Mike Hampton Scratched from Return Start
Damn. F the Braves, but it's hard not to feel bad for the guy.
Linky, plus pasted in its entirety below.
ATLANTA -- Mike Hampton was scratched just before he was scheduled to make his much-anticipated return to the mound at Turner Field on Thursday night. Instead of making his first start since 2005, the injury-plagued southpaw found himself sidelined yet again. When Hampton was warming up in the bullpen, he felt some discomfort and was forced to stop. It wasn't clear what was ailing him, and the Braves didn't provide an immediate update. At approximately 7:05 p.m. ET, which was five minutes before the scheduled first pitch, Braves third-base coach Brian Snitker went to the Pirates' dugout with a message. A few minutes later, Braves manager Bobby Cox had a short meeting with the umpires.
With Hampton unable to pitch, the Braves were given an additional 10 minutes to allow Jeff Bennett to warm up. Hampton was planning to make his first start since Aug. 19, 2005. He missed the past two seasons recovering from separate surgeries on his left elbow.
This is the final season of Hampton's eight-year, $121 million contract.

See? Zito's contract will eventually end too.
2008 Giants: A steaming pile of scrap!
So like what year is that in Star Date language?

Geez
He should just take the Ankiel route and become a hiter. He could play first for the Giants.

That contract really does make ZIto's look amazing. At least Zito is almost assured to make his starts.
I'm not so sure about this new layout.......
Zito is gone by the end of this year when his fb drops to 38 mph

No way
He'll totally make a mechanical adjustment that keeps him from dipping below 40 as long as he throws with his feet.

I've never felt bad for Mike Hampton
"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."
this completely sums him up by the way
"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."
This
He got a shot at the dream of being a major league ballplayer and made more than $100 million.
What are the odds I do either of those things?

Rockies and Marlins both
Cot's has the gory details. The Rox traded him to the Fish after 2002, paying about $32M of his remaining contract. Florida kicked in another $23M and shipped him to Atlanta. The Braves ended up paying almost nothing for him in 2003-2005, the years he actually pitched for them, but have shelled out around $14M each of the last three seasons (including 2008) for the privilege of reading his medical charts.
2008: My previous assessment may have been overly optimistic.
I should also note...
...that the Marlins, besides paying that sizeable chunk of salary to a guy who never pitched for them, received in trade Tim Spooneybarger and Ryan Baker, who, combined, played exactly one season in Florida.
The Mike Hampton contract: so bad, it screwed three separate franchises!

Yeah.
The Braves
The Marlins
The Rockies.
Heh.

fodder for Jayson Stark
In this game Hampton was to have started, Bobby Cox made an unusual pitching change. The game went into extra innings and, probably because of an already-depleted bullpen, he sends right-handed reliever Chris Resop to face some righty bats from the Pirates. Now lefty Adam LaRoche is up, with righty Xavier Nady behind him, and there's only one out with runners at 1st and 2nd. So Cox sends Resop into left field and brings in left-handed reliever Royce Ring to face LaRoche. Ring gets LaRoche, and then Cox pulls Resop back out of left field to face Nady.
The move didn't work, as Resop gave up the losing hit to Nady, but ... well I thought it was interesting nonetheless.
As a friend told me, Mike Hampton is as reliable as a crackhead who owes money.
Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

He's reliable
You just have to rely on him for the right things. Like being hurt.
