team. it’s castillo’s turn.

Look at the bigger picture here...
I’d agree with you if we had just a few players in that boat. That’s never the case though….Instead we’ve been stuck with a never-ending string of washed up Dave Roberts, Jose Vizcaino, Matt Morris, etc, etc, etc. There’s only one common thread with all these losers….they were brought in and placed in a prominent position by one Mr. Brian Sabean!

He was a waiver wire pickup.
How many times does that have to be said until you understand that we never ever expected him to be that good anyway?
Yes, I know 3 DPs in one game sucks—but no one expected him to do any better anyway. Why so much hate for a guy sucking as we expected him to?

Man
Baseball is the only aspect of my life where 3 DPs is a bad thing.

In that vein
I’ve been thinking that Jonathan Sanchez’s walk up music, at least until he becomes expensive, should be “Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap”

If you like things that are funny, perhaps you will enjoy ChatterBalks Dot Com?

I think we all know the answer to that.
But in case you didn’t, the answer is “only if the other dude is somehow also me.”
