TJ surgery was about 19 months ago - September 27. 2006
Typically from the time a pitcher goes under the knife it takes a minimum of 8 months to resume baseball activities. While they can get back to the majors in just about a year, that first year is statistically a rough one. Full recovery to pre-surgical strength and success usually takes 18 to 24 months.
Burnett underwent Tommy John reconstructive surgery Tuesday after renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews found the ulnar collateral ligament in Burnett’s throwing arm fully torn. A full recovery is expected, but it’s projected to take 12-to-18 months.
Chances of a complete recovery after surgery are estimated today at 85 to 90 percent. At the time of Tommy John’s operation, Jobe put his chances at 1 in 100. After his surgery in 1974, John spent 18 months rehabilitating his arm, returned for the 1976 season, and went on to pitch in the major leagues until 1989 at age 46. Today, the procedure takes about an hour. Full rehabilitation takes about a year for pitchers and about six months for position players. Usually, pitchers who have the surgery can get their full range of motion back after about two months and can start doing weight exercises. For the next four months, they can increase the weight that they use and start doing exercises that emphasize all parts of their arm.

Assuming Misch takes Correia's spot...
...they actually wouldn’t need a 5th starter until May 12th, since they have offdays this Thursday and next Monday.

Ugh. Like sending him to the bullpen is going to work. I mean, we never boo pitchers who can’t throw strikes when they’re called from the bullpen. Yup. So no pressure there then…
I’d have been a lot more impressed if he’d agreed to go to Fresno and really work on what was wrong against hitters that weren’t guaranteed to light him up every AB. As it stands, all this means is that we stand a chance of Situation Zito at any point in a game.

They had to do something—it may be fruitless, but they just can’t keep wasting starts on the guy.

I agree – they definitely had to do something. An 0-6 start absolutely mandates doing something, especially on a team like the 2008 Giants. The problem is that we’re going to see Zito on the road, probably pitching in spots where a starter gets roughed up. And he’s going to have to come into the game and be solid from the start.
By putting in the pen, they’re basically setting him up for failure. And as loud as I’ve screamed since the start of 2007 at Zito’s meltdowns, I still like the guy and don’t wish him ill. If he found a way not to suck, that’d be just fine with me. I just don’t think he’s going to fix what’s screwing him up in the 4th inning of a close game with 5 minutes warmup…

Yeah. It’s gonna be a long road. I’d rather see him work on stuff on the side, and then try it out in low-stress, mop-up situations. He’s gonna need a lot of time to get anywhere close to straight, and the first step is to take the pressure off him. I wouldn’t bring him into any important game, but unless they find an injury for him to rehab, it’s not likely he’ll go to Fresno.

Remember, however, during Russ Ortiz’s first go around here, that he was demoted to the pen during the All Star Break, then was forced back into the rotation and pitched well after that. Who knows, at this point. I think it’s between Zito’s ears, and I’m not sure anyone knows how to fix that.

I think this is a bogus banishment to the bullpen. The Giants only need four starters right now anyway, and I bet the first time they are forced to go to five starters again they will return him to the rotation. At least he will be the one to get his starts skipped, and not someone better.

On the radio side pregame
Flem made the important observation that Zito takes FAR longer to warm up than any of the other starters (seriously, he throws up to 10x as many warm-up pitches as Timmy does before his starts). So the only scenario where a bullpen demotion works is where Barry is given plenty of advance notice to start warming up - say, an inning or so. That basically means he’s only going to be available in low-stress blowouts on either side of the ledger - which is both a good and a bad thing, I guess.

This is an important point, I think
Zito is known for throwing a ton of pitches, on throw days, warming up, even in the off-season. Is anybody else suspicious that this may be the cause of his drop in velocity? If it is, then all the working on the side, and the excessive warming up, etc. could actually be hurting him more than anything.

You guys
Zito’s not going to be in any high leverage situations. He’s not going to be put into any situations that could hurt the Giants and he’s not going to be put into any situations where he can get the loss.
At least, not unless there’s anyone else available.

No, he'll be in mop-up, of course.
But that’s not that I was saying. What I was saying is, I think he needs to stop throwing so much - or maybe at all - for awhile. His arm may just be pitched out and there’s nothing that can be done, but maybe a sabbatical would do his arm good (maybe his head as well). Of course, I’m not foolish enough to think this has a chance in hell of actually happening, just musing is all.

If he is throwing too much prior to the game and he is 0-6 and 11-19 with the team, maybe he should go out there a little colder than he likes but he would be more fresh. Can’t hurt to try.

Also, why is this a surprise
We all knew that something had to be done. It was so incredibly obvious. Not only that but, and I know I’ve said this many times, they could not let him keep losing. They had to get him out of the rotation. There were two ways: DL and bullpen. They chose bullpen.
I don’t see how this makes Bochy suddenly competant.

Last week
Last week I began thinking about the possibility of moving Barry Zito to the bullpen to take advantage of the Giants’ two days off on May 1st and 4th. Last season Barry benefited from a quick tour in the bullpen, as had Matt Cain the previous season.
The injury to Kevin Correia got me to applying the same advantage to the Giants’ not needing him until May 10th, or precisely two weeks after his injury Saturday night. Then I thought that if the Giants were to put Kevin on the DL, they could recall Pat Misch, who was scheduled to start for Fresno yesterday.
The Giants did so, of course, and had Patrick relieve Barry after yet another disappointing start. Replacing Barry in the rotation with Misch temporarily set up the ability to give Barry a bullpen break while also not missing Kevin.
Let’s hope this tour in the bullpen has a similar effect on Barry to its very positive effect last season.

Remember Cain...
Two seasons ago, Matt Cain was struggling and was sent to the bullpen to fix himself and it worked. I know Zito is a different beast, but we have to at least hold some hope this will work…

I listened to that game on the radio.
It was off of “Big Daddy” Reuschel. I also saw a video of him hitting an opposite field HR in high school. He batted lefty, holding the bat with his left (good) hand, and resting the knob of the bat on the nub of his right hand until the point of impact, when he’d following through one-handed like a lot of lefties (Will Clark for example).
And for the record, Abbott did play in the NL, in 1999, with Milwaukee. He went 2 for 21, managed 3 RBI’s and struck out in less than half of his AB’s—not all that shabby for a pitcher.

putting him in the bullpen
won’t help him get his velocity or control back. he’s done.
Ok maybe he can find something in his mechanics that is causing the dip in velocity and/or trouble locating. but I’m not holding out much hope.
OTOH he ALWAYS has been shitty in April. This is a legendary amount of suck, but perhaps he can return to his regular normal level of suck once we hit may.
