Mmm... Food

Hey all, going to my first game this season on Sunday.  I know the park has some good food, but what would you guys recommend.  I usually just get the garlic fries and a hot dog but I want to explore some different options.  I've tried the Sheboygan before, but what else is there at the park.  I think I'll try the Cha Cha bowl this Sunday unless there is a more tasty suggestion.

PS Maybe there should be a section for food reviews? I don't know, there isn't really any place for sections here but maybe you all know something I don't.

The BBQ stand under the CF Scoreboard is A+++.

I usually just get a Sheboygan though.

I heard that beer was the best thing you could drink after a serious workout. I don’t remember where I heard that. In fact, I could have just made it up to justify my post gym beer binging. I call it my post-gymbeerey.

I usually stick with the classic brat and/or garlic fries or bring my own food. I too would be interested in knowing what other good options are out there. I’ve heard good things about the Cha Cha bowl but was never sure where they sold it. I’m going to the game on Friday, so any suggestions will be fresh in my head.

I like the Kielbasa’s right at the top of the stairs by the Juan Marichal entrance (right field). They’re huge so I don’t feel so ripped off after buying one…unlike my buddy who bought a Giants Dog about 5 minutes later…

I’ll also second the recommendation on the Cha-Cha bowls. Tasty, and like the Kielbasas, they’re filling enough that you don’t feel ripped off after eating one.

Garlic fries are a must, of course. So is stopping by the Safeway at 4th and Townsend to pick up a giant bag of peanuts to bring in.

I don’t know about this season, but toward the end of last season I found that on the upper deck by that entrance (just keep going up the stairs after you walk in), there is an Irish pub, where you can get OK fish ‘n chips…but more importantly, Guinness there was cheaper than the premium beers downstairs (IIRC…$7.75 for budweiser, $9 for anchor or whatever, but only $8.50 for guinness!).

Oh…and, uh…it’s really hard ;-) to sneak cans of beer in by covering them with a sweater in your bag. It most definitely is not helpful to hide your empty cans from the usher after pouring them into a plastic cup.

$5.99 12 packs of PBR at the safeway up the street…can’t beat that deal!

Actually, I made a point to mention the cans because last game I tried to sneak bottles in, but they kept rattling about in my bag. The 12er keeps everything compact and ambiguous feeling to the security guards’ hands.

True, uncool story

A couple years ago, by brothers and I were frontloading in the parking lot, and stashed some bottles in our bag under sweatshirts and whatnots… As we’re walking to the ballpark, some guy sees our Dodgers Suck t-shirts and starts screaming, “YEAH!!! FUDGE THE DODGERS!!! DODGERS SUCK!!! I HATE THE DODGERS!!!!” all the way to the ballpark. We go to Second and King, the girl looks at us with this cancer by our side, and immediately checks our bag. But not even the typical “pat the bottom, glance in the top, okay you’re in” check, she dug in and found the bottles under the sweatshirt. So we had to pound some Newcastles right in front of the gate, which made me feel pretty shady at best, and I was pissed that this ass made us get checked.

The Cha Cha Bowl is my undisputed favorite thing to eat at the ballpark. Also, more healthy than most ballpark fare with the lean chicken breast and black beans, and really satisfying. They also have aguas frescas at Orlando’s BBQ where they serve the bowls. Sometimes it’s horchata, sometimes it’s fruit drinks. It’s all awesome.

My first game of the year is Saturday and I will have the inaugural Cha Cha Bowl of 2008 then.

Skip the usual

Get a plate of Irish Nachos, available at the Murph’s Pub. There a few of them in the ball park.

I also like the fried bread. The stand is under the bleachers across the barbecue place.

As mentioned above, the Irish Nachos are great.

Another option:

If you have time before or after the game, head to 21st Amendment on 2nd St., a few blocks from the park - they do a really, really good burger, and the beer is super-tasty. Or go to Primo Patio on Townsend near 4th St. - superwonderful Jerk Chicken sandwich. Those are my two favorite eateries near the park. Oh, and of course Zeke’s at the corner of 3rd and Brannan, where all the cool McCoven meet.

Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.

Been on a few dates there, casual dinners before the game, etc. Great food. Pomegranate cider, A+. Other cocktails, A+. Beer? Probably good, but I don’t drink it so I wouldn’t know.

You won’t go wrong by getting yourself a Louisiana Hot Link at the Say Hey Sausage Specialities, found all over the ballpark. Big fan of the fish n’ chips at Murph’s Irish Pub. Might not be the best you’ve ever had, but it’s very tasty all the same. There’s some good stuff in the Field Club Lounge, but for most of us, it’s standard ballpark fare or nothing. Avoid the sushi, I think it’s bought wholesale from the guy who fishes on the third street bridge… =)

Question: Where does one buy the sheboygen?

Suggestion: The chili breadbowl that they sell from the “bar” behind 3rd base on the main concourse is pretty good and a lot of food for the money

Fact to make you all envious: Mrs. Goofus makes a damn good replica of the cha cha bowl and we have it regularly.

Getting the right mix of spices for the chicken was the thing that stopped me from trying to replicate the recipe. Plus I’d take out much of the pineapple in the salsa. I really dislike pineapple and I just end up picking out the zucchini to eat.

I beg to differ. It’s one of the few fruits I won’t touch with a ten foot pole. Maybe the only one. It tastes weird, smells weird, and the acidity in the flesh and juice is far too much for me. Which is saying a lot because I adore citrus, vinegar, and other extremely sour/acidic foods.

Pineapple as food severely bothers me. As objects however, I find them hilarious. I have clothing items with pineapples on them, pineapple jewelry, etc. Just keep the fruit itself away from me.

The Sheboygan is all over the park. Look for the small Doggie Diner stands (not the ones that have a counter and like a backroom or whatever. I think there are two or three on the field level and two or three up in the view level.

There’s a Sheboygan stand right near the little kids’ baseball diamond by the LF bleachers. That one gets kind of crowded, though. The ones in the upper deck, outside Sec. 317 or thereabouts, are usually less busy.
