The K Dude has some questions

Hey there McCoven, I'm the guy who puts the Ks on the brick wall in right field and as the title implies, I have a couple question for you guys.

1) Should I put up Ks for relievers?

I got ribbed for doing this a few nights ago so I wanna know what you feel about it.

2) Does anyone want to fill in for me on day games during the week?

I guess you'd have to be sitting around Section 101-103 and you'd sort of have to supply your own Ks. I get my cardstock from Flax on Market and Valencia for a dollar a sheet. I could offer one of my Ks as a stencil and all you'd have to do is trace and cut.

3) I didn't come off badly on TV did I?

They literally grabbed me a couple innings before and asked me for an interview while setting a few guidelines. The whole thing happened so fast, I barely remember it, and haven't a TiVo.

Keep on blagging McCoven!

My only request

For Merkin, can the Ks have a little furry thing attached?

by mxmob33 on Apr 16, 2008 11:06 PM PDT reply actions

agreed

i know that it would require extra time, but personalized Ks would be awesome. Hennessey’s could have rosey cheeks and be stumbling around the cardstock.

Your Famous!!!

You seemed a little nervous on TV but its all good man. You’re a rockstar. Keep the K only for starting pitching and dont bother doing it on days when Zito pitches.

I put up K’s for the relievers, so you’re in good company. Don’t let ‘em get to you. Keep racking those K’s.

The giants should do it

the giants management should actually get some nice K’s to put along the R field wall. Now that there is no home run tracker it would be a good replacement.

I commend you for having the initiative to do it on your own. I think you should only do it for the Lincecum starts, to be honest. Sanchez is getting a lot of K’s, but Linc is really the only K sign pitcher we have ever had.

The point of the K meter is to show how awesome your boy is.

K signs look retarded when they aren’t going up every inning. That’s why I say only for Timmy, with the verdict out on Sanchez.

Cain gets plenty of K’s too. Correia can get some good K rates on occasion.

Not a K per IP, though

and that is what the K signs are for. Dominating strikeout pitchers, not pitchers with better than average K’s.

by positiveuphemism on Apr 17, 2008 12:15 AM PDT up reply actions

Just because Cain doesn’t get a K per IP doesn’t mean he isn’t a strikeout pitcher. That’s kind of an arbitrary cut-off. Last year he had a game with 11 K’s, a game with 9, and 3 games with 8. That’s plenty of cardstock on the wall. Who’s to say he won’t have a better K rate this year?

Think about it. When do you see those things being used? Yeah…for the big time K pitchers. Otherwise it is just pathetic.

Oh boy!! 4 K’s!! WOOHOO!!!

Oh look..Zito is starting…wow, no K’s today.

It’s just stupid when it isn’t for the big guys.

Well I can’t really tell how many Ks a pitcher will have that night and except for Zito, who is getting frustrating, it seems like all our starters have the capability to really get to batters. Also I sort of like putting up the Ks, it’s fun and supporting our run-starved pitchers who hopefully won’t try to escape the first chance they get.

If a pitcher can get 5-6Ks, I feel it’s worth it.

Don't you it's gonna be all right. But not right now.

I would only do it for starters, it might get a little confusing with the relievers.

But the cool thing about your tv appearance was that it was the game that mlb.tv broadcast for free, so tons of random people saw it.

Considering

Each of our starters has the capability to make the opponent grab some serious pine (except Zito), I like seeing it for all starters.

So what if one day Sanchez only strikes out 3… you will feel stupid if you don’t do it for his next start where he strikes out 11.

I wouldn’t mind seeing it for releivers, either. Once of the exciting things about our bullpen this year is that Wilson, Walker, Valdez, and Special Agent all have some serious strikeout stuff.

Even more impressive than lincecum striking out say 8 in 6 innings is any of the releivers wiffing two in one.

And it WILL happen this year where the releif corp comes in and burns down the side… so I think it would be appropriate there as well.

Hang ‘em up – and hang ‘em up proud. We’ve got a strikeout pitching staff – so all in all it makes sense.

Btw, the Giants lead the NL in strikeouts.

I know you are only using Sanchez as

an example here, but I would like to point out that he has 15 IP and 21 SO which is almost exactly the rate that “Timmay” has, 16 IP and 22 SO.

As a marketing tool, perhaps the front office can do some K sound byte stuff, similar to the walk up music for the batters. My son and I sit in center field and do South Park “Timmay” goofs when he records a K. I think it would be cool if they did that over the PA. But hey, if it is a important situation and the batter gets to two strikes the crowd is already into it, and because there have been quite a few of those moments sofar this year the K’s have made it fun.

I’ve been meaning to post my great appreciation for this year’s bullpen, relative to last year’s and this is a great time to do so. So, put those K’s up for them too.

I agree

In fact, I don’t think you should be limited by just putting them up when a batter actually strikes out. Put up two for particularly wicked fastball Ks. Three for dramatic end the inning with runners on every base Ks. If an inning goes by with a K, stick one up just for the heck of it and hope nobody notices. Just think how intimadating it’ll be for opposing batters to face Timmy or Matty with a row of like 40 Ks out there!

Though I have to ask, did speaking to that annoying sideline reporter make you want to die? Whenever she speaks to the Giants guys they look like they’re silently wishing for their own deaths.

I’ve only had one guy avoid looking at me in interview situations. The rest at least retain eye contact. I’ve never ever seen a guy have the silent death wish look on his face when I speak to him. At least not in baseball.

Tired of Female Sideline Reporters

Maybe it’s sexist, but these girlie reporters get on my nerves. I never even get the impression that they’re interested in baseball since they’ll keep talking while the game is going on. That Cammie chick was bad but this new one—ugh.

I’ve been unhappy with the interjection of women into sportscasting in general. Now it could be that they’re putting in the wrong type of woman; the kind of woman who is more interested in how she looks on camera than in the baseball game going on around her.

Renel is an exception. She’s not particularly pretty and seems like a real passionate fan. If they’re going to have women in the broadcasts they should be more like her. You know the kind of girl that’s yelling at the umpire and has peanut shells all over here, not the kind of woman checking the jumbotron to see if she’s on it.

by Change Up on Apr 17, 2008 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't blame the reporters for "being the wrong type of woman"

Blame the producers for hiring the wrong type of reporter. I’d rather watch virtually anyone than Jeannie Zelasko or however you spell her freaking name. She is positively painful to watch.

But let’s face it: sports reporting is a tough racket to break into for a woman. There are precious few good commentators, regardless of their genders. It should be a meritocracy, but it ain’t, yet. Hopefully we’ll get there.

by delorean on Apr 17, 2008 10:42 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s it right there. Without hopping on my soapbox about this subject, I’ll keep it brief. I got out of broadcasting for that very reason. I went into college as a broadcast major hell bent on being the female Jon Miller.

There are two types of women in broadcasting in general—the ones who actually want to and will work, and the ones who just say “I want to be on TV!” In my classes at college I dealt with more of the “I want to be on TV!” gals than the ones who actually knew shit. It’s sad, really. I saw more than a few really smart girls I worked with in these classes just bail because they didn’t want to deal with the BS either.

Granted, working with people in this business you’ll get the nosepickers of either gender. I can remember directing a television program in my production class and asking camera 3 to zoom in about four times before the floor manager had to go over there and ask the guy to do what I asked him to do.

As long as a network will hire someone who doesn’t have a real committment to learning the trade and working the trade, there will be this problem. I’d place the blame on the women who don’t strive to use their brains as much as the suits who hire them to not use their brains. It’s a crappy cycle.

I knew I’d have problems if I stayed in broadcasting because I’m not the stereotypical “hot chick.” I don’t want to start a debate on that here. I just mention it because it was a large factor to focus on writing, where my words would proceed my appearance. I use my masculine nickname because I feel it makes most readers default to thinking of me as a male, therefore not questioning my intellgence or knowledge. Then when I show up to speak to a guy for an interview and drop the questions that I spent lots of time researching, I get some pretty good quotes.

So it’s a fight. I’m not gonna lie to you. I’m extremely disappointed in the sideline reporter racket, and I am extremely thrilled to know there are amazing ladies like Renel out there. It’s really disappointing to me to give up my dreams of play by play MLB broadcasting, especially since I really wanted to start up alternate language broadcasting Stateside in Japanese or Korean. But we do what we can, because trying to take on the whole system by yourself means you will lose.

This is going to get me in trouble..

But I think the tonal qualities of the female voice are typically less well suited to public address. Renel has a rare talent (and notice she has a relatively low voice, for a woman). Public address carries over into sports reporting because, while not attempting to project your voice, your inflection and dynamics are important. The excited call of a remarkable play is Key to a successfull commentator, and doing so in a female voice while retaining clarity and tonal moderation is uncommon.

I’ve noticed this in all sorts of forums. Some may call it sexist, but It’s just my opinion based on years of observation. A man can raise his voice and typically sound powerful. When a woman raises her voice, often it raises in tone as well and becomes shrill.

Evidence: Hillary Vs. Barack.

Anyway, something to think about.

In fact the other sportswriters are the bigger jerks. I haven’t been harassed by any of them, but they’re generally snippy people. So I can’t blame that on me having one more X chromosome than they have.

I like the color idea. I’ll see what I can do.

Don't you it's gonna be all right. But not right now.

Black for the starters and orange for the relievers?

I was worried

the orange may not show up well against the bricks.

You make a strong point

That’s true. Your way might be better after all.

My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

If the K’s are on a white background, it should be fine.

I read the name of the diary and thought Natto has something to ask…

You deserve to be struck out, when your first name's a verb.

That K dude...

...only has one question: “Who are these weird Americans and why are they putting my picture on a baseball blog?”

2008: My previous assessment may have been overly optimistic.

You’re clearly a baseball nerd. You will find nothing but acceptance here.

Late to the party...

Why not..like Natto..do the K’s different for looking and swinging? Someone suggested black and orange K’s, why not have one for looking, and the other set up backwards and be another color? Or just reverse the colors, black on an orange background, orange on a black background as well.
