Also, sounds like Winn hit his homer right about where I was sitting last time I was at the ballpark. 28 years of going to the ballpark and I’ve never even come close to getting a ball. Bastards.

rowand..

..isn’t actually this good a hitter, but unlike most of this lineup he can probably produce at league average. That’s not worth the salary the Giants paid him, but he’s only a little overpriced. Not like the Bad Barry.

by wcw on May 10, 2008 2:35 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he’s not this good a hitter, but he has been quite comfortably above-average the two years he’s been more or less healthy the whole year.

Tough call

In two of the last four years, he was this good a hitter; the problem is that in the other two years, he was Randy Winn.

Rowand would be a great guy to have on a team with a good lineup. He’s a very good cog, but a lousy star.

by jcb9 on May 10, 2008 2:37 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he's a star?

Nah, to the Giants credit they’re paying him like a great cog, when he’s a very good cog. A star would be getting A-Rod money. As for his hitting, his career OPS+ is 107, so let’s give him ‘slightly above-average.’ ‘Comfortably above-average’ has to be more than 7% above the league. 20%? A-Rod’s career OPS+ is 147.

by wcw on May 10, 2008 2:40 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe they’re paying him like a cog, but my he’s the best and highest paid player in our lineup. Which is not good.

by jcb9 on May 10, 2008 2:41 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

'great cog'

$12m-ish. You know—what the Royals are paying whatsisface.

by wcw on May 10, 2008 2:42 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, but he has been comfortably above average in the years he’s been healthy. He wasn’t healthy in 2005/6, both of which dragged down his career OPS+. Obviously they count and you can’t ignore them, but you do have to admit that in 2004, 2007 and so far this year, he’s been “comfortably” above average.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

by jponry on May 10, 2008 2:41 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If you like things that are funny, perhaps you will enjoy ChatterBalks Dot Com?

by groug on May 10, 2008 3:07 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no, no, no

It’s not “the rules”, it’s MLB’s decision to sign a contract with Fox. Fox wanted it, MLB decided to sign on the dotted line in return for whatever compensation they get.

This isn’t faceless. It’s Selig and Newscorp.

by wcw on May 10, 2008 3:08 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I phrased my response badly. I was just saying that the problem isn’t FOX not catering to the teams I like. The problem is that I can only watch whoever they say I can and nobody can broadcast games during their window, which is ridiculous and insane.
