Josh Sharpless
Giants signed RHP Josh Sharpless to a minor league contract. Released by the Pirates at the end of camp, Sharpless will head to extended spring training and then move to Triple-A Fresno once he's in shape.Does anybody know anything about this dude? Looking at his career stats, it looks like he hasn't really pitched much at all. Does he have injury problems? Is he a good addition for bullpen support or is he just some more minor league filler? Will I ask another question? Also "Sharpless" isn't the greatest name for a pitcher.

Also “Sharpless” isn’t the greatest name for a pitcher.
Better than “Walker”.
You deserve to be struck out, when your first name's a verb.

or Jimm Homerun. That would be the worst.

Just be glad the Giants didn’t sign Dan Cantthrowastriketosavehisfreakinglife.

I’m surprised they didn’t trade for I. M. Sucky when he was being shopped.

“Will I ask another question?” is a much better way to fill up the 75-word mark than “Filler filler filler.”

Looking at his minor league stats on the Cube, he looks like a Billy Sadler clone. Great K rate with an atrocious control problem. He’s only 26, so he’s worth a flyer.

Had one really great year in 2004 with Hickory in the Sally League, 109 K in 74.1 IP. Otherwise, not a heck of a lot else.

I only know...
...that he was born in Beaver, PA. And that he’s like Erick Threets from the right side.

if he's like Threets
that’s a lot of BB’s out of the bullpen.

So...
I’m pretty sure that Sabean only gets players now if they played for the Pirates. He’s trying to find that Barry gold again?

I’d guess he only finds it fair, what with them having taken Matt Morris off our hands.

#18 on BA's Pirates top 30
He was pretty well regarded entering spring training this year, Im not sure why he was released.
His description says that he has a straight overhand delivery, a big breaking slider and a deceptive (because of the delivery) low 90’s fastball. It also says that he was kicking ass at the end of ‘06 but Pittsburgh’s pitching coach tinkered with his mechanics and he lost his release point and has thus far been unable to recover it.
Seems like a solid no risk, moderate returns pick up, if he can rediscover his release point I would guess that his ceiling is that of a set-up man.

becasue #18
in the Pirates farm system is like being #199 in the BoSox system?

Nah they have some pretty good prospects. Have had them for a while. The team just mismanages them.

unlike our management, who mismanages bad prospects.

if the Giants didn't have bad prospects
they wouldn’t have any prospects at all…
by nostocksjustbonds on Apr 18, 2008 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That might be a misconception...
See, the Giants would have to field farm teams anyway. So if they didn’t have bad prospects, they’d have to fill in the space with someone. Therefore, no bad prospects means mediocre to awesome prospects. We could be SO much better off!
