What do we do with Sanchez?

So to this point in the season, our pitching has been pretty much as impressive as we'd been hoping for it to be.  Lincecum's showing Cy Young form, Cain has been good minus one bad start, Correia is doing decently, Valdez has been shining in his relief role, and Wilson has for the most part been a shut-down closer. And Sanchez is doing excellent.  He is technically  in a tie with Timmy for 1st in the majors in strikeouts (Aaron Harang is actually first, but he has an extra start because he's the Reds #1 starter.)  He's set his career high for strikeouts twice so far this season with two outings where he racked up 10 K's a piece.  And both of those outings he's held the other team to one run or less.

So what should we do with him?  We can trade him for a decent haul of prospects to a team that really needs a starter, like maybe the Yankees or the Angels or somebody.  Or we can hold on to him and keep him in our rotation, which aside from Barry Zito has the potential to be pretty badass.  What would be better for us, trading him or keeping him?  Would it be worth getting some position prospects to add to our lineup eventually, or would it be smarter for us to keep him and wait for some of the prospects we already have to develop an make our offense good enough to contend?

I don't think moving Sanchez is wise

but Lowry and maybe a reliever would be a great choice. That is providing the Noah comes back and pitches as well as he did last year. We could then package him with Chulk for some prospects.

I am very happy with the way our team has exceeded expectations so far, and it is clearly the pitching staff that is the primary reason for this. Sanchez has been a huge part of that, and at this point we are seeing that he has great upside. We are 2-3 bats away from post season contention, and once in the post season it has been shown that having 2-3 dominant starters is the key to winning. Look at the Marlins, White Sox, Red Sox and Tigers as recent examples.

Keep Him

It’s one thing when an old veteran shows something, it makes you think you should unload him while the price is high, but this kid looks like a star in the making. Are you going to trade him and have him haunt you for the next decade?? The only way I trade him is if they start getting offers for him like they got for Lincecum this past offseason.

Sell. High. Now.

I’m an avid reader of McC but I get the general sense that when someone is doing well, we like to hold the player. It’s not wrong to think that way. You get a sense of “He’s mine. No one else can touch him. Let’s ride this out.” But when player X is doing poorly, out come the pitchforks. Sanchez is a rollercoaster of pitching. When he’s on, he’s on but who knows when that will be? I’m not saying we’re gonna be playoff contenders this year but hey, our pitching is pretty darn good as it is. We’re OBVIOUSLY lacking a big bat so why can’t we just make a big sacrifice and sell Sanchez while he’s hot? With an extra bat and the way the NL West is stacking up so far, we might scratch the surface of the playoffs (big maybe). If not the playoffs, then we can at least have another bat for another couple of years to help with the rebuilding process. Love ya Sanchez but if I’m the man upstairs, you’re packin’ your bags.

Well all fan boards do that. In reality, all players will get traded for the right price, and I’ve come to believe that “untouchable” means “We would never realistically get offered what it would take for me to accept.”

But even further… fans have more investment in their own guys than other teams do. We look at having ridden the rough spots as paid-in-capital while other teams look at it as historical downside . I also think that we project long term upside from a few games while we see the same thing from other team’s players as “small sample size.”

IMO, it’d sort of depend on what happens with Lowry and how much higher Sanchez’s value could get. I’d much rather deal Lowry because I don’t have much faith in his abilities anymore.

Would Anaheim part with Brandon Wood? Seems like he sort of needs a change of scenery.

This is nitpicky and annoying, but Harang has 1 more strikeout than Lincecum and Sanchez. Yeah, he has one more start, but it’s just not accurate to say they’re leading the league in strikeouts. If you want to show how awesome they are, just use K/9. Sanchez is first in MLB at 11.57 and Lincecum is 2nd at 11.05. That is awesome. No one else is in double digits and Harang is down at 16th with 7.87 K/9.

Not only does Sanchez have a better K/9, he beat Harang last night head to head. Not only that, but Harang gets to pitch against the Giants’ offense and Sanchez doesn’t. Big asterisk to Harang and his league leading K total.

Stupid me, I was looking at the stats from mlb.com and you “must have a minimum of 1.0 inning pitched per team game”. Smoltz has pitched 23, the Braves have played 24. But you’re right, he’s leading the way at 12.13 or so. Not bad for an old geezer.

Jonathan Sanchez

SF would not be “selling him high” if the Giants were to trade Sanchez now. Let him grow. There will be some growing pains. Let him blossom. He will blossom into a top of the rotation starter that will give his team a chance for victory. Sanchez is finally where he belongs. Just ask him. As he always envisioned himself. A starting pitcher.

by wilriv21 on Apr 26, 2008 3:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Do not trade Jonathan Sanchez

Having three outstanding starters in your rotation ‘tis a thing devoutly to be wished. The kind of hitter I’d want in return just isn’t going to be traded away by another team, so I say we keep Sanchez and acquire hitters another way. Say, like, drafting them.

by Moggeee on Apr 26, 2008 10:02 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to admit that it looks like I was completely wrong about Sanchez. I always kind of saw him as a “great arm” who would never put it all together. He had command problems and lacked a breaking ball.

Now, he’s not even using his change up, and he’s still dominating with a fastball and breaking ball. It’s been fun to watch.

by Dan from NM on Apr 26, 2008 4:12 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Thought Jonathan had a three pitch repertoire – FB, change and slider – apparently he has a fourth pitch. After the game last night he mentioned that his sinkerball was really working well.

by wilriv21 on Apr 26, 2008 4:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Trading Sanchez

Last night he was averaging around 92 on his fastball with a high of 96 and a low of 89. You just don’t see many lefties with that type of velocity. When he has his curve or slider working he’s a pretty tough at-bat. That being said, he does not have excellent command yet and he is more of a thrower than a pitcher at this point. I would only trade him if we got an over-whelming offer like Kotchman and Wood for him, which won’t happen. Drive a hard bargain for him, otherwise keep him and hope he improves his command, and he probably will being that he’s 25 and this is really his first full year in the bigs. Why Sabean jerked this guy from starting to relieving and moved him all over the organization in 2006 and 2007 is beyond me. A guy with his stuff should be given every chance to start first, and if he fails at that then you move him to the pen. Another concern is that guys who have a hard time with their mechanics like Sanchez are more prone to injury, especially guys who throw that hard.

by mark30perq3 on Apr 26, 2008 4:41 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

J. Sanchez

I said it last year and I’ll say it again, we need to keep this kid. He has a special arm and is making some serious strides early in his career. Besides, trading him now would be pointless because there is no way he has reached his potential yet. As someone stated above, I think we should keep Sanchez and move Lowry. Someone will be willing to take a reclamation project on him.

Lincecum/Cain/Sanchez/Correia/Zito will be solid for years and our bullpen is starting to shape up. We just need those two big bats and we will be right back where we belong…

I think I pulled my swagger muscle...

I'm with keeping Sanchez.

From my understanding, Sanchez has always been this good—he simply needed a chance to display it. Last year, he was thrown into too many different roles and was not given an opportunity to show what he could do. Now he has shown what he is capable of, and if he remains as a starting pitcher, then he should remain a Giant.

by withclubsauce on Apr 26, 2008 6:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

We badly need to keep all of Cain/Lincecum/Sanchez (and hope they stay healthy and aweseom) becuase we have to counter balance the Zito contract.

Giants starters are pretty good, but not that deep – we may have already lost Correria for a while.

We trade can probably trade Sanchez for (a) AAA/Rookie hitting prospect – assuming he plays 3b/1b/ss he will slot right in. But then we have to replace Sanchez in the rotation… so it kind of washes. We might be able to get a few A/AA guys for him… but then the certainty is lower.

Obviously, if the deal is right (2-3 uberprospects) you take it.

We Need to Keep as Many Legit Major League Players as Possible

What this team needs is Major League Ballplayers. 25 of them. We have about 5 legit pros right now and potentially four to six more. You dump great talent when you have too much of it.

BTW – If Sanchez pitches like he did last night consistently we should trade Lowry and his ML leading walks and declining peripherals (and injuries) instead of Sanchez.

I don't know.

Either way, we can probably get more at the trade deadline, assuming Sanchez keeps pitching well. By then, Lowry and Correia should both be in/ready to slide into the rotation. If this team is to contend next year (unlikely), all three will have to pitch well, and two of them would probably have to be dealt for decent value.
Everybody would prefer to trade Lowry, but that isn’t going to happen unless he has a strong second half and Sabean is willing to deal him. Lastings Milledge was probably the last good offer we’ll see for him.

I follow the Mets very closely

I’ve never seen a Milledge for Lowry offer, on any of the Mets blogs like Metsblog, Metsgeek. The only place I’ve seen a Milledge for Lowry offer is on McC.

The Milledge trade rumour that has been often bandied around was Blanton for Milledge, which Beane wanted, and Milledge for Haren, which Minaya wanted.

For some reason, the original Newsday article is gone from the interwebs, but the MetsBlog link is here.

In Newsday, David Lennon reveals that the Mets talked to the Giants last month about acquiring LHP Noah Lowry, according to a ‘person familiar with the situation.’

However, according to Lennon, the Giants asked for OF Lastings Milledge plus ‘another young pitcher’ in the deal, but when discussions cooled, ‘the Mets shipped Milledge to the Nationals instead.’

by Grant on Apr 27, 2008 1:40 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sanchez is just scratching his potential

His value to us as a starting pitcher for the next 5 years is much more than his value as a trade chip. I’m a bit biased because I’ve probably been his biggest booster here going all the way back to Augusta, but to me this guy is a co-ace in the making and we have nothing like him in Fresno to replace him. If Correia’s gone for the same amount of time Lowry was when he strained his oblique, I think you’ll see how big a hit the pitching staff as a whole will take because of it. Trading away Sanchez is as unthinkable to me right now as trading away Timmy.

My boy ain't fat, he's just big boned. Big bat, too.

by Roger on Apr 27, 2008 8:11 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Even if Correia didn’t get injured, I’d say keep for now. Our starting pitching has been pretty solid, particularly the three in the middle. What’s crazy is, I’ve never been fond of Sanchez as a starter, I thought he seemed better suited for bullpen work. The the Good Lord in Heaven above, he’s proving me wrong! So if you’re going to sell him, it would definitely have to be for an overwhelming offer. It would definitely have to be a sell very high scenario, otherwise it’s just not worth it.

I don’t think there’s any reason to trade him just because we have three good starting pitchers and need some hitters. I mean, if we get good value for him, then fine, but I don’t think that, at this stage, we need to worry about balancing out the team’s talent. We just need talent—period.

by Dan from NM on Apr 27, 2008 11:20 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

You all missed the most important reason to keep him.

When else are we going to have a guy on the team who we can nickname “Dirty Sanchez”

I don’t know if anyone still does it but last year on the gameday threads people actually looked up pictures of opposing batters and put poop moustaches on them in paint whenever Sanchez struck them out.

That is TOO priceless to pass up.
