Giant Rumors
from mlbtraderumors, the Giants' may claim Humberto Quintero off waivers, and the Dan Johnson talk has picked up again. I guess Johnson would be an improvment (god, it really is that bad) and I can't really care about Humberto Quintero one way or the other. Johnson at least provides some power, and he does hit left handed to help balance the lineup a little. I know that AT&T kills left handed hitters, but there needs to be some balance.

Johnson would help quite a bit, but Beane has no leverage, so let's not give up anything of value, please.
I think Quintero's a good choice for backup catcher, as long as he comes free. And as long as STEVE HOLM! gets called back up in September to fulfill his destiny of hitting a walkoff HR against the Dodgers.

FWIW
I signed Quintero as FA for the Giants in the offseason following 2008 in my baseball mogul game, and he's been awesome enough to become my full time starter by 2010 and hit in the middle of my much improved, but still struggling, offense.

Wait until HoustonGM's rosters come out on the Baseball Mogul forums. I find them the most accurate. I think they'll be out within the week.

It doesn't matter too much to me
Because I'm WAY more interested in the guys I'm drafting than the pre-existing players anyway. Once I'm ten years into a team, it won't make any difference to me anyway.
For future teams, though, I'll probably grab HGM's.

We already have a Venezuelan catcher who can't get on base
his name is Eliezer Alfonzo and he's only 6 months older than Quintero. That waiver pick up makes absolutely no sense. What would be the rationale behind it?
Dan Johnson makes perfect sense. I think he'd rate a nondescript cheap bullpen arm.
Bonds stands alone.
by nostocksjustbonds on Apr 9, 2008 12:15 PM PDT 0 recs
What about defense?
I don't know Bocock about Quintero's D, but I know that Alfonzo's is rancid. Having a backup catcher who can catch the ball would be a nice change.

I kinda suspected that may be a difference, but wasn't sure.
What then, about Holm? He obviously didn't rise through the organization because of his bat (.240/.332/.387 career minor league).
Also, wasn't Knoedler a pretty good defensive catcher? The Giants should have held on to him.

Sell Johnson...Buy Quiuntero
Dan Johnson is like Ray Durham. Decent player when healthy... which is seldom . What the stats tell
you doesn't tell you enough--2004 Vertigo; 2005 Decent Season-.806 OPS; 2006 Double Vision;
2007 Torn Hip Cartilage/Demoted to AAA; 2008 Illness-Lost 15 lbs. Hardly seems worth taking a flyer
on with his constant health problems.
Quintero would probably be an upgrade at back-up catcher. Offensively, has put-up decent numbers in
ML. Defensively, is highly-regarded and said to have an accurate, very powerful arm. Nice to have if
you're a running team and want to keep the other team's running game in check until you can conjure
a run in the late innings.

Molina and Winn may be the only two tradeable pieces the Giants have. My prediction is Molina has a big first half and Sabean gets some interesting offers for him. But then we get a quote like this:
At the end of the day it just wasn't prudent to trade our cleanup hitter for a player that may or may not be major league ready.

At least
ONE other person here understands the term "fire sale". I wonder if this team is lousy enough whether Winn would decide that maybe the no-trade clause is hurting his career (although I also believe that any clauses like that can be bought out with enough money or other bribery).
My only reservation is that Molina may be a good influence on Cain and Lincecum. That said, I'm sure there are old catchers hanging around somewhere that would be good influences on them, and I don't mean any on the roster now. (Wouldn't you think that if you have two franchise pitchers and several good young arms that you would, you know, want to develop a good catcher along with them? Or have a Jake Taylor/Crash Davis type around? I hoped that's what was happening when G-Rod was called up last year, but instead it was just incompetent roster management. Whoda thunk it.)

Our Friends from AN had this to say about Johnson when asked
Good stuff: great patience, lots of BBs. Decent power.
Bad stuff: Horrible approach, rolls over on every single outside pitch. I don't think he's ever hit the ball to left field.
If you don't include Molinas, he is one of the 5 slowest guys in the majors. Soul crushing number of groundouts to the right side.
The bad stuff sounds like every Giants for the last 4-5 years.

Johnson/Quintero
Johnson's worth a waiver claim if it gets that far, or giving up something of no value. Wouldn't want to give up anything of value though, and nor should we. Seems like we aren't interested, but that may change if the A's put him on waivers.
Quintero isn't a player i'd be too bothered about, but would probably be a slight upgrade, and would be worth a waiver claim. We obviously weren't interested in him though, as he cleared waivers & went to AAA.
