Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

What the monied class is saying

No time for a front-page post today, so I present the prose stylings of Biff Pocoroba. Actually he doesn't write that much. He's even less interesting in person, too.  Still, we can turn this into an open  OMG-the-Giants-are-as-good-without-Bonds-see-see-see thread.

When I want an in-depth analysis of the San Francisco Giants, I, like you, go to The Wall Street Journal and their "All The Sabermetrics That's Fit To Print".  Well the Journal doesn't disappoint on Monday morning with their front-page story on the Gigantes.  That's right.  This story on how the Giants have fared without the likes of Bonds appears on the front page:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120933917167348283.html?mod=hpp_us_pageone

Curiously, there's about as much on the state of local kayaking as there is baseball in the article, but the chance to see a pointillized Barry Lamar and his mid-90's porn stache is worth clicking to see.

Rubber Chickens

I wonder if that vendor keeps track of his rubber chicken sales on his rubber chicken graph (all those old or curious enough to listen to Steve Martin’s ‘Wild and Crazy Guy’ album will get this reference…which is no longer funny now that I have had to explain it. Damn, I should have just let it sit there and allow it to make people laugh or scratch their heads. This is all Zito’s fault.)

Midly interesting :-) Pretty much a fluff piece on a slow economic news day.

I may be an old codger, but the one thing I did find refreshing about the article was the respect showed to the players. “Mr. Bonds” and “Mr. Mays” was a nice change from the ESPN type reporting in which the sportswriter refers to the athletes as if they are personal friends.

Thanks, Rupert Murdoch, for the superb journalism

Here’s what I learned from this article:
-Sales of rubber chickens are down.
-Rentals of kayaks are down.
—There are fewer media credentials requested.

I was kind of hoping they’d find a way to blame the subprime mortgage crisis on Barry’s absence as well.

Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.

Wow, Biff. You’re famous.

Still watching out for Notgardo in Fresno. Hope you make it back up soon. We miss you 'round The City way. How come you never call?

Famous

I’ll take ‘famous but not interesting’ over ‘darling of Giants geekdom and last in our fantasy league’ like Grant is. Nice pick with Troy Glaus.

sound about right

15% decline in attendance? i’d say 15% of giants fans aren’t real fans anyway. be gone!

"They can trade me," Bonds said. "I don't think they will, though. It's not like I want to be traded, man. I'm a Giant. I'm stuck here till the end."

I just don't get this point of view

If only the “true” fans came out to Giants games, the team would have like $15 and a pound of butter.

Teams actually NEED fairweather fans to come to the yard (you hear that, Fairweather Fan?!?). A true fan of the team should welcome fairweathers because without them, the true fans are going to be forced to root for crap every single year of their true fan lives. As opposed to rooting for crap for a limited time only (we hope…).

It’s the weirdest form of elitism… although it’s probably actually about par as elitism goes.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

nah, we true fans are just poor and jelous we can’t afford a skybox so we cloak ourselves in our “true fandom”.

Now I’m going to cry.

Ahhhh…here we go…yet another “real fans” debate.

I suppose “real fans” don’t boo the home team when they deserve it?
“Real Fans” sit through a 5 hour rain delay, just so they can catch a waterlogged case of pneumonia?
Do “real fans” miss a half inning while waiting for some brews or to take a leak?!?

I guess what I’m getting at is that this whole “real fans” thing is getting tiring and monotonous. Kinda like all the “gamer” ads we’ve been subjected to. With exception of the one with Matty Cain backing off the dude that’s chatting up the cutie on the bench.

Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.

I love that commercial. The look of surprise fading to expectation on the girls face cracks me up every time.

I did that once!
