Rajai Davis to Athletics
Rajai for Dan Johnson two weeks ago? Made too much sense. Sabean's not nearly the genius his trade a couple years back with the Twins and his failure to develop any hitting talent to would have you believe.
From the Chron, re: Rajai:
"He plays left, center and right," A's manager Bob Geren said. "He's a good runner. Having a speed guy is something that's a nice addition."
Fun fact : Rajai's from Norwich CT, home of the MIGHTY NORWICH DEFENDIGATORS.
Anyway, the deets:

Oddly enough...
Johnson got DFA’d by the Rays on Wednesday.

Giants claim Johnson and then Sabean and Beane swing a deal to send Davis to Fresno and Johnson to Sacramento

that's not gonna happen
But at least it’s creative. I don’t think the Ginats and A’s cooperate that well, unfortunately.

Sabes will probably trade EME and Pablo Sandoval for Saarloos

I'm not surprised he's gone
But it is a bit of a shock that no one in the NL wanted him.

I’d rather have Bowker at first base than Dan Johnson. You want to knock Sabean, there’s so many other legit things you can knock him for. Failing to acquire Dan Johnson is not one of them.

how could he have known that Bowker would emerge? the Davis-Johnson deal should have gone down before either was DFAed, or after the first one was.
but now i agree, i rather sort through the players we have than do the 4 first baseman thing again (Aurilia, Klesko, Sweeney, Niekro to start 07).

but the reason Davis was DFA’d was because of the emergence of Bowker, right? Without Bowker being called up and playing well, Davis would still be a Giant

Still Room
IMO, it still makes sense to take a flier on Johnson if he ends up falling to us.
The Giants should cut Richie Aurilia ( I love the guy but unfortunately he’s been done since last year, how he’s been getting more at bats than Ortmeier is beyond me) and claim Johnson or they could send down one of Burriss or Bocock.
It does no harm to try out Johnson; low risk, high reward…well, at least a moderate reward

This stinks
Notwithstanding that the Ginats already have plenty of outfielders, I think this is a loss of talent. I think Davis was a much better pinch-runner than Ort, which seems to be all they’re doing with him these days anyway.
On the plus side, at least I now know a position player on the A’s which will be useful when I go to games over there. I think he will help them out.

Davis is a better PR, but Ort can fill in at all three OF positions, play 1B, and can hit a little more than Raj. I hope he does well, but I don’t think the Giants’ made a mistake.

I’m disappointed. I really liked Rajai and I don’t think it was at all fair to completely give up on him after, what, 20 at bats? That’s ridiculous.

Agreed.
I liked Raj, and I’m sad to see him go.

If the decision was between Lewis and Davis, I’ll take Lewis every time too.

I’m surprised he was claimed. Looks like he has a lot to work on and the best place would have been AAA.

Good for Rajai
Expect game-winning hits, stolen bases and diving catches in the outfield when he plays the Giants in the Bay Bridge Series.

yeah but
All he could muster was a triple and two lousy singles. Also of note … Liriano 0-3, 11.32 ERA. Zito-like!

Yeah
But Liriano had Tommy John like, less than a year ago, right?
I know it doesn’t take that long to get back to “playing shape,” but doesn’t it generally take two full years to actual finish recovery from that surgery? Or am I wrong?

AJ trade looking better every day
Liriano’s was in Nov. 2006. Some guys take longer than others. Dempster and Burnett, for example, pitched decently after about a year. Then there was the tragic case of Jose Canseco, who was never the same pitcher again.

Except for the fact where the Twins already got like eight hundred times more value out of that trade than we did. But yeah, it’s looking great!

He was injury prone in the minors in the first place, so I’m not surprised. I hope he does well for the Twins, but somehow I don’t see this having a happy ending. Foppert like, if you will.
