minor lines, 4/21/08
AAA: Fresno defeated Tucson 5-4 (11 innings)
Fresno: CF Clay Timpner: 2 for 4, 2 BB, SB
Fresno: SS Ivan Ochoa: 2 for 5, 3B, BB, 3 SO
Fresno: RF Nate Schierholtz: 2 for 5, BB, SB
Tucson: C Miguel Montero: 1 for 2, 3 BB, IBB, GiDP
Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 6.0+ IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Fresno: LHP Alex Hinshaw: 1.0 IP, 2 BB
Timpner paced the Grizzlies' offense by reaching base four times, while Ochoa and Schierholtz each reached base three times. Ochoa, who is in his second season in the Giants organization after signing as a minor league free agent, is only a few months older than Timpner. Two nights after drawing their first walks of the season, Timpner and Schierholtz combined to draw three more walks. Schierholtz also had an outfield assist when he threw out a runner at the plate. The 24-year-old Montero reached base four times for the Diamondbacks' affiliate. He is now hitting .250/.382/.429 in 28 AB this year.
Misch allowed four runs but never more than one run in an inning. An 11/4 GO/FO line improved his GO/AO ratio to 1.90. Hinshaw worked a scoreless inning despite throwing just 5 of 14 pitches for strikes.
AA: Connecticut defeated Bowie 1-0
(with only run scoring in bottom of 9th inning)
Connecticut: C Adam Witter: 0 for 2, 2 BB, SO
Connecticut: DH Simon Klink: 2 for 3, HBP, SO
Connecticut: PH Olma Rosario: 1 for 1
Bowie: RF Nolan Reimold: 1 for 2, BB
Connecticut: RHP Dave McKae: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Klink reached base three times in the pitcher's duel, bringing his OBP above .300. Witter also reached base twice. With more walks than hits (14 BB and 11 H among 46 AB), he has a .410 OBP despite an AVG below .240. Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 9th inning, Rosario drove in the game's only run with a single. Reimold, one of the top prospects in the Orioles organization and perhaps one of the top 100 prospects in baseball depending on who you ask, accounted for two of the Baysox's four baserunners.
McKae has a dominant start, allowing just three baserunners and improving his ERA to 2.45. His 8/9 GO/FO line is consistent with his 0.85 GO/AO ratio this year, although he had a 1.32 GO/AO ratio with Connecticut last year. For the Defenders, it was their 9th straight one-run game and 12th overall this year (in 18 games this year).
A+: San Jose had a scheduled off-day
(the first scheduled off-day for any of the Giants' full-season affiliates)
(their next scheduled off-day is May 5th)

A-: Augusta defeated Greenville 5-2
Augusta: RF Francisco Peguero: 0 for 1, 3 BB, SB
Augusta: 2B Brock Bond: 2 for 3, BB, SB, E
Augusta: DH Thomas Neal: 3 for 4, HR, 2B, SO
Greenville: CF Che-Hsuan Lin: 3 for 3, 2B, BB, CS
Augusta: RHP Orlando Yntema: 4.0+ IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K--1 WP, 1 PO
Augusta: LHP Steven Calicutt: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K--1 PO
Peguero, batting leadoff and starting for just the fourth time this year, reached base three times. Two more hits boosted Bond's AVG above .400. Both Peguero and Bond had their 2nd steal. The major offense, though, was provided by Neal, who had three hits, including his 4th homer and 3rd double. The 20-year-old is now hitting .372/.404/.767 in 43 AB. The Red Sox' Lin, a 20-year-old from Taiwan, is playing well in his first experience in full-season baseball, now batting .308/.430/.446.
Yntema had a short but decently effective start, despite walking three batters after issuing just one walk in his previous two starts. Calicutt, the opening day starter, made his first relief appearance after three starts. Four shutout innings in relief improved his ERA to 3.71. Yntema and Calicutt combined for a 12/4 GO/FO line.

Plus he’s really funny and silly. Last Saturday I was sitting around watching the little Giants take BP. Pablo pushed the ball cart thing around going “vroom vroom” when they were packing stuff up.

I didn’t know females had built-in age recognition abilities. Must be something I missed when I was forming into a zygote.

Zygote=a fertilized cell that has two haploid cells, a sperm and an ovum, formed into a diploid cell. It is undergoing mitosis to develop into an embryo.
For the laypeople, it’s what happens when babies are made. Well, all the stuff that happens after the fun part is over.

Casey Bond had an at bat in the Fresno game. From the AZL to Fresno in about six months. And here we thought that Brock was the Bond to watch.

1-0
Does Connecticut play more 1-0 games than anyone else in the history of baseball?
On a somwhat related note, outside of Nate and maybe Romo, there is virtually nothing worth paying attention to above San Jose. Both of those lineups are terrible.

I’m watching EME to see if this comeback thing he’s doing is for real, and I want to see Osiris Matos break out.

Witter?
I think its worth keeping an eye on Witter. His combination of OBP & SLG ability make him somewhat intriguing.
Looking at Witter’s PB totals would seem to suggest he’s a little dodgy behind the plate – I wonder if there’s another non 1B position that might work for him…

(This is in addition to the other names mentioned, particularly Witter)
I’d even put Ishikawa in the list, to see if he can pull off the comeback.

There’s also Brian Anderson in Fresno when he comes back, and I’m really hoping Pereira can put something together this year.

Some picks to click
Brute….. A couple of comments regarding your analysis. Pichardo and Matos having good years so far, but Matos looks like he’s lost a little giddyup. Last night he was in the 87/88 range. Regarding your “UM”, Mc Niven has been consistent in his 3 starts and I could easily argue that to date he’s been the most effective Def starter. And lastly, dear old EME. I know you really like this guy, but his improvement from the past is marginal. It’s true his K’s are down and his average is up, but he still isn’t driving the ball. All of his hits, except one, have been singles, most hit to the right side. He just doesn’t seem to be able to pull the ball. And he looks like he’s put on weight. He’s still slower then slow and a liability in the field in spite of having 3 assists.

A plan?
I really hope that the Giants FO plan to move D’Alessio up to AA by the end of May and Thomas Neal up to A+.
There’s way too many non-prospects at Fresno and Conneticut.
Is there really any chance that Klink makes the bigs? His DH ABs should really be going to a player that has some chance of making the Giants IMO.
by aGIANTfan on Apr 22, 2008 9:50 AM PDT 0 recs
I agree, but after leaving Andy D in rookie ball all last season, I don’t mind him getting a couple runs through A+ before the jump to AA. Maybe McClain/Leone to the bigs, TI to AAA, or cut TI/Klink?

the higher your average, the lower your iso obp will be, its not like iso slg% because you have to add in a plate appearance for every walk not just adding an extra base to a double
if you have 1 hit in 9 ab’s plus a walk youre hitting .111 with a 200 obp (iso .089)
if you have 3 hits in 9 abs plus a walk youre hitting .333 with a 400 obp (iso .067)
