minor lines, 5/9/08

AAA: Fresno lost to New Orleans 3-1

Fresno: 2B Justin Leone: 1 for 3, BB
Fresno: 3B Nate Schierholtz: 1 for 4, 3B, SO
New Orleans: 3B Fernando Tatis: 1 for 2, HR, BB

Fresno: RHP Nick Pereira: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K--1 HR
Fresno: RHP Randy Messenger: 1.0 IP, 1 H

Leone drew the Grizzlies' only walk and was their only hitter to reach base twice.  He has cooled off in May, but his OBP and SLG remain above .350 and .500, respectively.  Schierholtz's 4th triple of the year drove in the team's only run and was their only XBH of the night.  With two outs in the 6th inning, Tatis connected for his 11th HR, a three-run shot that drove in all three runs for the Mets' affiliate.

Pereira had a quality start, but saw his W-L record evened at 3-3.  He was fairly efficient with his pitch count too, needing just 80 pitches (53 strikes) through six innings.  Messenger made his fourth consecutive appearance without allowing a run.

AA: Connecticut hosting Binghamton was postponed by rain
(Just their second rain-out this year; no makeup date announced, although both teams have a scheduled off-day Monday at the end of the current series.)

A+: San Jose defeated Visalia 8-0

San Jose: 2B Matt Downs: 3 for 5, 2B, SB
San Jose: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 2 for 5, HR, 2B, SO
San Jose: RF Mike Mooney: 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB

San Jose: LHP Jesse English: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
San Jose: RHP Craig Whitaker: 2.0 IP, 3 K

Downs' three hits paced the Giants' fifteen-hit attack and improved his AVG to .280.  Rohlinger homered for the second straight day.  Mooney reached base in all four trips to the plate, improving his OBP to .571.

English had perhaps his best start of the year.  At least it was his first start without allowing an earned run, although only twice has he allowed more than a single earned run.  He had a 2/8 GO/FO line on an evening when officially the wind was blowing out at 13 mph to left field.  He now has 32 H, 11 BB and 37 K in 37.1 IP with a 2.65 ERA.  With three strikeouts and three groundball outs in two perfect innings, Whitaker had his most effective appearance among his ten relief appearances this season.  His WHIP fell below 2.00.

A-: Augusta lost to Columbus 5-3
(ending their nine-game winning streak)

Augusta: 2B Nick Noonan: 2 for 4, 3B
Augusta: SS Charlie Culberson: 2 for 3, BB

Augusta: RHP Daryl Maday: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K--1 WP
Augusta: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K

The young middle infielders Noonan and Culberson selected in the supplemental first round a year ago were the only two GreenJackets to reach base twice.  With two hits each, they raised their respective AVGs to .291 and .150.  Noonan had his 3rd triple.  Five of Culberson's dozen hits have come in his last three games.

After pitching quite effectively through eight long relief appearances (averaging 3.0 IP per appearance, excluding the one appearance with Connecticut), Maday made his first start and nearly doubled his ERA, although it remains below 2.00.  Perhaps the ground balls just found holes because all seven hits he allowed were singles and he had a 7/1 GO/FO line.  Joaquin had just his second appearance of the year without issuing a walk, but a couple runs raised his ERA to 4.37.

I refuse to say that I am...

First!

Mooney is a hitting machine so far!

It’s good to see English and Whitaker dominating in the same game.

Hopefully Mr. Culberson is starting to turn things around

Only 937 games until the end of Zito's contract

How 'bout that SJ offense!

Averaging nearly 6 runs a game…

All-Father Watch: 1.40 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 18 Ks in 19 1/3 IP

Mooney

If Mike continues to hit well, how long should he stay in A ball? It would be nice to see some mid season promotions, bump so players from A ball to AA and if any are deserving move some AA players to AAA and get some prospects moved to Fresno.

He’s way too old for Single A anyhow. He’ll be on the same bus as Pablito.

Mooney should go up sooner than Pablo, assuming he keeps up his performance for more than half a month. Pablo is in San Jose to work with a former major league catcher. Mooney isn’t.

True, although it should be pointed out

that “former major league catcher” is probably about the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about Steve Decker’s defensive aptitudes. In fact, if I’m not mistaken the phrase was more than once applied to him while he was still active.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

Dissing Steve Decker?!

But he was half of the Giants “Black & Decker” battery.

“Black & Decker”! Like the power tools! Don’t you get it?!

This always puzzles me too. Since when did Steve Decker become the Yoda of catching wisdom?

Regardless, if the bat is ready to move up, and it clearly is, the player needs to move up as well.

And Also

why isn’t he catching everyday instead of also playing some 1b? Heck if the Giants were willing to ante up to pay for Bonds’ posse of hanger-ons why can’t the Giants organization go out and hire a catching coach to teach Pablito how to catch while in Connecticut? Kirt Manwaring what are you doing this summer? Johnny Bench, there are golf courses in Connecticut.

Manwaring is a roving instructor

And yes, I’ve seen him in San Jose multiple times over last season and this.

Having aptitude does not necessarily make one a good coach. How many hitting coaches had .300+ AVGs while in baseball. I think there’s something to the hypothesis that it is marginal hitters, guys who struggle with their swing, who end up being the hitting coaches. For some players, it may just come more naturally. For those who have to do a lot of mental work, they seem often to be the ones who end up being the coaches.

Romo?

Gonna keep asking the question till someone’s got any insight: Where in the world is Romo? CT won 1-0 today and Osiris closed it out for his third save, with nary an appearance from Sergio.

Culberson with two more errors today (bringing his total to 19!), and Tanner got beat up yet again.

Noonan. Nooooonan!

Romo has a knee sprain nothing serious........

Paul Oseguera has a fingernail issue and that’s not serious either. Nate Bump and Josh Sharpless now in CT.
