Wilson's Entrance Music...

So the Merc has an article about Brian Wilson's entrance music. Turns out it's some Christian rock song called "Rise Up" which left me feeling a little bleh and--I hate to say it, but--a little weirded out, too.

Anyway, I got to thinking about other closers' songs and some alternative choices. Unfortunately, based on my brief research endeavor, Trevor Hoffman may have claimed dibs on what might be the best entrance music with "Hell's Bells" (that ominous intro + classic riff combo is harder to find that I had thought, and on a purely objective level, I think it's a better choice than "Smoke on the Water", which I will always associate with a particular Kids in the Hall skit).

The best I could come up with would be Danzig's "Mother". Of course, this only works if they play a new version of the video on the jumbotron, where Wilson acts out Danzig's parts. Maybe the parts around 2:16, or 3:00. Who's with me?

I’ve always thought AC/DC’s Thunderstruck would be awesome

or maybe Boston’s Foreplay

Foreplay..

Yea that would be pretty awesome as an entrance music.

Thunderstruck is a good choice because the intro is great, the rest of the song… meh.
Another good “intro” song is “Into the Lungs of Hell” by Megadeth

That’s JJ Putz’s entrance music for the Mariners. The whole place goes nuts when the music starts, and they have lightning bolts flashing on all the scoreboards. Pretty cool.

Since Wilson’s first job was working in a graveyard, I think “Giants” by Gravedigger would be the perfect song for him. It’s angry German metal. Appropriate title. What more do we need?

The language disqualifies it, but Mr. November by the National would be perfect! “I won’t fuck us over” is the perfect sentiment for a closer.

I’ve also always felt that if I were a baseball player, my walkup music would be from The Punk and the Godfather (by the Who) from like 3:22 to 3:40.

INXS's "What You Need"

Peppy intro riff, some nice revving up music. I listened to it about 20 times in a row the morning of and on my way to taking the LSAT, and nailed it like a drunk cheerleader.

There's a Phish song called 'Wilson'

It starts with a couple a riffs, and the fans shout ‘Wil-son!!!’, and repeat four times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n8CODbY8MM

That part of the song repeats just soon enough to probably happen one more time before batters actually come up.

I love the idea of using this. Can you imagine a sold out crowd in the ninth calling in Wilson themselves with that chant? The crowd participation factor alone, not to mention the connection with Phish and San Francisco, and this song is a winner in my book.

But…Phish’s connection is Boston, if anything. They are from Vermont.

Phish fans in general...initially

Werent’ hippies. They were college kids. The jam band scene in the NE is much stronger than in the bay area. Once Jerry died the bad part of the crowd (ie: the drug scene) moved over to Phish. Phish were already playing Shoreline sized venues before August of 1995. In fact, they fall 95 tour opened at Shoreline and had been booked before the influx of the dead hangers on.

A few years ago, a friend of mine sent me this song saying this is what he wanted to come out of the bullpen to if he were a closer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4mTfQpiJtY

It’s probably the exact opposite of what Wilson’s going for in his music, but it always gets me pumped up.

I’ve also always thought “Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult would be an interesting song to enter a game with.

On loan from Trevor Hoffman

I will always remember this:

Japan was ahead in the World Baseball Cup final game going into the ninth inning. Otsuka Akinori had just been traded to the Rangers from the Padres before the season began. He was to close for team Japan.

So when we heard the familiar intro to Hell’s Bells in Petco Park, the place went absolutely bananas. Here comes Otsuka into the save the game. Of course Japan won that game. In the paper the next day, Otsuka explained how Hoffman let him “borrow” the song. Great stuff.
