minor lines, 5/10/08

AAA: Fresno defeated Oklahoma 3-1

Fresno: SS Ivan Ochoa: 0 for 2, 2 BB, HBP, 2 SB
Fresno: RF Nate Schierholtz: 1 for 3, 3B, BB, IBB
Fresno: DH Brett Harper: 2 for 3, 2B
Oklahoma: CF Marlon Byrd: 0 for 4, 4 SO

Fresno: RHP Matt Palmer: 5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K
Fresno: LHP Alex Hinshaw: 2.0 IP, 3 K
Oklahoma: RHP Robinson Tejada: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K

Harper was the only player in the game with multiple hits, raising his AVG to .287.  Schierholtz had a strong game with his 5th triple and an outfield assist.  The triple was his third in his last five games and the walk, albeit an intentional walk, was his sixth in his last ten games.  Ochoa reached base three times to improve his OBP to .347.  The Rangers' Byrd had the sombrero in his first rehab game.

Palmer's best two starts of the season have been his last two starts.  Combined he has 8 H, 3 BB, 0 ER and 18 K in 13.1 IP over those two starts.  However, he was not very efficient with his pitch count in this start with 91 pitches (55 strikes) in 5.1 IP.  Hinshaw had a two-inning appearance for just the second time this year.  He further improved his outstanding peripheral stats to 5 H, 4 BB and 21 K in 15.2 IP.  Tejada, who made nineteen starts in the majors last year, improved his ERA to 2.70 in eight appearances.

AA: Connecticut defeated Binghamton 1-0

Connecticut: CF-RF Ben Copeland: 1 for 3, 3B, 2 SO
Binghamton: CF Fernando Martinez: 3 for 4

Connecticut: RHP Joe Martinez: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Steve Palazzolo: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 4 K--1 WP
Connecticut: RHP Osiris Matos: 1.0 IP, 1 K
Binghamton: LHP Jon Niese: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Copeland led off the bottom of the 1st inning with his 5th triple and then scored on a groundout.  The Defenders managed just two baserunners the rest of the game, both of whom were erased on subsequent GiDPs.  But the one run was enough for the win, and the Defenders had no runners LOB.  Martinez, the Mets' top prospect and the youngest player in the upper minors, had three of his team's six hits.  With eight hits in his last three games, he has raised his AVG to .277.

Martinez had one of his best starts of the year.  Among his seven starts, it was the third time he has gone 6.0 IP without allowing an earned run.  He improved his ERA to 2.29 and W-L record to 2-3.  Palazzolo and Matos finished the shutout, which helped Matos to earn his 3rd save.  Niese was coming off his worst two starts of the year but has otherwise emerged as perhaps the Mets' top pitching prospect.  He has a 2-4 W-L record despite allowing more than one earned run only twice.

A+: San Jose lost to Visalia 6-1

San Jose: LF Bobby Felmy: 2 for 4, 2B
San Jose: SS Juan Ciriaco: 1 for 3, BB, E

San Jose: LHP Clayton Tanner: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 0 K--1 PO
Visalia: RHP Barry Enright: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Felmy was the only Giant with two hits, raising his AVG to .307.  Ciriaco, whom the Giants acquired in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft, drew the Giants only walk and was their only other hitter to reach base twice.

Tanner continues to scuffle, having now allowed 21 ER over his last five starts.  His K/BB ratio slipped from 2.10 to 1.50.  Enright, the Diamondbacks' second round pick a year ago, had his best start of the year, setting a new season high with 6 IP and setting a new season low tih 1 ER.  He alo tied a season low with 5 H and 0 BB and tied a season high with 6 K.  His ERA remains above 7.00, however.

A-: Augusta lost to Columbus 9-1

Augusta: 2B Brock Bond: 1 for 3, BB
Augusta: LF Garrett Baker: 0 for 4, 3 SO

Augusta: LHP Steven Calicutt: 2.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K--1 HB

Bond was the only GreenJacket to reach base twice.  He has a hit in each of his last ten games, but his .333 AVG over that time has lowered his season AVG to .376.  Baker, who had been swinging a hot bat with four consecutive multi-hit games, had his second straight 0-for-4 line, this time including the hat trick.  He now has 26 H and 31 SO among 115 AB (.226 AVG).

Calicutt had his worst start of the year.  It was his shortest start and his first appearance without a strikeout.  His ERA remains below 4.00.

I’m really pleased with Joey Joe Joe doing well at the higher level. I want this to be his breakthrough year.

Yeah, sure, two walks is good (even if one of them was intentional)

But no stolen bases? I’ve come to expect them from him.

I was at the SJ game last night. Tanner looked really bad. Just couldn’t locate to save his life, and got hit all over the place. Something just isn’t right with him. This was his fifth start in a row where he allowed a bunch of runs without going long at all, innings-wise.

Pablito on the other hand, still looking great. He was back at catcher last night and the brother can move. He hit a triple in the game. He hit the ball off the base of the wall in left center and just kept on going. I love him.

Wilmin Rodriguez pitched two innings and struck out two batters. Was a nice change of pace from the Tanner bloodletting. I like Rodriguez’s motion; it’s sort of sidearmy funky.

Hopefully the “Pablo & Andy D. Show” makes it’s way north to make us laugh at the humiliated pitchers of the National League and the assorted mess from the AL.

And speaking of a “assorted mess”, things are getting real funny down here in Padreville. Callers are back-bitting other “hopeful” callers like they’re living on Pluto, the propagandists who were talking down the Giants like they were the worst and most inept team ever are suddenly saying that the Padres are by far the worst run team in the NL West and citing drafts and non-moves as examples of it and the season isn’t about match-up’s and key games anymore, rather…it’s about the “give away” nights and getting butts in the stands. And these a-holes are still playing footsies with calling up Headley and Antonelli. The S.D. Titanic has hit the Iceberg and the Iceberg’s name is John Moores’ closed wallet policy.

it's always noonan somewhere

Why aren't Antonelli and Headley up?

Is that just some kind of money-saving gambit?

Hinshaw

5 hits and 4 walks in 15.2 innings? I knew he was doing good but, geez, that’s insanely good. Of course it is only 15.2 innings, but still. When’s he going to be up on the big league club?

No hurry, really

Just trying to see when he was going to come up, in anybody’s opinion.

The thing about the success of Sadler and Hinshaw (along with the success of the major league bullpen) is that the Giants have something surprising in an area of the team. Depth. They have a freakin’ deep bullpen. Imagine if Hennessey somehow turns things around. Even more depth. And then, Romo probably isn’t that far behind….

Maybe some bullpen guys will bring us back something quite useful this trading season. And we could probably still field a very good bullpen after having dispatched a couple arms.

surprising stat of the day

Sadler: 9 pitches all strikes

by slojoe on May 11, 2008 10:56 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Hinshaw’s past wildness does have me a little worried. Assuming there’s room, I’d say his schedule for a big league debut is late this year, possibly September.

There will be a lot of competition in the bullpen department, however.

all the more reason he should be in the “trade bait” mix. and Wilson, and Sadler, and Taschner, and Walker, and so on. That’s the lot of a relief pitchers, periodic wildness. That and sometimes a injury history. Someone smart mentioned somewhere that “closers” aren’t needed on a rebuilding team. This good relief corps is helping the Giants to win one run games now, and that is nice, but i hear the Giants could use some positional prospects.

I’d hold onto Valdez more than some other despite his injury history. TJ is something that a pitcher seems to be able to come back on, and even build upon. Thighler and Nathan spring to mind.

And speaking of Nathan, even though I opposed the Nathan trade from the beginning, if the Giants got a similar offer today seems like they should take it. (The difference for me is that Nathan was my favorite Giants pitcher at the time and I wouldn’t have traded him for almost anything, a spot now claimed by the Enchanter. I play favorites.)

I'd keep Wilson...

...but by all means, if Hinshaw has value to teams, do it.

hinshaw, as a lefty rp should stay

threets is a bust…i love the guy, but he is never gonna get a handle on his wildness…right now, the only lefty we have in the pen is tasch…and in reality, we should have two

if anyone else can be used in a package at the break…and we end up on the winning end…so be it

but no more trading 3 arms for a one year rental

Where's Wayne Krivsky when we need him?

Surely such a bounty of relievers would return us Jay Bruce or Joey Votto!

Matt Palmer

last year at Fresno: 155 IP – 98 K

this year: 43 IP – 52 K

whats going on there? hes already 29 y.o.

by slojoe on May 11, 2008 10:55 PM PDT   0 recs

Good question. That’s a pretty dramatic improvement.

He’s still a groundball maven, and I still think he’s a viable fifth starter, but he’s probably doomed to be a AAA lifer at this point.

by Evan on May 12, 2008 8:33 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

wonder if he's changing pitching style or something

if thats possible?

i thought he might have been disappointed to not make the big club out of ST, got rocked in his first few
starts down in Fresno this year….maybe he decided he needed to do things differently if he is going to make it…...

had some decent K/9 as a closer earlier in the low minors….

Where's Brian Anderson?

All this talk of the bullpen, and I’m left wondering what happened to Brian Anderson. I remember he was hurt at the beginning of the season… but i thought it was minor. I tried Googling him, to no avail. Little help?
