Quote of the Year
I'm on sfgate.com, and see this beautifully worded fanpost. It reads:
"If the Giants don't trade Lincecum and Cain at the deadline for 3 or 4 TOP prospects each I am switching allegiances."—voiceofrzn
I read this. Then read it again. And laughed. Trade Cain AND Lincecum for prospects? Now, I'm no baseball genius, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and think that if the Giants were to trade both of them, more fans would switch allegiances than would stick around. So good day, Voice of Raisin, we hardly knew ye.
Obviously, that's just my opinion, I'm sure many of you might view it differently. So, what say you all? Would you be happier to trade our two best commodities in order to satiate Voiceofrzn, or just one, or neither?

I don't know...
trading 1 of them for 3-4 top prospects isn’t a ridiculous notion.
Flossing a dead horse
Let's just say
I’d rather build exclusively throught Free Agency than trade both of those guys for no more than 3-4 studs worth of a return.
In fact, it would take the kind of return that would leave us unquestionably competitive for the next ten years to justify trading BOTH of them, IMO.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.
if you could trade one of them
and get the kind of return that Beane got for Haren, would you do it?
Here’s how I see it. I want nothing to do with trading either of these guys, but their value is SO high, that it might be necessary in order to actually compete in the next 3-4 years. Our farm system is so empty of quality prospects, that we might HAVE to trade one of them in order to compete again in a reasonable amount of time.
2002? I'm over it. But I'll never be over Rich Aurilia.
what kenshin/JRP said
1 pitcher nets 3-4 STUD prospects, not both for prospects.
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.
I agree
As much as I hate to come to terms with it, trading one of them for a strong bounty might be necessary to compete in a reasonable time frame…
But trading BOTH? Tha’s just hard to deal with on a level that I find hard to deal with.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

What blew me away was that sfgate actually put that on the front page of the Giants page! There wasn’t a comment in their fan post section that WASN’T devoid of rational thought that they could have used instead?

i dont want to trade any of the pitchers because Sabean will probably get fleeced again…..Lincecum looks like the real deal,
but im not sold on Cain anymore…i think people around here
overestimate his trade value…
You’re getting traded for a pack of Tic Tacs for that blasphemy!

So..
Having a pitcher go 7-16 with a 3.65 ERA last year doesn’t make you feel sorry for him? sure, wins and ERA aren’t the tell all about a pitcher, ERA is usefull and wins make no sense, but to most of the world they go “ooooo wins shiny!”
Last year, Mark Buehrle went 10-9 with a 3.63 ERA. Justin Verlander went 18-6 with a 3.66 ERA. Those were the two pitchers above and below him in the ERA ranking. The next pitcher that had a worst Win % had an ERA of 5.10, Chris Capuano for the Milwaukee Brewers.
His last season was epic. He was such an unlucky pitcher, and truely was screwed over many many times by his offense and bullpen.

sure, you're right

hmmm...
there are too many posters I like in this thread to respond to one directly. So I will pose this question to everyone.
Would you do the Erik Bedard trade replacing Bedard with Cain or Lincecum?
Flossing a dead horse
Yes
But I would probably trade Cain. I love Adam Jones and the rest of the prospects in that deal are pretty interesting players, as well.
I’d probably also trade Cain for the Haren package.
http://www.baycityball.com
Change that probably to definitely, I just looked at that deal again and holy crap the A’s got a boatload of talent in that trade.
http://www.baycityball.com
Really?
Cain should be more valuable than Haren. He’s younger, under control and cheaper for a longer time. and just as good.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
I didn't say I would trade him for Haren
I would trade him for that package of players, unless you think that the Giants could get a better package than the A’s got for Haren.
Carlos González, Brett Anderson, Aaron Cunningham, Greg Smith, Dana Eveland, and Chris Carter is a pretty nice package if you ask me.
http://www.baycityball.com
Yeah, I get what you're saying
What I’m saying is that the Giants should get more. Cain is cheaper and has one more year of control.
I’m not saying the package is not nice, but the A’s did not get any of the Dbacks untouchables, Upton and Young, or even Scherzer.
There’s no one in that package in the Adam Jones class. I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. Whether you want to take a higher reward higher risks deal and go for a package that contains an Adam Jones type, or take a package that spreads the risks around.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
I think the Giants could get more, maybe, but I wonder how other teams value Cain? As opposed to a guy like Haren who has “nicer looking” stats over the last few years. Wins of 14, 14, and 15, while Cain went 7-16 last year. Haren definitely had peak value after his 2007 season and I think the A’s moved him at the right time.
http://www.baycityball.com
Trading Cain would make sense
But only if the Giants strike out on the FA market this offseason and they get MLB talent for him, not just prospects.
The thought also makes me cry.
Eugeniooooooo!!!!
by FairweatherFan on Apr 21, 2008 12:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Nicer looking stats?
ERA, Cain, 2.33, 4.15, 3.65
Haren, 3.73, 4.12, 3.07.
I seriously doubt any GM is going to assess Cain based on that 7-16 record. The wins might be a relevant issue, if Cain’s record was something along the lines of 3-9, ie he has injury / durability issues.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
Yeah, nicer looking stats
Which I mean’t by W’s and especially Haren’s ‘07 season and that super low ERA.
He’s also thrown 200+ innings for three years in a row making him “omg durable”
Again, I’m not saying Haren is better, but I can see why a lot of people in baseball would value him higher than Cain.
http://www.baycityball.com
I think I’d try to get one other prospect, like Balentien or Clement, in addition to Jones/Tillman/whatever, just because they’re so far from FA and (in Cain’s case) locked up so cheaply. I might be overestimating their trade value, but whatever, I’m irrational when it comes to them.

Neither... trade SANCHEZ!
JT the Brick commented on his radio show a couple weeks ago about how he can’t believe that the Giants are as small of a market as they lead people on to believe.
The only logical reason to trade studs like Cain and Lincecum is if you’re Minnesota and can’t afford a max contract.
Keep both of them, build around them through free agency, and trade commodities like Sanchez/Walker who should be able to fetch some decent prospects.
If JT the Brick said it
I suggest we determine what the opposite of that is, then do it with all due alacrity
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.

Keep 'em all
I’m warning you guys not to screw with my future rotation of Cain, Lincecum, Sosa, Bumgarner and Alderson. The longer we suck with our anemic offense the higher we pick in the draft. Angel, Noonan, Schierholtz, Bowker, Lewis, Velez, Fairley a couple of other kids and the high draft choices of the next couple of seasons combined with maybe two or three decent FA signings will give us enough offense so that we don’t have to look at guys like Cain or Tim in another uniform. Don’t blaspheme!!
Brian Sabean's new dad: Firm believer in corporal punishment
I hope you're right
what do you/others think about trying to draft mainly college hitters? maybe less upside but usually a faster track to the majors… isn’t that part of Beane’s philosophy?
2002? I'm over it. But I'll never be over Rich Aurilia.
I have real trouble
believing Cain and Bumgarner will ever be Giants teammates. It strains my most optimistic credulity to believe Cain and Alderson will be teammates.

C’mon Rog, did it strain your most optimistic credulity to believe Aurilia and Bocock would be teammates? How about Durham and Burriss?
The man has a point. Perhaps it would be wise to call up Alderson and Bumgarner now. To see what they can do, y’know.
