Ortmeier is a switch hitter no longer!

Switch-hitting Dan Ortmeier will begin batting exclusively from the right side.

Ortmeier, who has started the season 1-for-11, is a natural righty. "Right now, obviously, I feel more confident right-handed. It's my natural side, and it always comes back to me quicker," Ortmeier said. The 22-year-old has been adjusting to first base, but with Dave Roberts out he got the start in left field against a southpaw on Tuesday.
Rotoworld says he's 22 which would be fantastic! I think it's a good move and we'll see if it increases his value at all. What do everyone else think?

Making him 22 is definitely a good move. They should have thought of that sooner!

May want to suggest...

That he not attempt that shitty fake bunt anymore.

while we're at it

can we send a memo to shelve that REAL shitty bunt?

I was always disappointed that we didn't get more Mark's Weeny jokes when he was around.

It was a bit of a wasted opportunity.

And now the A's get to have twice the fun!

He is Vengeance. He is the Knight. He is Dave Righetti. PRAY TO HIM!

I made some, but it never caught on. As always, I'm way ahead for my time.

The Athletics have two Sweeneys. A plethora, if you will.

Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

I don't know. Sending him back in time 5 years could be risky. What if he kills his own father or something like that? Then he would never have existed, which would effectively reduce his trade value to zero. On the other hand, that's an open roster spot.

I'm on the fence.

even if he kills his father from 5 years ago, the sperm and egg have still joined, right? Now, if we sent him 35 years into the past we'd have to worry...

The Real Problem

with sending him back in time is the Chaos Theory :-)

This is an untimely development

Why now? Does this organization have anyone in player development or are the minor leaguers just ignored while Sabes kicks the tires on gritty free agents? Ortmeier has been in the organization for years and no one has thought about this until he is needed on the MLB level? Great now we have a great righty-righty platoon at first.

It's always depressing when a player does this after it's probably too late to salvage his career. Switch-hitting is a ridiculously overrated skill, and I'm surprised teams don't discourage it more aggressively.

by Evan on Apr 9, 2008 10:15 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I concur.

Switch Hitting is only valuable if you demonstrate a significant platoon against opposite or same hand pitching. Often, thats not the case.

More often the case is you are just better from one side of the plate. That doesn't make you a switch hitter, it makes you a good right hander and a shitty left hander.

Unless the pitcher has an extreme platoon split, I think it's pretty much worthless.

Ort's best hit as a pro was lefty

One of the best moments of 2007 was when Dan hit a walk off bomb to straight away center field off of Dodgers’ Broxton.

by tyrannoman on Apr 9, 2008 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, with a Bochy way of thinking

That means he should bat lefty all the time.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Apr 9, 2008 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Over the winter

I suggested over the winter that Dan should at least look into batting exclusively righthanded. Why didn't he do so over the winter when he had lots of time to work on it?

The Giants almost always seem to be reactive rather than proactive.

As an example, when they gave a first baseman's glove to Dan, why didn't they also give one to Nate Schierholtz? The two might have made a decent platoon.

by sharksrog on Apr 9, 2008 5:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I would think

that Nate's performence at 3B scared everyone so much they want him as far away from the IF as possible. Only a guess, but when you move a promising prospect from 3B to RF, you're pretty much admitting that ground balls are not his forte.

by tyrannoman on Apr 10, 2008 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wouldn't it be awesome if he won a game with his first at-bat as a righty against a right-handed pitcher? I'd love to see that.

by Grant on Apr 9, 2008 10:04 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If he switched from..

Being a home run hitter to not being a home run hitter, why would he switch?

Because, strategically speaking, sometimes you need a not home run.

Though statistically speaking, of course, you don't.
