The minors after one month
Well, just some hitters and pitchers of note.
Starting in Augusta:
Thomas Neal (1b) has 6 HR and an OPS of 1.060.
Nick Noonan is batting .297 but doesn't seem to have any strike zone judgement with 2BB/22K. He also has 11 Extra base hits in his 100 at bats.
Charlie Culberson seems to be failing his way out of the minors with an OPS of .334 and 15 errors.
Villalona is struggling, nothing really positive to say. His OPS is .598. 6 BB/21K. 80 At bats. 1 HR.
Madison Bumgarner has a 1.18 WHIP and 6/25 BB/K in 22 IP. A pretty nice start.
Some guy I'd never heard of: Clark Craig .89 WHIP 6/26 in 19 IP.
San Jose:
Pablo Sandoval is just destroying it at the plate. 1.395 OPS, 7 HR, 86AB, .500 OBP.
Actualy, the whole team is hitting pretty well. One of the worst hitters, so far, Tyler Graham has 18 SBs, his OPS of .702 is near the bottom.
Andy D'Alessio has an OPS just under 1.000. Matt Downs is at .840 with 4 HR and 8 SBs and 12 BB.
The starting pitchers have been pretty strong, too.
Tim Alderson: 1.07 WHIP, 7/17 in 27. No HR.
Ben Snyder: .92 WHIP, 4/23 in 29 with a 1.23 ERA.
Kevin Pucetas .94, 5/24 in 34.
Jesse English: 1.09, 8/28 in 26.
Taylor Wilding: 1.20, 2/13 in 8. He's the closer.
The team is 18-9 so far so no real surprise there are so many players doing well.
Connecticut:
Adam Witter: .995 OPS, 6 HR, 61 AB, 17BB, 22SO. That's a TON of K's for only 61 AB. I don't know much about him, anyone care to share?
EME: continues to show littler power. .625 OPS.
Other than Witter, no hitter is doing anything of note.
Sergio Romo: .41 WHIP, 1/13 in 12 IP.
Not much of interst in the pitching, either.
Fresno:
Justin Leone has 8 HR in 90 AB at 3b.
Schierholz has a .789 OPS.
and none of the pitchers has done anything terribly noteworthy.
All of this stuff can be found at minorleaguebaseball.com. I just browsed through and added any players that there is/was a decent buzz about and/or players that caught my eye. Enjoy!

Villalona
I live in NC and have had a chance to see him play…
You think his offensive numbers are bad? You should see his defense…
I am not condemning the kid and he is only 17 he has PLENTY of time to develop….BUT, he should not factor into our draft pick this year at all….
if the best player is a 1B, Sabean better take him….

However
D’alessio and Neal are both mashing in A+ and A- at 1B, and Sandoval has been playing there some too

A catch
D’Alessio and Neal are both on the older side for their playing levels, and hopefully Pablo will be the Giants’ catcher of the future. Part of Angel’s appeal is that he can take the ball the other way with power, but with his open stance, might he not be quite vulnerable to outside curve balls?
I believe in drafting the best prospect regardless of position, and while I hope it isn’t NECESSARY to draft a first base prospect, I certainly wouldn’t let any of the above prospects stand in the way of drafting one.

.Sir Thomas Neal is a pup. He is 20 yrs old and in low “A” ball which is fine.

yes Hinshaw, too....
i remembered him being injured or missing time last year, so he’s a surprise to me, but his stats for 2007 were good also, in limited time:
2008 – Fresno 0-0 0.84 9g 3sv 10.2 ip 5 h 1r 1er 0 hr 4 bb -14 ko .139 baa
2007 – Cnnicut 3-1 1.96 17g 0sv 41.1 ip 22h 13r 9er 2hr 19bb 50 k .155 baa
maybe he’s our next good reliever
good k/ip
the giants drafted this guy 3 times…

Witter’s nickname?
Too easy?
Too bland?
Forgive me, it’s my first attempt at coming up with a nickname.

Villalona
Question for those who have seen him. At his age, he seems to have power, but no polish. Does he have bat speed? Also, does anyone have any idea what the Giants did over the winter to protect their investment - and him - from the whims and wants of a 17-year-old with money?
by grizzled on May 1, 2008 10:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Villalona is struggling, nothing really positive to say. His OPS is .598. 6 BB/21K. 80 At bats. 1 HR.
Umm…He’s averaging 1.53 bases per hit, which is pretty good, I guess. And Augusta is a real pitchers league – league OPS of .688, so 598 isn’t that bad.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

There were three things that struck me about Angel…
1.He swings really hard. He is young and Dominican which means he is very macho and has a lot of testosterone flowing around in him. My guess is he is trying to hit way too many home runs. He swung so hard and missed on one pitch, that his bat broke when it came around and hit the ground on his backswing. I don’t know if I have ever seen that before.
2.He is gonna be a big fucking dude. He could stand to lose five pounds in his ass alone. See my avatar.
3.He has a lot of attitude. After some of his poor AB’s he was throwing shit around the dugout and yelling at himself. His teammates kind of just gave him the eye and went back to watching the game. The kid knows he is special, I just hope it makes him confident and not an asshole. We’ll see….
I don’t mean to point out only the negatives, but the kid has a long way to go. I am no scout, but he is far from a sure thing if you ask me.
With all of that being said, I wouldn’t be worried if his numbers continue to suffer this year. He is only 17…..the natural ability is obviously there….We will see what happens…

Why not?
It’s not like the writer stressed the adjective. Also Pride can help a person as much as hurt them. Or should we just ignore the culture a person learns life in? It does not mean he will always be the same just means those are the cards he is starting with.
Besides how can Kruger lose his job on this one? ;)

Just a little dangerous to generalize, I think. That’s all.

I get what you saying here. And I can't say your point is wrong.
I just feel the is responsibility on the reader to “hear” the written word in a few different voices then decide which is the most probably meant to be used by the writer.

you’re right, context disappears with the written word. If I can’t hear your voice, then I must decide where the emphasis is. You know, like in “My Cousin Vinny.”

Vilallona
I’m not worried about him and I think we as Giants fans, who are starved for hitting prospects, probably expected too much out of him. He’s still only what, 17? He could struggle all year long and still be a great prospect.
Most ETA’s I’ve seen for him start at 2011, that’s 3 years away. I’d say his problem right now might be that he’s pressing or trying too hard, he’s striking out a ton (25.3%) and hardly hitting any line drives (7%). It might take him a full season of minor league ball before he can really start to develop.
We’ve got the time.

Yeah, totally agree with everything you said…
The reason I bring up the fact that Angel is not a sure thing, is that I think Angel should not factor in at all with whom we select with our first pick. We have a lot of holes, but we should take the best player available, regardless of position, or who we have in our system right now.
by Sgt. Dingleberry on May 2, 2008 6:40 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup, and I agree with you. I hope the Giants take the best hitter available, even if he’s a 1B. Look at what the Brewers did last year with LaPorta. LaPorta is absolutely hammering the ball right now. If we did draft a 1B and by the grace of god both he and Angel develop well enough to be MLB starters, then you cross that bridge once you get there.

EME shows no power, no hustle, no fielding or anything else.......
of value. Waiver wire is the only option.
Witter, while leading the team in HRs and RBIs, defensively is tough to watch (6 PBs and 2 Es)

Is EME fully recovered from his shoulder surgery? The buzz about him coming out of college was pretty big, with just about every report raving about his hitting and ranting about his defense. Is he really this disinterested, or is he still recovering?
