Barry Zito against...Ben Sheets? Pfft. What does that guy make? Only $11M? He can't possibly be good. Yeah, call us when you get an ACE making $18M, Brewers. Then we can have an evenly matched ace-off.

Grant -- with Vito here, it's not personal.
It's strictly contractual in nature.
Roberts LF
Velez RF
Lewis CF
Durham 2B
Castillo 3B
Aurilia 1B
Holm C
Bocock SS
I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
BTW, why does Bocock, who leads the team in OBP and OPS (yes, small sample size i know) batting 8th?

On the bright side
1) Bengie Molina isn't batting cleanup
2) Aaron Rowand isn't batting behind Bengie Molina
That's two things I wanted to happen, happening!
I'm actually pretty happy to see the young lineup again. I just wish Aurilia wasn't a part of it.

Some habits die hard with Bochy
Giving a veteran plenty of time to hit.
Like all of 2007 and part of 2008.
OF alignment is interesting. Big "D" in the 4-hole. When does Sabean make that trade for the LHH 1b he keeps talking about? Best of luck to the rookie Holm in his start. Have Zito keep the ball down. Hope Zito gets some movement on his pitches today. Maybe today is the day the bullpen gets some rest. No, seriously.
Barry Zito
is gonna give you up, he's gonna let you down, he's gonna run around and desert you. He's gonna make you cry, he's gonna tell a lie and hurt you. He *is* however never gonna say goodbye.
Giants have
a higher team OBP than the Yankees, Rox, and two other teams. We're dead last in SLG though ....
(although I'm *sure* it's only a matter of time until the post-Bonds team spirit kicks in, and a few of the boys start slugging .863 and .812 ...)
A lopsided race to the deadly end
Between post-Bonds and post-Mortem for this team
Or...
Just Oprah?

Bumgarner gave up a single, dobule, run in the first inning. Oh yeah, he also struck out the side.

He may not need to use Zito's faux tricks
Such as hiding behind an inpenetrable curtain of line drives
It's been a few years since I read Moneyball, but if I remember right, Michael Lewis went on about how the A's were smarter than other teams because the were the only ones who realized Barry Zito was a better pitcher than Ben Sheets. I think most Giants fans would disagree about that particular assessment after watching the first inning.
poor Holm

The fastball can be knocked into the tenth row
The changeup, with a critical 6 mph missing, 78 is usually only a triple off the wall
1st inning
As thrilling as it was to see Zito navigate a scoreless first inning, this has to be seen as the game that marks the sayonara to any hope of seeing .500 again this year. There is no way this team will ever manage a four-game win streak.
EME
I'll do that the same way you will, reading Steve S. religiously. I'm nearest Norwich in terms of our minor league teams but actually a long way away in New Jersey. I try to see them in Trenton against the Yankees farm team.

Forget the salary
This game, so far, shows Zito needs crisp fielding and a modicum of luck (the occasional line drive at some one instead of in the gap) to get off a "quality" start. Does that make him a legitimate No. 4 pitcher or is he not even that good.

Decline
It will be interesting to see how he handles his continuing decline. My sense is that he's basically a good guy and reasonably smart. The question is whether he can transform himself into Jamey Moyer and, if so, will it happen in time for us to get some of the benefit.

Not yet
Bocock may have surpassed him on the basics -- range, arm strength, speed, etc. -- but Omar still knows a huge amount Bocock needs to learn about positioning on particular hitters and the tricks of the trade, like when to throw behind a runner rounding third, how to take the feed from the second baseman on the outside of the glove on a dp and so forth.

In the Services of Zito although he will have to get his velocity up a little
Average?
I think the average was lower. 86 might have been when he was overthrowing off the plate. At Barry's speed, it's not pace but movement and location that is the key. Cf. Greg Maddux

I always liked him though and still would like to see him do well
But man if he were a free agent right now I am not sure if he could get 1 mill a year
Not even minimum... he's done.
He's been on a downward slide for years, and unless he gets on peds (which I highly recommend btw) he is through.

Trust me I would love to see Zito do well for you guys
So we could get Oakland vs SF in the world series too bad both teams are not very good. I really do not know what is wrong with Zito I think it could be 2 thing either he is injured or he is not taking HGH or Steroids anymore.
Or he flat out sucks?

Zito = Posterboy
for everything that is wrong with this team.
Bad scouting
Overpaid
Slacker

by E Ticket on Apr 6, 2008 1:07 PM PDT reply actions
Not that his contract isn't a huge waste, but the main problem with the Giants isn't massively overpaid big-name pitchers, it's moderately overpaid no-name position players. So the real poster boy would probably be someone more like Dave Roberts.
its both. the zito signing is worse from a PR standpoint
it is the lighting rod for all the ire.

Sabean apparently views Ortmeier
As a Wisconsin Bratwurst salesman
Fielding
Richie is still a better fielder at 1B than Ort. They have to be concerned about having the pitchers routinely be forced to get 4 or 5 outs an inning. We are already compromising on fielding by playing Fred Lewis and Velez.

it's hard to tell from the radio broadcast what kind of jumps they are getting and the routes they are running. One call described Lewis "running out of room" and the ball bouncing off the base of the wall. They can't both be true.

Both Fred and Eugenio made good plays off the carom. I'm used to watching our fielders flail at a ball hit off the wall, but both those guys made clean pickups on the balls off the wall.

Nice, but there's quite a bit more to say about how Braun played it. He seemed relieved to have caught it.
I like to leave that sort of thing to the audience's imagination.
However...
Fred did feel all flushed with fever
embarassed by his out
He watched Braun catch his line drive

109 total pitches
i think Timmy threw that many during the rain delay earlier in the week
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.
I wasn't kidding when I put the overunder on 400 runs this year.
I figured them to average about 2.5 runs per game. Or about 405 runs if they play all 162. I figure they will probably lose 1 game to a rainout that wont' be replayed so figure 402 runs. Run off. and voila. Last year they averaged 4.2 runs per game with Barry. I figure Barry was good for a run and a half per game in which he played or about 150 runs. That takes you from 683 to about 533. Everybody else is about 15% less due to age so that accounts for 15% of 533 or approximately 80 runs. To that puts us at 453 projected in a vacum. The rest of the West pitching got stronger though, so throw out another 50 or so runs and we end up at 400 runs.
It could happen.

33.3% to be close losses

Peering ahead to Steve S.
Connecticut wins again with more strong pitching. If Rosario keeps this up, Bocock may have another challenger as Vizquel's successor.
Rosario
They signed him out of independent ball -- a former Rays minor leaguer who led the Can-Am league in a bunch of categories last year.
PS
Credit where due -- this info from Greg's Connecticut Defenders blog. Rosario led the league in hits and was close to the top in the other categories, to be more specific.

Glad I missed this pile of crap.
We made Sheets look like the next coming of Cy Young. Zito looked like a AAA starter with arm problems. If you are play Ortmeir than play him. Give Auriella the rest of his life off. Why is Henny still any where near the team? Could he be any worse?
Just bring the kids up at least then we would have an excuse for looking this bad. ARGH!!!!!
Sometimes you just have to take a dump.
No difference between 3-0 and 7-0
This was a perfect game for Henny Penny. In fact, he should be saved up for the games Zito starts- 5 innings for Zueter and 4 for Henny. If they're going to have any chance in the close games they need a mop up guy. Maybe two for this team (if only Yabu hadn't blinded himself with a rubber band).
