Corrected Box Score

The Giants had 13 hitters reach base, but they only scored twice. So it isn't as if the Giants deserved to win. But Lincecum sure as hell doesn't deserve the loss.

you know..
..I actually found the call defensible until I read Darling’s comment to the press. I could have believed his reacting to the timeout request, and as he stood to do so, deciding to call the balk. Ticky-tack, supremely stupid, but defensible. But no. In the paper, Darling claims, “He started, stopped, then Bengie tried to cover for him by calling the timeout. Whether he didn’t have the sign or not, I don’t know about that, what was going on there.”
Which is, to use the technical term, a steaming pile.
No, having read that I am quite sure: it was a bad call, by an umpire who was not man enough to correct himself. Depressing, that, though hardly unexpected. Still, I can’t sympathize with the Giants. The Giants suck, and deserved to lose. If they fielded one or two actual hitters, they’d have won this one 6-3.
That’s no defense of a terrible call.

Having finally seen the video
The order of actions was apparent:
1-Benji calls time
2-Umpire grants time
3-Lincecum stops motion
4-Umpire motions for runner to come home
That sequence of events, caught on tape, should get Darling fired.
My one question is why Molina was asking for time so late. Oh well- I certainly agree we can’t pin the loss on this, but it still sucks.

Wow that’s blatantly what did not happen. Does Darling know that TV cameras were on him the whole time and we SAW the replay in which he called time FIRST and then he called a balk? What an idiot.

Giants wins are hard to come by...
and it doesn’t help when an egocentric umpire takes a game out of your hands and gives it to the opposition. He knew he made a mistake. But umpires have a code: Never admit it and never fix what you screwed up. So he had to go to the press and offer that quote in order to reassure himself and the other umpires in the league that he is just another asshole who will never admit mistakes and now he can continue believing that his shit is made of gold. With that said, the Giants base-running was asinine and moronic.

I don’t think it’s a matter of whether the Gs DESERVED to win or not. By the same token, you cannot say that the Rockies DESERVED to win either. It’s irrelevant. The point is that we don’t know how that game would have unfolded had that call not been made. Because of the balk, Cook stayed in the game, and the Rockies didn’t have to rely on their sucky bullpen. From there, we don’t know what would have happened. The fact of the matter is that the Bastard made an ABOMINABLE call that changed the game. And then lied about the televised EVIL to the whole world. God and Allah should punish him.

There are few situations in professional sports...
Where the umpire/referee can just give the other team points semi-arbitrarily. In the NBA, spurious fouls and technicals are one example. In baseball, we have the Balk.
IMO, with a runner on 3rd the balk should only be used in the case where a pickoff throw is actually made. The balk is much too arbitrary a call to be the dertmining factor in whether or not a team scores, and there is nothing the pitcher can do to overcome the adversity.
It’s one thing to get a bad call on balls/strikes and have to pitch from a hole, or to get a runner balked into scoring position and work through that… but balking a runner IN gives the pitcher zero chance to overcome the situation. That in of itself is counter the spirit of baseball.
Let the players decide the game. Balking in a runner from 3rd is one of the rare opportunities where the umpires can take the game ENTIRELY out of the hands of the players and significantly affect the outcome.
Fucking Disgusting.

balks with runners on 3rd are OK
If balks aren’t allowed to be called with a runner on third, who knows what pitchers can come up with. For example, a balk is called when a pitcher is standing on the rubber during the hidden ball trick; so a 3rd baseman can possibly take advantage in that scenario. Balks are not arbitrary the way the NFL calls pass interference or NBA refs call fouls in the sense that there is a precise way for pitchers to either pitch or attempt a pick off. We saw it called correctly a few days ago against Colo., for which Clint Hurdle also got ejected. But last night, the umpire was simply dead wrong.

I was housesitting for a friend who actually gets Comcast Sports Net, so I was able to watch a cable broadcast of the team for the first time all season. When Darling called that balk, my first thought was, “I bet the McCoven aren’t too happy about that.”
It was a lame, lame, lame call, but as pointed out, Velez has no business getting picked off first with the team down by one run; Lewis has no business trying to steal home with the cleanup hitter at the plate and one out; and Winn has no business basically leaving second base on contact when the ball is hit right to the shortstop. The Giants should have won that game 6-3 or 7-3, and the balk would have been a “LOL Gary Darling” moment.

I would add that Randy Winn swinging on at a 3-0 pitch with a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth is neither scrappy nor particularly gamerish.
Agree also with Fairweather – she’s better looking in person, but comically untalented. I think it’s funny that none of her interviewees look her in the eye; lack of respect, much?

XX chromosome sportswriter soapbox ready for takeoff
Ms. Guiterrez’s presence frustrates me. As Fairweather Fan said, she looks like she is trying at least, but the position (make your jokes) doesn’t allow for it. If she does spend her time thinking of the asinine questions to ask these guys on air and if she has brain one in her head, she probably thinks “wow this is bullshit” to herself before she goes on air. Either she’s not writing this crap and she’s parroting what CSN wants her to say, or she is writing this crap, at any rate it sucks. I don’t know if she just goes along with it because she wants to stay in the biz or if she’s really too dumb to get that it’s a crappy gig.
It’s frustrating to me on a personal level to see someone on air who has a visible paying job in sports media while I do not. It’s frustraing to me on a professional level because this is the best you can do, CSN? Seriously? Way to set the bar low. Producing this type of female television sports presence is precisely why I fled from broadcast journalism.
I’ve unfairly railed at Ms. Guiterrez and I really shouldn’t do that. Unless she really is a brainless twat. I’ll do better in the future and give her the benefit of the doubt, if just to retain some solidarity among my own kind.

My problem is that she nearly always seems unprepared for her interviews. Her questions and reports are rambling, incoherent messes that take way to long to get to the point – critical failure if you’re trying to fit your update into a 10 second break between pitches. I can forgive the content if it’s delivered professionaly, which in her case it just isn’t.
The content of the questions I could understand being CSN required, but the delivery is all hers.

They're Good Enough to Lose Painfully
Sorry this is way too long, but last night’s frustration made me think that things are different from where many of us thought we would be this year. In essence, this team is good enough for an umpire to cost us a game. When the season started, many of us suspected that this would be an awful season. Now, we see that this team with its starting and relief pitching can actually be a .500 team due to its day-in, day-out ability to keep the other team to a highly-respectable average of about 3-4 runs a game. This now presents new problems for the club, because it forces the team to consider whether a few tweaks now can make this club respectable this year, departing from the “plan” that this was a rebuilding year to see how the “kids” would do.
A team cannot be competitive when it racks up this many double plays, and leaves this many runners on base. Getting 8-11 hits and only scoring 2 runs is a recipe for a demoralized pitching staff. We’re a month into the season now, and this team can pitch with the best of them. Is it time to take a hard look at the batting order and decide if they want to support this pitching by being respectable this year, or simply toss the good work aside and continue to allow these hitters to waste baserunners? The fans would love to support a .500 team stocked with great pitching and younger players that can deliver 4-5 runs a game.
Some questions for consideration:
1. Winn doesn’t care anymore; time for Schierholtz?
2. Do pitchers already know Bowker’s holes, and should he go back to AAA to make adjustments?
3. Castillo is too inconsistent offensively and defensively; time to resume trade discussions for a 3B?
4. Durham’s trade value will never be as high as it is now, before he gets injured again, but the problem is that he is delivering some hits. Should he be dealt now and Velez given the job?
5. Ortmeier should be given more at-bats to see if he can become a consistent hitter from the right side. Do you resume the 1B platoon but with a new 1B (McClain?)
6. With Vizquel about to return, should they send down Bocock and let Burriss have the backup job this year, or go with Ochoa and send them both down?
With the addition of a run-producing bat or two, this team with its pitching and speed could be a .500 team.

I think Bowker’s starting to get a bit freaked at his lack of hitting. In his first couple of games, he was taking pitches and working into the count until he really started to rip. Now? He’s swinging at stuff that Pedro Feliz would have taken. It really does look like he’s trying way too hard to connect at the moment. I’d agree with the sentiment that pitchers have figured him out if he was striking out all the time – sadly, he’s just swinging at crap.
They need to beat him mercilessly if he swings at anything before he’s watched at least a strike.

Someone else on last night’s thread (maybe you, Buck?) made a similar comment about Winn not caring anymore, or looking like he wants out. He hasn’t had a very good month, admittedly, but where exactly is the evidence he’s not trying? Or is it just that his bonehead running/fielding mistakes are less excusable than Velez/Lewis because he’s a veteran?

Winn's Not Clicking Out There
Winn makes mistakes that an engaged veteran should not make. If he’s sleepwalking his way to $7-9 million, hitting below .250, and screwing up on the basepaths, then he needs a change of scenery, and the Giants should let a kid have that slot the rest of this season, since a really good corner outfielder would cost them an arm they should not give up.

Clearly Winn cares
He is just not getting results right now. His physical errors, and mental errors, are probably bothering him mentally and interfering with his performance, but Winn doesn’t strike me as someone who would phone it in. He is probably pressing. That being said, it would be great if the Giants could trade him for a prospect in the infield.

How boy Pop Quiz!!
1) All Winn hears probably is , " We should trade him." We say it because he is good and valuable and he is someone the Giants could move without farther crippling the franchise in the next few years. But it sucks being in that situation and it has to suck harder considering this is his home town. So all in all I won’t get my undies in a knot over it.
2) I don’t know anyone that thought Bowker would be ready to positively contribeute to the big league club before the All start game at the earliest. Job well done. I believe he was called up mainly because Nasty Nate was hurt. So If he goes back down to work regularly on his swing & first base not a bad thing at all.
3) I never knew those discussions stopped because of Joe Castle. He is like finding a small wad of $1 bills while folding laundry. Nice to find , can help you a bit but not likely to get you real far.
4b) Yes. 4a- not relevant.
5) Yes. But hell will freeze over a couple times first.
6) Now this one is not cut & dries. It really depends at what level of health Omar returns at. If he can play good defense for 5 or more games a week then Ochoa should be our guy. Or Leone with richie getign say 9 – 15 innings a week there. ( preferably in Zito games. Those are going to be Hindenburg type Disasters tell farther notice any ways. And yes I expect Zito to be brought back out of the ‘pen once this stretch of off days passes. See comments on #5 for farther clarification.

More Pop Quiz
Dave:
1. Winn hits better in warmer weather, so an argument can be made for waiting on him. But he’s making mistakes a veteran shouldn’t make, and there is nothing coming from his bat at all. At this point, unless Schierholtz is healthy, I would rather see Ortmeier get steady hacks from the right side in RF than Winn.
2. I would rather Bowker go down to AAA now to work out his holes and be ready to come back up later this year, rather than risk hurting his confidence up here.
3. I just don’t want them to think that Castillo is the answer at 3B for the rest of the season, because he isn’t.
4. Other teams will be piling up injuries and moving Durham now rather than later should be a priority.
5. Agreed; even with the power shortage on this team, McClain seems to be an afterthought.
6. Agreed regarding Ochoa and Omar, and I also would like to get a good look at Leone.

Re: 1) I am not disputing he has like a bit ragged. I am just saying he is a long ways from being a point of concern. That and to have the fans of your home town saying they would like you to move along just is not a fun spot to be in. In fact I kind of give him points for not being hostile or bitter in public.
Re:4a ) Look at the Matt Morris trade. I suppose it could happen 2 years running. If so I am definitely asking Sabean to buy me a lotto ticket. I would be much happier if he would give a "mercy killing" and end making me watch what appears to be a classy player death spiral down the drain. Recent hot streak included.
Farther thought on #5 why not take a flier on the D.F.A ed Jason Botts ? I know that’s not a great recommendation but Sabean should really be kicking the tires on almost every possible inf guy that hit’s the wires.
Re:6) I think Leone , at best, would be lesser scruffier version of F.P Santanglo. It seems every week he is playing a different position in Fresno. There is a definite use for a player like that. Especially on a team in this condition.

If a pitcher starts his wind up, then his catcher calls timeout, and he stops his windup, is that even a balk? What I mean to say is, is there a rule that says the catcher can’t call timeout once the pitcher starts his windup?
Here’s my feeling on the situation: Benjie was trying to call timeout, and Tim started his windup, then Darling granted him timeout (which he shouldn’t have done), and because there was a TO, Tim stopped. I assume he called the balk for starting and then stopping his windup (which, independent from any TO, would be a balk). But it’s the umpire’s discretion as to whether or not to grant a TO, and once the pitcher is about the throw, he shouldn’t grant the TO. Normally we see this the other way, where the batter tries to call a late TO. I also question WTF Molina was doing, because it seemed like Tim had the sign and was ready to go.
So the point is, Darling granted TO when he shouldn’t have, which caused the pitcher to stop his windup… because there was a TO, that shouldn’t be a balk, and Darling’s explanation is total crap.
