minor lines, 4/14/08
AAA: Fresno lost to Tucson 9-3
(allowing 6 runs in 8th inning)
Fresno: 1B Brett Harper: 1 for 2, HBP, SO
Fresno: 3B-1B Scott McClain: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SO
Fresno: RHP Matt Palmer: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K--2 HB
Fresno: RHP Billy Sadler: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Fresno: RHP Kevin Gryboski: 0.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB
Harper and McClain, the two minor league veterans, were the only Grizzlies to reach base twice.
A fine start for Palmer, perhaps even a career high in strikeouts. He also had an 8/2 GO/FO line, although he was not in the strike too much with 53 of 94 pitches for strikes. Sadler threw 8 of 11 pitches for strikes in a perfect 7th inning before Gryboski had the kind of 8th inning that sometimes leads to a minor league veteran's subsequent release.
AA: Connecticut lost to Portland 5-4 (11 innings)
Connecticut: RF-LF Carlos Sosa: 1 for 2, 3 BB
Connecticut: C Adam Witter: 2 for 4, 2 SO
Connecticut: RHP Adam Cowart: 3.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Connecticut: RHP Steve Palazzolo: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K
Connecticut: RHP Kelvin Pichardo: 2.0 IP, 1 K
Connecticut: RHP Osiris Matos: 3.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K--1 HB
Connecticut: RHP Justin Hedrick: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K--1 WP
Portland: RHP Justin Masterson: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB< 3 K
Sosa reached base four times, improving his season line to .323/.417/.452 in 31 AB. Witter's first multi-hit game of the season raised his AVG to .233.
Cowart had perhaps the shortest start of his pro career as he allowed more hits in this start than in his previous two starts combined. Palazzolo, Pichardo and Matos combined for seven scoreless innings in relief while allowing just one hit before Hedrick suffered a walk-off loss for the second consecutive day. The Red Sox' Masterson had an effective start but not nearly as dominant as his last start against the Defenders.
A+: San Jose defeated Stockton 4-2
San Jose: C Pablo Sandoval: 1 for 4, HR, 2 SO
San Jose: CF Tyler Graham: 2 for 3, 2 SB
San Jose: RHP Kevin Pucetas: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
San Jose: RHP Steven Edlefsen: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
San Jose: RHP Taylor Wilding: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Stockton: RHP Henry Rodriguez: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K--1 HR, 1 HB, 2 WP
Sandoval went deep for the third time this year, leading off the second inning with a solo shot. Graham was the only Giant to reach base. He also had his 3rd and 4th steals.
Pucetas collected his second win of the season. Edlefsen and Wilding contributed scoreless relief, including Wilding's first save. The A's hard-throwing Rodriguez is one of several notable prospects in Stockton's very talented starting roation. His ERA slipped up to 1.59, and 7 K is the fewest strikeouts in any of his three starts this year. So far this year he has 9 H, 5 BB and 23 K in 17.0 IP.
A-: Augusta defeated Lexington 2-1
Augusta: 2B Brock Bond: 2 for 4
Augusta: RF James Simmons: 2 for 3
Augusta: LHP Craig Clark: 5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K--1 HR
Augusta: RHP Dan Turpen: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
With two singles each, as well as one RBI each, Brock and Simmons were the only two GreenJackets to reach base twice, raising their respective AVGs to .370 and .256.
Clark, the 14th round pick a year ago, dominated after allowing a HR to the first batter he faced. He retired 15 of the next 16 batters, although he did have just two ground ball outs. By contrast, Turpen induced three ground ball outs as he picked up his second save and maintained his 0.00 ERA.

Thanks for the great summary!
I’m starting to start to get excited about Palazzolo. I even just spelled his name correctly without checking.

still dont get the filler in fresno
we have lots of kids who coulda skipped aa and gone to the grizzlies…but grybowski gets a spot….the only old guy i like on that team is mcclain, cuz he has a great story, and shoot, i wish he would get the call so we could cut ritchie

Agreed
I understand the filler when there aren’t suitable replacements, or if they’re interesting filler, but not when there are better candidates being held back. Why have Grybowski at Fresno & make Hedrick & Matos repeat AA?

Free the All-Father!
Matos sporting a 0.0 ERA and a sub-1.0 WHIP this season through his first 7 2/3 innings.
2008: My previous assessment may have been overly optimistic.

Entertainment v. Prospects
I think the Giants are under some pressure to field an entertaining team in Fresno as well as develop the young talent. The Grizzlies had a rather long stretch of pretty weak teams on the field due to the Giants philosophy of dealing prospects for veterans to surround Bonds with. A few seasons of this is understood but after the Grizzlies were below .500 for five or six years the Grizzlies ownership began complaining and after some strong hints at not reupping with the Giants organization after their agreement was up it has seemed like the Giants were doing more to help field a fun and winning team in Fresno. The Giants signed Scott McClain who was the MVP in the PCL the previous year with Sacramento and he has become a crowd favorite in his two plus seasons in Fresno. The Giants have sent former stars to do autograph sessions ( Cepeda, Marichal, Perry and now Will Clark this year.

Dan Turpen
He has produced last season and early this season. Does the organization have him playing at a low level too low for his talent? Same for Patterson.

With Turpen, he’s done well both last season and this season, but Paterson had a poor year in S-K. Either way, it’s going to take more than five games to conclude who’s better than what level.

Wish SF organization would push some of its college draftees a little more. Dan Turpen comes from college baseball champion Oregon State where he was a starting pitcher.

So was Paterson
Turpen and Paterson have been teammates since they were little kids.

Brock Bond may not be getting much respect, considering the position he plays and the top prospect (with a 9-game hitting streak) he’s playing alongside. But Bond has five multi-hit games already, and has walked three times with just one strikeout in 27 at-bats. And he’s batting .429 with runners on base, and .500 with RISP.
He’s a bit of a sleeper prospect at this point, I think.

Brock Bond
I agree that Bond is an interesting sleeper pick. He’s having to work to get in the side, with the other options around in the lower minors, but has done well so far, often in the DH role. What’s his defense like at 2B?

Solid. Not great, not horrible.
For his sake, he may want to do all he can to move to third or the outfield, considering the list of middle infielders that could potentially block him at second.

I love Bond
He’s one of those rare Giants prospects that can take a walk. Plus he can actually hit to go with it!

As a surprising aside, EME had 2 outfield assists for Connecticut!

nice bit of info, that McClain started the game playing third. omigosh, they have a backup plan if Castillo runs gamily into a fence or something.
BTW, Castillo is erratic at third, esp. his habit of diving for balls that Bocock can get easily. Maybe he used to play with lousy shortstops.

Thomas Neal MIA
Anyone know why Thomas Neal has been out of Augusta’s lineup the past week? I dread the thought that it’s his shoulder again given how well he was hitting.
