minor wrapup april 12
will do a quick summary for you starving prospect hounds
Fresno wins 3-2. Pitchers duel between Max Scherzer of Tucson and Victor Santos, who went 6 innings, just 3 hits. Chulk chucked 2 scoreless, and told the Fresno Bee he is headed to SF, did not mention mode of transport. Fortunato allows a run but gets the win, Hinshaw the save. Wald hits a pinch hit homer. Good baserunning by Horwitz who scores the winning run on a WP by Coutlangus. With the game on the line, Horwitz pinch hit for leadoff guy TImpner, then Burris bloops a single.
Defenders win 4-3. Joe Martinez allows just 4 hits and 1 run for 5 innings, then allows 2 hits in the 6th and is pulled for Waddell. Jason goes 2 and 2/3, allowing 3 hits but credited with a blown save and 2/5 GO/AO, Ronnie Ray finishes the 8th and gets the win, Romo the save. A Klink double in the 9th the winning hit. EME homered. Antoan singles, steals second and third, scores on a Ishi grounder. Denker has 2 hits, up to 214. Maroul hits fifth, at 083. Defense turns 3 DPs, Rosario at short.
San Jose over Bakersfield 5 to 1 on a combined 5 hitter--English goes 5 plus; Shaver 2 plus hitless; Whitaker the 9th hitless. Graham 2 hits; Pablito a 2 RBI single; Downs steals once and is caught once; McBryde a steal; Felmy, Rohlinger and D'Alessio all K twice. Sloppy D by Bakersfield.
Augusta wins 5-3 at Lexington. MadBum goes 5, no walks, 4 Ks, 4 hits, 2 runs, not bad for a young guy. Maday and Runzler each get 3 Ks in 1.2 innings, Otero closes. Augusta starts with a bang, scoring 3 on a Corona single, Noonan triple, and Angel V double, plus an error. In the second, a Simmons bunt single and a Noonan double scores another. According to milb, Corona plays short, Baker second, and Noonan left.

So Chulk is coming back to The City - who gets sent packing - Hennessey? Is Alex Hinshaw a ML prospect? SF could use another LH relief pitcher. EME finally breaking out the lumber. When does Romo get his Fresno call up? I read the Augusta boxscore and was surprised to see Nooner playing LF, however, when I listened to the game he was back at his usual position at 2B and the boxscore was incorrect. Bmgarner had a nice second start.

Hinshaw
I think Hinshaw is definitely a ML prospect. I saw his season debut in Portland and he looked really good. His fastball was at 93 on the gun that is typically a couple mph low. For comparison Misch in the same game was at 86-87 with his FB. With a good fasball and his improved command from last year and so far this year he should be a prospect.
Brett Pill - Lord of the double.

Alex in Fresno
Alex pitched very well in Fresno last night. His fastball ranged between 88 and 93 and he had some movement with it. His one curve was a sweet 74 MPH that dropped in for a strike. He had a 12 pitch inning that resulted in a ground out, strike out and pop up.

San Jose Giants
I was waiting until the new minor lines post went up to post observations from the SJ Giants game last night, but I can do it here too.
First the funny, irrelevant stuff. Pablo Sandoval is a funny guy. He was shooting baseballs into the ball cart thing basketball style during BP. Then he pushed the ball cart thing around the field going "vroom vroom."
I was in San Jose to speak to Tim Alderson. I asked him for the straight dope on his repertoire, and he tells me he throws two fastballs--a four seam and a two seam, the curve, and the change. So there ya go, four pitches and just 19 years old.
As for the game, three Giants pitchers worked in the game. Jesse English started the game and his velocity was around 84-87 for his fastball and he was around 71 with his offspeed stuff. The speed gun wasn't on for the home half of the 3rd inning so I missed what he was throwing then. Ryan Shaver and Craig Whitaker pitched in relief. Shaver had similar velocity to English but was throwing his offspeed stuff around 76-79. Whitaker threw harder than both pitchers at 90-91.
Mike Mooney was a late scratch in the lineup. Mike McBryde played and reached base three times, a hit and two fielder's choice(s?). McBryde also stole a base. He is as fast as advertised. The whole Giants team put the pressure on in the running game. Lots of hit and run plays, hitting behind the runners, pickoff throws, and the like.
Sharlon Schoop did not play in the game. Instead Juan Ciriaco played at short. Ciriaco is a rule V guy from 2007 and has done almost nothing in previous minor league seasons. His highest level of play was in the Southern League with the San Diego organzation.
Pablito started at first base for the Giants. I watched him taking grounders at first during BP. He moved pretty well around the bag. Pablito also made some good plays in the game. He can stretch like a first baseman. He runs well, an unexpected observation. He even stole a base. There was a minor collision at first base where the Bakersfield runner ran into Sandoval, and Sandoval held his wrist. The trainer came out to look at the wrist but Sandoval stayed in the game. Since Sandoval had the wrist injury earlier in the week we were concerned that he hurt himself again.
Looks like the little Gs might be going with Sarmiento at catcher and Pablito at first now. I have to say, not a bad configuration.

It is hard to believe how young Big V is - he is TWO years younger than Tim Alderson. I do like the versatlity of Pablito and his enthusiasm ranks right up there with Tommy Lasagna. Pablito has played 3B, C and now adding some 1B to his game. And he also is a switch-hitter.

TimA had some glowing praise for AnVil when we spoke.

I think Pablo will still see more action behind the plate. The Giants seem to like Pill, and there's D'alassio. Sandoval has always played some at 1st (and I believe some 3rd) but has always returned to catching.

D'alessio has been playing DH a lot so far this season. He was DH last night too.

TimA is friendly and accessible, but gave some fairly generic answers. He's a noob, so I forgive him for it. He did tell me he ate his raisin bran for breakfast and we laughed about that a bit.
I had my little leatherbound notebook (a gift from the Mayor of 311), my tape recorder, my camera, my scorecards. I planned my outfit two weeks ahead, down to the jewelry. I was prepared.

Please, please, please tell me there's a Crash Davis on the team feeding him what to say.

Wait a second, there is...
