I assume Boch wants a veteran lineup to face the Big Ugly rather than expose our tender rooks to his terror.

Senor Smoke

Jonathan Sanchez goes for his third start of the season. In his first outing he laid an egg at Milwaukee. In his second start at home vs the Padres he flashed some brilliance. Which Sanchez will show up tonight vs the mashing DBacks? It could go a long way in his development.

Somebody's gotta say it: I approve of Bochy's lineup choices tonight. I don't want Bowker and Lewis to have to deal with one of the toughest lefties in the history of the game. Might mess up the roll they're on.

by rxmeister on Apr 14, 2008 6:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Check out his k/w ratio from last year; he's still pretty dominant. More to the point, he's always been considered to be especially tough on lefties because of his size and his delivery. Even if the pitches are more hittable, the size and delivery haven't changed.

by Evan on Apr 14, 2008 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

even if randy johnson is sharp tonight

they'll pull him after 6 innings. their skip wont let him go into the late innings for his first game. he's like 58 years old.

Challenge

Why not? So Bowker will never learn what that's like? So he'll never get the chance to hit lefty pitching? Because we're so paternal and patronizing that we think his psyche couldn't handle not excelling against a hard-throwing lefty, as if he couldn't already understand that?

I'm all for taking care of young guys, but keeping them trapped in the erroneous uterus -- that's right, I said 'uterus' -- of unnecessary psychological pampering is silly.

no way he could know

but oversliding would:

1 - if he someone prevents the throw he could be called out for interference

or

2 - if they make an error, they have a greater chance of correcting it by tagging him out for being off the base

just a bad play IMO. he's out either way. there is no benefit to not making a proper slide. he should have seen how far off the bag the guy was and realized that he wasn't likely to get him at 2nd anyway.
