Exceeding low expectations
I'm pleased with Brian Bocock.
Yes, he is a graduate of the Ruben Rivera school for Runners Who Can't Run Good and Can't Do Other Stuff Good Too. But the D has been exceptional in the regular season, so far. He looks good turning the Duece, hasn't made any terrible throws.
The best part has been the offense.I know this has a lot to do with my expectations of him, and probably a lot to do with him hitting eighth as well. But,he has an Approach! 6 walks! That's an awful lot for a Giant. And does he pay royalties to Lansford for that opposite field nubber based hitting style? Love it.
Of course, it's only been a week, and I'm sure the scouting departments aren't knocking themselves out trying to come up with ways to get Brian Bocock out (especially since the best way so far is let him get on - he'll do the work from there).
This is the kind of season we're looking at. I'm just happy that one part of the team hasn't been as bad as I expected.

Yeah, I guess if you're you're going to be bad at one thing, getting picked off stupidly is probably the easiest thing to fix. As you said, the defense has been as advertised and the offense has been far better than expected. I like the fact that he appears to go up to the plate with a plan.

Oh yeah
Just you watch. He's getting 100 walks this year. Just you wait and see.
Only 968 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Haters to the left.
Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

That's what she said!
Except she didn't necessarily say "sample size."

Not only the D...
but he's been hitting better than most of our lineup. I'm pretty impressed by that, no matter how bad our lineup is. He was supposed to be the worst one in it. Maybe now when Omar comes back, he can go back down to AA or whatever with more confidence and he can make himself into a valuable prospect. All those pickoffs are starting to piss me off though... He just needs to take a shorter lead and not try to steal... Which reminds me, who the hell is our baserunning coach and why does he suck?

Roberto Kelly
I think the answer is
1) the young guys aren't good baserunners yet
2) we're running anyway

and
(3) No one has bothered to coach them since Sakata.

and
the last time he took a lead was in Low A.
I sure wish that Ort Cloud would form a solid sphere to enter into this team's orbit.

and furthermore
This game is really complicated. Like astrophysics compared to knitting class.
Anyone else think the Justice League of National is more strategic & interesting than the Justice League of America?

It didn't make any sense. Needles? Threads? Perl? Slow down!

Bocock seems to have a decent idea of the strike zone and for the most part has swung at the right pitches. His bat doesn't stay long enough in the zone, I think.

Bocock has 3x as many walks as the next Giant (6, Aurilia, Durham, Velez and Winn all have 2) and is the OBP leader among position players by a solid .151.
Whoever taught him his patience needs to be our new batting coach.

Well, I guess I'd better step forward, then.
It was me, guys. Job's mine.
So, ummm... where can I find payroll?

Oh god, it's true!
And only Bocock's personal baserunning coach at that!
I swear, we were getting to pick off moves this month. It's not my fault they called him up!

I think
I think this season is mostly about keeping Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain healthy, about the #5 overall draft pick, and about the Giants' prospects at Class A. The last time a Giants season was so little about the big club was likely back in 1985, when the Giants lost 100 games for the only time in franchise history -- but drafted Will Clark.

So you listed 4 things
And the team has already begun sabatoging 2 of them.
Go team!
