San Francisco Giants at Milwaukee Brewers, Apr 6, 2008 11:05 AM PDT

Barry Zito against...Ben Sheets? Pfft. What does that guy make? Only $11M? He can't possibly be good. Yeah, call us when you get an ACE making $18M, Brewers. Then we can have an evenly matched ace-off.

Isn't Zito only making like $14 million this year?

Thanks to the wonderful world of backloading.

Roberts LF
Velez RF
Lewis CF
Durham 2B
Castillo 3B
Aurilia 1B
Holm C
Bocock SS

I think I threw up in my mouth a little.

BTW, why does Bocock, who leads the team in OBP and OPS (yes, small sample size i know) batting 8th?

by Viliphied on Apr 6, 2008 10:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And why is He of the Terrible Defense in CF?

by Viliphied on Apr 6, 2008 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, you have to expect Bocock to eventually remember that he's Brian Bocock. I haven't seen all his base hits, but the strikeouts I've seen have been all Bococked up.

Can't answer the CF question.

Go Steve Holm! First MLB start, right? I just hope he doesn't embarrass himself.

On the bright side

1) Bengie Molina isn't batting cleanup
2) Aaron Rowand isn't batting behind Bengie Molina

That's two things I wanted to happen, happening!

I'm actually pretty happy to see the young lineup again. I just wish Aurilia wasn't a part of it.

OF alignment is interesting. Big "D" in the 4-hole. When does Sabean make that trade for the LHH 1b he keeps talking about? Best of luck to the rookie Holm in his start. Have Zito keep the ball down. Hope Zito gets some movement on his pitches today. Maybe today is the day the bullpen gets some rest. No, seriously.

It's been a few years since I read Moneyball, but if I remember right, Michael Lewis went on about how the A's were smarter than other teams because the were the only ones who realized Barry Zito was a better pitcher than Ben Sheets. I think most Giants fans would disagree about that particular assessment after watching the first inning.

Forget the salary

This game, so far, shows Zito needs crisp fielding and a modicum of luck (the occasional line drive at some one instead of in the gap) to get off a "quality" start. Does that make him a legitimate No. 4 pitcher or is he not even that good.

Luck is the shameful watchword with Zito

Cain had none last year, and we could still see his greatness

Decline

It will be interesting to see how he handles his continuing decline. My sense is that he's basically a good guy and reasonably smart. The question is whether he can transform himself into Jamey Moyer and, if so, will it happen in time for us to get some of the benefit.

And to answer the earlier question, there are some pitchers I wouldn't take over Zito. Josh Fogg. Florida's #4 and 5, whoever they are. The ghost of Odalis Perez.

I like NN's point, above ... it'll be interesting to see of Zito and adjust into a Jamey Moyer model.

Yes,

FukU looks good: very good plate approach, ie fouls of good pitches that he cannot hit, ignores pitches that he doesn't like, then hits the pitches he wants. Combined with good D, and the ability to run.

It's best that we not rile up the Brewers too much by scoring while Zito is still pitching. If we can stay close enough to catch up in the inning when we pinch hit for Zito, things might work out.

Omar has advantage with positioning and though. Bocock has more range, stronger arm. Omar also gets paid more so Omar will play. Thats how we plan to lock up the basement as well as ensure we make as little progress for the future as well.

Not yet

Bocock may have surpassed him on the basics -- range, arm strength, speed, etc. -- but Omar still knows a huge amount Bocock needs to learn about positioning on particular hitters and the tricks of the trade, like when to throw behind a runner rounding third, how to take the feed from the second baseman on the outside of the glove on a dp and so forth.

I hope so

it's hard to tell from the radio broadcast what kind of jumps they are getting and the routes they are running. One call described Lewis "running out of room" and the ball bouncing off the base of the wall. They can't both be true.

that one wasn't on Freddie

it was hit to the base of the wall, he just couldn't get to it in time

Both Fred and Eugenio made good plays off the carom. I'm used to watching our fielders flail at a ball hit off the wall, but both those guys made clean pickups on the balls off the wall.

The matchup of last century was when William VanLandingham started for the Giants against Jason Isringhausen, starting for the Mets. Never before in baseball history had two started pitchers combined for so much name length.

well, he is pitching against the most anemic lineup in MLB

but he's had great stuff all day. his breaking ball has been absurd all day.

Nice, but there's quite a bit more to say about how Braun played it. He seemed relieved to have caught it.

I like to leave that sort of thing to the audience's imagination.

However...
Fred did feel all flushed with fever
embarassed by his out
He watched Braun catch his line drive
then throw it to the crowd.

12 runs in 6 games, on pace for 324 runs scored.. a new record

by Azmanz on Apr 6, 2008 1:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I wasn't kidding when I put the overunder on 400 runs this year.

I figured them to average about 2.5 runs per game. Or about 405 runs if they play all 162. I figure they will probably lose 1 game to a rainout that wont' be replayed so figure 402 runs. Run off. and voila. Last year they averaged 4.2 runs per game with Barry. I figure Barry was good for a run and a half per game in which he played or about 150 runs. That takes you from 683 to about 533. Everybody else is about 15% less due to age so that accounts for 15% of 533 or approximately 80 runs. To that puts us at 453 projected in a vacum. The rest of the West pitching got stronger though, so throw out another 50 or so runs and we end up at 400 runs.

It could happen.

so to extrapolate from the first two series:

50% of games to be blowout losses
33.3% to be close losses
16.6% to be close wins

Final tally: 27-135

Peering ahead to Steve S.

Connecticut wins again with more strong pitching. If Rosario keeps this up, Bocock may have another challenger as Vizquel's successor.

Really?

what is the scoop on the guy? where did he come from?

by wilriv21 on Apr 6, 2008 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rosario

They signed him out of independent ball -- a former Rays minor leaguer who led the Can-Am league in a bunch of categories last year.

by NearestNorwich on Apr 6, 2008 2:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

PS

Credit where due -- this info from Greg's Connecticut Defenders blog. Rosario led the league in hits and was close to the top in the other categories, to be more specific.

Glad I missed this pile of crap.

We made Sheets look like the next coming of Cy Young. Zito looked like a AAA starter with arm problems. If you are play Ortmeir than play him. Give Auriella the rest of his life off. Why is Henny still any where near the team? Could he be any worse?

Just bring the kids up at least then we would have an excuse for looking this bad. ARGH!!!!!

Sometimes you just have to take a dump.

by Ortman on Apr 6, 2008 4:20 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No difference between 3-0 and 7-0

This was a perfect game for Henny Penny. In fact, he should be saved up for the games Zito starts- 5 innings for Zueter and 4 for Henny. If they're going to have any chance in the close games they need a mop up guy. Maybe two for this team (if only Yabu hadn't blinded himself with a rubber band).

by natteringnabob on Apr 6, 2008 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs
