Bowker at 1B!
JT is breaking him in:
http://www.mercurynews.com/giantsheadlines/ci_8929302
Special instructor J.T. Snow is excited to see John Bowker in the major leagues, and not just because the 24-year-old outfielder hit home runs in the first two games of his career.
Snow's commute got a whole lot shorter, too.
Giants General Manager Brian Sabean had asked Snow to make a trip to Triple-A Fresno this week, to help teach Bowker the finer points of playing first base. They began that process in earnest Monday, with Snow standing watch as Bowker took groundballs.
Snow liked Bowker's hands, his footwork and the way he snapped short throws to second base. "You can usually tell after a few groundballs if a guy has some athletic ability," Snow said.
And?
"He didn't let any go between his legs," Snow said.
Daniel Ortmeier might have gotten an entire spring to practice at first base, but Bowker is taking the crash course. The Giants are desperate for a left-handed bat at the position now that Ortmeier has abandoned switch-hitting to focus on the right side.
Bowker said he played first base at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento and has taken groundballs in instructional league play. He doesn't have any game experience as a pro, unless you count a half-dozen minor league scrimmages at the end of camp this spring.
"I don't know if it's natural for me, but I can handle it," he said.
• Injured shortstop Omar Vizquel took groundballs and tried jogging on his sore left knee, but pulled the plug after
a few minutes. He was scheduled to be re-examined by a doctor Monday night. When he returns, Vizquel acknowledged that he probably will not have the same range.
"It will be hard to be the same as I was last year, for sure," the 11-time Gold Glove winner said. "With that brace, I don't think you can move the same way. You'll probably be limited or restrained."
Trainer Dave Groeschner said Vizquel might be overly pessimistic. "Clearly he's frustrated by this, and I can't blame him," Groeschner said. "But I think he'll work out of this. I think you will see the same guy. It's hard for him to envision that, the way he's feeling right now."
Some scouts believe Vizquel lost a step last season, especially to his right, but that Pedro Feliz's exceptional defense at third base helped to obscure the issue.
Vizquel was clear on one matter: shortstop is his only position. "I don't have any business at second base."
• With his banner game Sunday, Bowker became the first Giants player to drive in at least four runs in a game before his 25th birthday since Jay Canizaro on Aug. 21. 1996, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. The Giants had seven RBIs by players younger than 25 Sunday, the most in a game since Will Clark drove in seven runs all by himself on June 22, 1988.

John Bowker
If John Bowker could master 1b and ML pitching he could alter the plans for the entire organization. GM Brian Sabean would no longer be looking to deal for the slugging LHH he is craving. Sabean would then be able to keep the resources he may have traded for a 1b to enhance the Giants or deal them in a separate trade to shore up other positions – most notably 3b and SS.
If John Bowker could master 1b another OF prospect (Lewis, Schierholtz, Ortmeier or EME) could get valuable ML experience for seasons to come. It cound affect the upcoming #5 draft selection.

Regarding shoring up 3B
I’ve been wondering- is the increase in offensive effectiveness that Feliz will see in Philadelphia going to be greater or smaller than the decrease in offensive effectiveness that Rowand will see in AT&T? I keep thinking that Rowand is going to be not-much-better than Feliz, and when you consider that we were loaded in the outfield (even moreso now), we really should have just kept Feliz and not signed Rowand.

I was always a fan of keeping Feliz
But I would hope Rowand will do better on OBP and AVG than Pedro.

RE: Alter the plans for the entire organization?
I hope not, at least in terms of the draft. I think you always go for the best player you can get in the draft. I hope that’s what the Giants are trying to do. If the best guy at the slot is Smoak, then you get him. He can probably play outfield. Bowker can always go back to RF. Villalona could play at first or right or left field.
Anyway, you wouldn’t base the change on three games worth of plate appearances, I’d hope. I know the current roster is a disaster, but let’s not get too hasty. If Ortmeier can clear waivers, I’d like to see him go to AAA to play every day hitting right-handed. If he can’t, Bochy could rotate Bowker between LF, RF, and 1B and get Ortmeier starts against both lefties and righties.

Wil, you're absolutely right!
I think your point is extremely important. If John Bowker can be the Giants 1B for the next 3-4 years (or even longer), that one fact changes almost everything we can reasonably expect about the near future.
1. It reduces the need to draft a 1B in the first round of this year’s draft (now we really need a 3B).
2. It gives much greater hope for the near future, offensively. Rowand and Molina won’t have to carry the offense. That, in turn, helps buoy the spirits of our long-suffering starting pitchers.
3. It creates more room in the OF for young guys to get playing time. This year we absolutely need to fish or cut bait on Fred Lewis. Ideally, we move a veteran this summer and Nate gets a full-time gig in the second half. If we begin next year with Lewis, Rowand, and Schierholtz in the OF, and Bowker at 1B, I think we might have a ML-average offense. And then if that veteran OF nets us a SS or 3B, all the better for 2009 and beyond.
John Bowker becoming a ML hitter is a HUGE development for the Giants.

this almost makes sense
Do I remember reading that Ortmeier had never played 1B anywhere? I still can’t believe they just threw a glove at him last year and sent him out. I also hope that this means they’re not just giving up on Ort entirely, yet. And we’ll see about Bowker after half a season or so. That’s how long Winn looked like Jesus and how long Niekro batted well.
I love Omar, but if he can’t field (and his range had already of course become limited) what business does he have playing SS? If he can’t fill in at 2B or 3B then he’s just another waste of a roster spot, especially if his knee keeps him from hitting better than he did last season. Maybe this article is really saying that instead of trading for a washed-up LH 1B the deal will be for a washed-up SS.

Platoon crazy
Can Bochy and Sabean handle having a young player face righty and lefty pitching? It seems to me, that taking the bat out of a players hands for a season or two in their twenties, might hamper their development against a handiness of pitcher. Not seeing any left handed pitchers for a year and half, might make it that much harder to actually see the ball, when the player finally faces a left handed pitcher, especially with the deceptive motion that most major leaguers pitchers strive for.

At this point, it's guaranteed.
He has to play in 140 games for it to vest. There are 148 games left on the schedule, so even if he was ready to go tomorrow, there’s no way he rests only 8 games the rest of the season. And clearly he’s not ready to go tomorrow.

Anyone feel
like this is Barry’s knee circa 2005 all over again? I have a feeling Omar may not make it back at all, and that would be sad. He may have lost a step last season, but he was still a pleasure to watch in the field.

I loved BLB, and I love Omar
but it’s not even remotely similar in my eyes. Barry was the franchise, while Omar isn’t and never woulda been. The impact isn’t nearly the same.

I don’t think he was implying that Omar is as valauble as BLB. It seemed he was implying that Omar’s knee will degenerate to the point where he can no longer be effective defensively. Since Omar’s value is his defense, his drop in contribution would be dramatic.

Bowker @ 1b
Or wherever he can get Atbats is fine with me. Even if he doesn’t turn out to be a long term solution @ 1b, getting him ML atbats while ALSO getting someone else ML atbats in RF would be a positive.
I’m not ready to give up on ORT yet tho. He seems to be doing pretty well @ the plate since switching to righty only.

In Fact
In the last 7 days, Ort is hitting .375 w/ a .500 OBP and an OPS > 1.000
Now, that’s a small sample size to say the least, but it’s certainly good news and a good response to no longer being a switch hitter. I’m surprised more people are not talking about this…

Here is rotoworld’s fantasy take on Bowker. It’s a little long, but an interesting read. Check out his numbers on the road last year…
John Bowker – OF/1B Giants – No big names were called up in the NL this week, but Bowker is one player I’ve been intrigued with for awhile and I think is well worth watching. A third-rounder out of Long Beach State University in 2004, Bowker was considered to have a good but inconsistent swing that lead to very mediocre results in college. He went on to have a nice debut in the low minors after signing, but two seasons at High-A San Jose in 2005 and 2006 were big disappointments with little improvement. The Giants moved Bowker up to Double-A in 2007 anyway, and the 6’2” left-hander responded with an incredible .307/.363/.523 line that included 35 doubles, six triples, and 22 homers. Perhaps that line doesn’t look “incredible”, but once you adjust for the fact that he was playing at one of the worst parks for power hitters in the minors (Dodd Stadium) it does look quite nice. His line away from Dodd Stadium was .345/.397/.629, further cementing his season as an outstanding one.
I wrote about Bowker after attending last year’s Eastern League All-Star Game, highlighting how the now 24 year-old had a quick swing that generated plenty of power. That power has been evident so far with the Giants, as Bowker has smacked a homer in each of his first two games. Since Bowker also has solid plate discipline and is adept at handling left-handed pitchers, he could prove to be a real sleeper for those in NL-only leagues. That the Giants are again working him out at first base after doing so this spring is encouraging, as first is a big position of need for the Giants both now and in the future (until Angel Villalona is ready). If Bowker can keep hitting, and I like his chances, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him claim the first base job and perform admirably while doing so. A .270-15-60 season with 450+ at-bats isn’t out of the question.
Recommendation: Go the extra dollar for him in NL-only one-year and keeper leagues; only those in very deep mixed leagues should monitor.
Adopted Giant Brian Wilson: One of the few reasons to watch this year.

I believe Bowker also hit something like .331 against LHP last year, which is very encouraging. It’s good to see that he’s not just a platoon player- at least not at this point in time.
He definitely has a tendency to pull at times, but he’s also shown that he can hit some to the opposite field. That opposite field sac fly off Ron Villone ( someone correct me if I’m wrong) the other day was close to the warning track, IIRC.

He's demonstrated some monster power and an ability to make contact.
And that usually doesn’t just go away. The question @ this point I belive will be how does he adjust once Major league pitchers have a scouting report on him.

Pedro Feliz, for example
Also has pretty huge power. If you didn’t know better and just threw him fastballs you would be doing the pitcher neck-jerk pretty often. However, if you know his weaknesses and propensity to offer @ breaking pitches… he turns out to be a fairly easy out.

Why not?
When you sign a non-first-round pick such as John Bowker, making his most likely job if he indeed reaches the major leagues that of a utility player, why wouldn’t you have him continue developing skills at any position he had played—and perhaps even be looking for NEW positions to teach him (although those are clearly limited with a lefty)?
Why do the Giants show so little imagination?
