bad game management in two days. So...let's see. You have a runner on 3B, one out and you send an injured LH batter to the plate.

...if they started Lincecum, they might have only gotten 4 innings out of him before the rain delay.

Instead, they got four innings out of Valdez, Taschner, and Lincecum combined. If the game resumes the bullpen will need to pitch the last five.

No problem! Bring in the long relief guy! Meaning, the guy you just used in late-inning situations the last two nights...

Lincecum prepared before the game in for the start, cooled down over the first 3 innings, then warmed up in the 4th to relieve. He threw one inning (but a good number of pitches). He'll cool down again during the rain delay, and he should be done for the night.

But Bochy's in charge, so who knows.

We don't start Lincecum, then we put him in AFTER it starts raining, and then there's a rain delay and it all went so wrong. We must be the unluckiest so-and-so's alive. They honestly could not have handled this worse. If they start Timmy, they get 4 innings and the pen can go the rest. If they stay with the pen one more inning, they are ready now to bring in Timmy until the 8th or 9th.

by Josh from Hollywood on Apr 2, 2008 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Clearly

Clearly they misjudged the rain situation. Or they may have felt that they had a chance to plate a run or two before the rain hit and possibly win the game in five innings or so. The one thing now is that they might be able to bring Tim back say on Saturday.

That could leave them with a rotation that has Tim followed by Zito, followed by Cain, which might not be all bad. That would also leave Jonathan Sanchez available for some relief work tonight or over the weekend, since he wouldn't be needed until next Tuesday.

he has not stretch out his arm this spring so 2 innings is plenty. Wonder is they could stretch him out during Zito's starts. Zito starts and goes 5 and Merkin could begin with 2 and stretch to 4, 5 or 6 innings eventually

Kruk was defending this. Apparently Lincecum never ices his arm, and he doesn't spend much time warming up. There's reason to believe he won't be damaged here.

Kruk was not defending the decision. He went as far as to say that if Lincecum comes up with a "stiff arm" in the next few days, there will be some serious questioning. Only then did he point out the unusual aspects of Lincecum's regimen.

But -- this decision is totally inconsistent with the way the Giants babied this guy at the end of last year and over the winter. So were they wrong then or wrong now?

Or both?
