Kenji Johjima Signs Extension

Kenji Johjima Signs Extension.  3yr./16.5M according to Ken Rosenthal.  I didn't see this comming.  Makes you wonder what the Mariners plan to do with Clement.  DH? 1B? Trade?  Any ways this leaves the 2009 free agent catcher pool looking like this:

Rod Barajas
Michael Barrett
Johnny Estrada
Jason Kendall - club option for '09; vests with 110 games played in '08
Paul Lo Duca
Miguel Olivo - $2.7MM club option for '09 with a $0.1MM buyout
Ivan Rodriguez
David Ross
Jason Varitek
Gregg Zaun - $3.75MM vesting option for '09; vests with 160 games played in '08

That's a pretty weak list of old catchers. I think this bodes well for the Giants if they want to trade Molina at a high value this season or this winter. If they could move Molina for something good I'd like to see them target either catcher Jeff Mathis, Angels, Bryan Anderson, Cardinals or Taylor Teagarden , Rangers. These players are expendable to their teams because they have better catchers already and good catcher prospects in the minors. Each of these guys are great defensively behind the plate and would be ML ready in 2009. Plus they're young.

Meh

I don’t mind Bengie. As much as I’d like my boy STEVE HOLM! to get a chance at the starting job, Bengie’s hit pretty decently for us and isn’t too expensive.

Proud pappa of....STEVE HOLM!!

But Molina is slow as hell and won’t be a part of the next winning Giants team. Moving Molina is about rebuilding. His value is at a high and it’s the best time to trade him.

right, the catcher of the next giants team that wins will be Pablo Sandoval. And Bengie Molina will be his tutor at the big league level.

Yes, I have converted to the church of Pablo.

I had listened to a radio interview of Fred Stanley on the SJGiants site. He mentioned how Sandoval was repeating SJ to work with Decker on his catching and that Pablo would catch 100 games this season. But so far he has only caught 10 games out of the 22 SJ has played in. 10 at catcher, 6 at 1B and on game at DH. So if this trend continues Pablo will play in 108 games this season for SJ with only 64 behind the plate.

From what I’ve heard he has a good arm and throws out around 50% of baserunners but it’s his blocking and agility behind the plate that needs improving.

At 5’11” 245 pounds he could be a Prince type 1B if he can continue to swing the bat the way he has in more difficult hitters leagues.

Michael Barrett had some good things to say about SF in the Chronicle.

Apparently he didn’t know our history with AJ Pussyski.

In the meantime, I’ll be waiting for Pablo.

So..

We’re going to trade our catcher, to a team who have better catchers already and good catcher prospects in the minors, for a catching prospect?

I don't think the Rangers...

Will trade a young catcher for an old catcher especially considering they already have more catcher than they know what to do with what with, The Saltalamaniac, Laird, and Ramirez. Nor do I think that the Birds will want Bengie considering they have his younger and better brother. I would like to see them pull off a deal with a team like Cleavland (who would probably then move Martinez to first) and nab some of their blocked position player talent.

I wasn’t suggesting trading Bengie for a catcher. Trade Molina for something good. Then trade something for a young blocked catcher.

The Cardinals

are pretty high on Anderson. Despite having Yadier at catcher, I think they’re looking forward to Anderson becoming their regular catcher.

Yep. I didn’t realize that awful contract was almost over. So naturally the Giants will blow a crapton of money on him in 2009!

Terms are the original deal

He probably will make more with the new deal.

Talking about SF catchers, Saturday is a night game and Sunday a day game, possibly SF should try Steve Holm catching Barry Zito on Sunday and give BMoney a day off. Give it a shot. What we got to lose?

Maybe I wasn't clear

“If they could move Molina for something good…” Trade Molina for something.

”...I’d like to see them target either catcher Jeff Mathis, Angels, Bryan Anderson, Cardinals or Taylor Teagarden , Rangers.” Trade something else for a young catcher.

by Cainer on Apr 25, 2008 2:38 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

1) I can’t see any upside from any of those FA catchers.
2) I don’t really know what we would have to offer that would be a fair exchange for a young and decent catcher.

Crap!

by tyrannoman on Apr 25, 2008 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha

Yeah, single-A to the majors is the way to go. But seriously, Pablo should probably be in AA by the end of the year and then start next year in AAA, then maybe a mid or late season call-up in ‘09? I guess it depends on his defense, but the hitting is drool-worthy.

Adopted Giant: Travis Denker. Good?

how about he stays in San Jose, then jumps to Fresno to avoid the black hole of Dodd? I know it may rush him, but I’m beginning to think that stadium crushes the hopes and dreams of every Non-Bowker.

by tyrannoman on Apr 25, 2008 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m okay with this when I don’t really think the prospect has much of a chance to be a big league regula, not so much with young Pablo there.

you can't block the Bocock

by oldjacket on Apr 25, 2008 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think if we called him up before late 2009, it would be kind of rushing him. But you never know. If Pablito keeps mashing in San Jose maybe he gets promoted soon. If he excels in Connecticut towards the end of the year, maybe he gets to start ‘09 in Fresno and finish the season with the big club.

Or maybe he gets called up tomorrow. This is Brian Sabean we’re talking about.

Here's a pipe dream:

Molina + Threets/Merkin to Rangers for Saltalamacchia?

Tentatively adopting Dan Ortmeier. And Boom Goes the Dynamite.

by Andy from DC on Apr 25, 2008 3:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I doubt the Rangers would do that because they’re in rebuilding mode right now and wouldn’t have much use for Molina. They’d also want a starting pitcher over a bullpen arm, I think. Probably have to give up Sanchez for Salty.

Adopted Giant: Travis Denker. Good?

by scotterduder on Apr 25, 2008 3:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pipe dream is right. :(

Salty was the centerpiece of the Tex trade, I doubt they’d turn around and give him up for Bengie Molina and a reliever.

Texas ic catching country

The Rangers have Laird, Salty, Teagarden and Ramirez as catching prospects. Texas does not need a catcher.

Before shipping BMoney to Siberia please read this quote from none other than one Mr Matthew Thomas Cain:

Hoffman was trying to preserve Maddux’s 350th career win and extend his saves record to 529 when Molina hit his fourth homer to break a tie with John Bowker for the team lead.

“There’s nothing better than that,” Cain said. “That was a huge pick-me-up. It picked up the whole team the way he battled that whole at-bat and hit the home run. It’s pretty awesome for him to have that. It couldn’t happen to a better guy.”

by wilriv21 on Apr 25, 2008 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if he's a nice guy then that's different.

I’ll bet that if Bengie Molina caught Matt Herges when he was the closer, he wouldn’t have blown a single save.

exactly

other teams GM’s arent going to give you full value – they only see a ~34 year old who’s slower than…...who in the hell wants to gut the heart of the team for some marginal prospect? i wasnt sure
about signing him but he’s just a damn winner…he won a ton of games last year with his clutch hitting
and he’s doing it again….ill take a few more like Molina on the team…

After Lowry

comes back, I might just pull the trigger on the Sanchez for Salty deal. Both teams get something they need, and Salty can study under Molina.

by tyrannoman on Apr 25, 2008 3:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

how about Lowry goes instead?

Don't forget about Witter

In AA now. Could be in AAA by the end of the season. Not great defensively, but slugging like crazy in Connecticut. Probably will be worth a September call up and an extended look next ST at least. Hows that for your “young” guy to be mentored by Bengie?
