Disabled List?

Rotoworld thinks Zito might be headed for the disabled list, how about the just plain unable list. I'm pretty sure I'm unable to watch him anymore. Every fifth day, all the enthusiasm and good feelings I've built up about this year's team promptly gets fired into the shitter. And for all the Zito apologists, start your own post to defend him, I don't want to hear about how not being able to surf is hurting him spiritually. For 126 million, I'd leave my wife and kids on Christmas eve and do it with a smile on my face. I'm expected to do my job regularly, well and in the face of alot of public criticism and second guessing. And for a whole hell of a lot less than Barry is making. Suck it up you hippie shit bag!

options for the zito "situation"

1. put him on the DL.
result: wasted time as we hope he’ll revive his career with some time off.

2. let him pitch the rest of the year in the rotation.
result: zito loses at least 20 games, possibly sets a record for losses in a season.

3. put him in the pen
result: zito finishes the year with something like 25 games pitched total (6 started), a 7.00 ERA with a W-L record of 0-9

4. cut him now.
result: the giants bite eat his contract but zito stops hurting the team.

I’m for #4.

#3

Put him in the pen as the long reliever. Hopefully he can come to terms with his “stuff” and improve. Over $100M is too much money to eat.

i suggested this yesterday...

skip his start and align him toward the back end of the opponents’ rotation.
Zito vs. Volquez/Webb/Peavy/etc. is practically a guaranteed loss. Zito vs. Matt Belisle…well, still a longshot, but I’ll take relying on a lot of what if’s and lucky breaks over relying on Zito to be perfect, just to keep the team CLOSE.

I would say #3, but I hate seeing him every fifth day. I can’t imagine my reaction when Cain/Lincecum comes out in the 5th inning of a 1-0 game due to pitch count, and Bochy calls for the Albatross.

Long relief may as well be Fresno. Aside from Zito’s starts and a couple hiccups from other starters, I’m pleasantly surprised just how often this squad has fought and scratched to keep games close.

Maybe not spiritually, but physically. If all that paddling around in the offseason helped the dude chuck his fastball around 90 in the past, let him fuckin’ surf! How much worse can it get? And if he surfs and still sucks at least we can hope he gets eaten by a shark.

Absolutely. Seriously, let the guy surf.

I want Zito to pitch against the Webbs and Peavys of the world. If you start matching him up against guys we should beat, we might never win a game. Obviously the best thing the Giants can do is remove him from the rotation, but I doubt they have the guts to do that.

shows how much I know. Supposedly Bochy spoke to Zito about skipping his next start or moving him into the bullpen after the game today. I guess they do have some guts.

at the sake of invoking "intangibles" into the discussion

I’d like to think that scratching out any win against the Webbs/Peavys of the league would be an invaluable confidence boost to the club, whether by lucky bounce or a mix of cagey-veteran-savvyness/youthful energy.
The only way this team can even dream about beating pitchers of that caliber is if the pitching effort is matched on the Giants’ side as well.

3-4 Innings of Zito against Cy Young contenders = a 5+ run deficit that this offense won’t be able to overcome.
3-4 innings of Zito against dumpster dives= a 5+ run deficit that this offense MIGHT overcome.

I bring up intangibles because seeing this team actually FIGHT, even in losses, is providing some semblance of hope for the future of this franchise.
Seeing the collective psyche of this team down by 8 runs after 3 innings reminds me of the nauseating performances of Week One.

I vote for the DL

Let him take some time off, relax, heal his broken pitching muscle, and come back and run off 18 wins in a row. I would also like another shot of whatever this is I’m drinking.

by tyrannoman on Apr 28, 2008 7:22 AM PDT reply actions

It's not that his pitching muscle is broken that's the real problem

I mean, don’t get me wrong, the pitching muscle is broken… it’s just the bigger problem is actually the massive size of his suck muscle. Somehow we have to get that sucker to atrophy, because otherwise I fear there is no hope. Not even in some kind of Luke Skywalkery way.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Apr 28, 2008 8:29 AM PDT up reply actions

So, then

the suck muscle and the pitching muscle are inversly proportional? Timmy’s suck muscle must be tiny.

by tyrannoman on Apr 28, 2008 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions

They are inverseley proportional

But the key is that it’s not a direct relationship. Eliminating his suck muscle will improve the condition of his pitching muscle, but it leaves no guarantee that the pitching muscle itself will be strong. Only stronger. The suck to pitching muscle inverse ratio relies on a number of complicated factor independent to pitcher AND year.

So even with a complete “suck muscle ectomy,” Zito’s pitching muscle might never be any better than 4th starter quality ever again. And if that were the case, he’d have to work the CRAP out of his luck muscle.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

by howtheyscored on Apr 28, 2008 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

ahhh

my grasp on basic anatomy is improving by the post. Perhaps it was the surfing that kept the suck muscle hidden away were it could do no damage, but without the surfing the muscle has exploded into taking over the entire body.

maybe we’ve run out of things to say. We all know he won’t be DFA’d, so that means:

A) he stays in the rotation

B) he moves to the ‘pen

C) he has a mystery injury and heads to the DL.

No matter how mad we all are, there are only so many ways to state that he sucks way more than anyone else on the team, including Ray Ray.

by tyrannoman on Apr 28, 2008 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

There's gotta be no way

There’s no way the Giants organization lets their 126 million dollar baby lose 20 games. This means that something is almost certainly going to happen to get him out of the rotation. DL. bullpen or Fresno (which would mean release), whichever one it is it’s probably going to happen sooner rather than later.

Losing twenty games would just put exclamation points, underlining, bells, whistles, neon and whipped cream on the fact that the Zito contract was horrible. There’s no way they let that happen.

Only 946 games until the end of Zito's contract

by thehavenot on Apr 28, 2008 11:49 AM PDT reply actions

That may be true, but you do have to give the Giants’ credit for at least talking about demoting himto the ‘pen, right? They are already admitting this is a massive mistake, and are trying to find a way to help Zito out. At this point, most of this has to be in his head. I think two weeks away, followed by a couple of rehab starts in Freson, or Norwich would be best for all concerned. The only problem is finding a fifth starter no that Correria is out at least a month.

Hennessey?

Zito to work things out in bullpen

The Giants sent struggling Opening Day starter Monday,Barry Zito to the bullpen one day after his record fell to a Major League-worst 0-6.

Manager Bruce Bochy didn’t offer a timetable for Zito’s possible return to the starting rotation.

"We’ll watch and see how things go," Bochy said. "Right now, we’re going to leave it at that, that he’s going to be helping us in the bullpen."

But when Bochy was asked whether Zito would miss only one turn through the rotation, he said, "Sure, that’s my hope."
