Open Gameday Thread, Jr.
Other than walking the bases loaded and then giving up a single to the opposing pitcher, Zito has been dominant.
Also, if Rich Aurilia could hit and field like he did in 2001, he'd be the best player on the team.

OT-ness TBD
Since it relates to Zito’s starts and run support, I guess it’s appropriate to post here.
I’m locked in a discussion on the Giants and Zito’s run suport this season. Someone said Zito’s run support is at 1.3 for the year, and nobody can tell how to figure this number.
Wikipedia’s run support page says this: It measures how many runs were scored by his team on average when he starts. Would that then mean to take the number of runs the Giants score and divide that figure by the number of appearances Zito makes? Forgive me because I’m absolutely worthless when it comes to math.

Math is fried ass, friend. At least I can sort of do it when I have the formulas in front of me. Figuring out where the numbers go sucks. Which is why word problems are retarded and should be banned.

ESPN defines it as “Team’s runs scored (average, per 9 innings pitched) while the pitcher of record.” That says to me that, today, since Zito went 6 IP with 1 run of support during those innings, the RS is 1.50.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Okay can you break that down for me because I have no idea how 6, 1, and 1.50 all relate to one another.

by BaronVonCurrentEvents on Apr 16, 2008 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions
It’s like ERA, but for runs scored. So you start with 1 run in 6 innings. 1 divided by 6 is .167 runs per inning. Multiply it by 9 for a nine inning game and you get 1.5 runs per nine innings.
If you like things that are funny, perhaps you will enjoy ChatterBalks Dot Com?
Thank you all
k! Now I have new ways of understanding how terrible the Giants are!

by BaronVonCurrentEvents on Apr 16, 2008 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions
Zito was the pitcher of record for six innings. During those six innings, the Giants scored one run. To calculate how many runs that is per nine innings, we divide 1 by 6, getting 0.16666… runs per inning, then multiply that by 9, getting 1.5 runs per 9 innings.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Like calculating ERA. You figure it out per inning, then multiply by 9 to get the picture for the whole game. So today, BZ got 1 run of support in 6 innings (1/6 = .1667), so across 9 innings (i.e., multiply it by 9), he would expect 1.5 runs per game. The analogy would be his ERA, which says he would cough up 4.5 runs per game if he pitched the whole thing, which he can’t do. So he gives up 4.5 ER per game and only gets 1.5 runs in support, so on average, he would lose every game he ever started.
Oh, wait—he IS losing every game he starts. See? Math works.

My math book once told me that a football team gained negative seven yards on three consecutive plays. There are so many things wrong with this.
One, you don’t gain negative yards in football. You either gain yards, or you lose yards, depending on where you go from the line of scrimmage. Two, a team that loses seven yards on each play in a series is a piss poor team and needs to be fired from the NFL.
Math is stupid.

Oh well
Speed and defense, apparently not enough.

5-5 homestand
I’m afraid in 2008 playing .500 at home will have to count as an unqualified success.
Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.
Unqualified
Coincidentally, this adjective also describes the Giants offense.
2008: My previous assessment may have been overly optimistic.
Zito 0 & 4
What’s the worst W/L record an “Ace” pitcher (read:opening day starter) has ever ended up with?
I used to be disgusted, but now I try to be amused!
We will know @ the end of this season.

Mike Maroth,
Tigers’ opening-day starter in 2003, went 9-21 that year, losing 20 games for the first time in two decades?
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
funny thing is, i remember sabean really liking maroth and hoping to acquire him a few years ago.
Uribe to Thompson to Clark: Don't tinker ever with chance
U can't be serious....?
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
btw, how’d you become a dbacks, skins fan? i’m a giants, skins fan.
Uribe to Thompson to Clark: Don't tinker ever with chance
Born in DC,
have lived there twice in my life, and before the Nats came along, I’d be damned before I’d root for a lousy Bal’more team like the Orioles. Saw my first major league game at Fenway, while living in Lowell, MA, but just never got into the Red Sux.
Moved to Tucson in ‘92; I was in AZ when the Dbacks were formed. The rest, as they say, is history.
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
Funny thing
SI’s Jon Heyman does a “History’s Worst Free-Agent Deals” piece and The Albatross is “only” ninth on the list.
bowker, still the hitting star for the giants today. that’s 4 for 4, all of his starts, in case bochy didn’t notice
Uribe to Thompson to Clark: Don't tinker ever with chance
Only Giant to reach base twice
Although I think Velez with the RBI double has a case for the hitting star of the game, such as it is.
2008: My previous assessment may have been overly optimistic.
But then I have to choose between the Giants and entertaining television programs

Correct
1-9 in day games, 5-1 at night.
It’s time to send a missile into space to blow up the sun. And we’re just the blog to do it.

THT
THT has linked to Grant’s piece of third place optimism. I think it’s the second time this week McC got the nod. Why is it that that seems cool but when si.com does it it feels so dirty? Dirty in a bad way.
The way some people find Spirituality in mid-life, I found Baseball.
Jon Miller picking Byrnes in the Wrap
Dagger in the heart.
Billy Hayes: Nine more big-league plate appearances than you.
Enough IS Enough
When Lowry returns they need to send Zito down to AAA and keep Sanchez and Correia intact.
Well then...
see you folks in Phoenix?
"I was tied to a chair and he had a baseball bat. Pissing him off was the smart thing to do."
You win this round...
but remember, you guys missed having to face Cain and Lincecum in this series. The tables will be turned next week in the desert, when you’ll…ummm….also be missing them.
Dammit.
Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.
You mean Barry Zito isn't your best pitcher....
....even though he makes like a billion dollars over the next decade?
Honestly, I was pretty pleased when I checked the matchups and discovered that we weren’t going to face either of those two guys.
