Okay, so call me crazy...

...but it seems to me that when you’ve got a runner on and 2 out, your pitcher is up, and he just threw 32 pitches in the last inning to bring him up to 98 on the day – meaning he’s maybe got one more inning, if you’re lucky – and you’re down by one run, that would be a good time to pinch hit for him.

random bleacher etiquitte question

This isn’t journal worthy so I’m going to randomly put it here – what’s the general thought on cussing in the bleachers? I was asked by a lady with a boy to watch my language last night after saying “shit” when FLew got thrown out at home on that whack double steal.

She asked nicely enough so I made sure to watch my mouth, but I mean.. it’s the bleachers. If you bring your kids there shouldn’t you expect for a little flavored language to be present? Or am I totally off base? Sometimes I want to get a little drunk and cuss at some ballplayers, naw mean? =)

by fwoty oz on Apr 30, 2008 3:41 PM PDT reply actions

IMO

As long as you aren’t getting out of control, don’t sweat it. If you don’t want your kid to hear cussing, don’t sit in the bleachers.

Eugeniooooooo!!!!

by FairweatherFan on Apr 30, 2008 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

that's what I figured

was my first bleacher game though so I wasn’t sure if it was ok to get a little looser down there.

There are smoking sections in the park. Just the same there’s a swearing section – it’s called the bleachers. Let the potty mouth continue.

Adult diaper...

Depends.

I don’t think you’re off base. But then again, I don’t think the lady was either. Families with kids have as much of a right to sit in the bleachers as anyone. And I would think that it’d be an attractive option for a family on a budget.

I think the way the lady and you both handled things was exactly right. You didn’t have to stop cussing, but it was nice of you to do so. The lady probably knew you could’ve refused her request, so she asked nicely.

I guess it just depends on the situation. If there are kids around, and someone asks nicely, you probably figure, “I can hold off today and still enjoy the game”.

That's all I can stands, I can't stands no more!

Some thoughts from the bleachers, on the off-chance anyone checks the thread this long after the game

I was there, in section 136, the last section of bleachers before the left field foul pole. Some thoughts:

- I had a pretty clear view of the contested steal at third base, and it really looked like Darling blew it completely. Of course, I was a long way away, and didn’t get a replay – was he as full of it as he appeared? And is it just me, or did Bochy look bored trying to argue it? Ugh.

- Speaking of Darling, I’m happy to say he was thoroughly booed when he was announced before the game, and the fans stayed on him throughout, continuing to call for balks every time a Rockies pitcher threw to first or stepped off the mound with runners on.

- I know Bowker has sucked lately, but I’d still rather he be in the lineup than Aurilia, because there’s at least a chance of him not sucking in the future. He didn’t look back at the plate today – he hit the ball well a couple times, and worked the count a bit.

- I didn’t think there was a chance in hell Lewis was going to catch that line drive. Incredible. Definitely the highlight of the game.

- Section 136 isn’t far from the Giants’ bullpen, and MAN were Merkin Valdez’s warm-up pitches loud. It was actually kind of hard to pay attention – I kept getting by the pop of the ball in the bullpen catcher’s glove. On the other hand, I barely even noticed Tyler Walker warming up. He’s no Kirk Rueter, but the audible difference was huge. Brian Wilson was somewhere in between.

- I was really surprised they let Sanchez bat for himself in the fifth. Valdez had already warmed up twice by then, and was clearly ready to go – when he came back out to the bullpen mound in the top of the sixth, he spent half his time just standing around waiting, and only occasionally threw warm-up pitches until he was called in.

- With that having been said, I was worried when Valdez came in. As hard as he was throwing, his control warming up was pretty erratic – he almost threw a pitch to the back-stop in his final warm-ups on the mound. He really impressed me, though. After all the injuries and delays to his development, and the change to his name and age, I think we’ve got a special reliever in him. He and Wilson could be the foundation of a very good bullpen for years to come.

- In the seventh inning stretch, I caught a bag of Cracker Jack’s thrown by Lou Seal himself. Envy me.

- The attendance was the sparsest I can remember seeing since the Candlestick days. Though I guess ~30,000 would’ve been a decent number at Candlestick.

- I was sitting in the fifth row of section 136, as I said. Other than my seat, though, the first ten rows of the section were taken up by a class of eighth graders on their end of the year class trip. This was, to say the least, the low-light of the game for me. Where to even begin? Well, for one thing, almost none of them cared at all about the game. Instead, they spent the whole time yelling conversations to friends seated four or five rows away from them, standing up and wandering around in the middle of plays for no reason, sitting with their backs turned to the field, strewing garbage and assorted crap everywhere, and roughhousing. The two boys directly in front of me spent the entire first three innings of the game playing a homoerotic game of rock-paper-scissors (it involved hand-holding and slapping that nearly crossed the line from roughhousing and into BDSM). At one point a few of them started singing “Copa Cabana.” Then four of them spent the last few innings playing a vocabulary-building game. They were possibly the least cool teenagers ever to exist, which is quite a statement coming from me, because I would’ve thought I had that title sewed up in my younger days. And then they all left one batter into the ninth inning, and suddenly, I was the only person left in the first ten rows of the section. WORST FANS EVER.

by jcb9 on Apr 30, 2008 6:14 PM PDT reply actions

- Replays showed that it was an out. Thanks again, Darling!
