The best game you've been to

My wife and I decided on the spur of the moment to go to today's game. It certainly had its highlights, and it was certainly dramatic, but I just left terribly annoyed. Annoyed at Can's gem and Bowker's great debut being wasted, annoyed at our bullpen, annoyed that, by the end, the drunken Cardinals fans were drowning out the morbidly depressed Giants fans in our section, annoyed that we're 4-8, annoyed that 4-8 is actually better that I thought our record would've been at this point, annoyed at Sabean for giving us this trainwreck and getting a contract extension for it.

So, I want to hear about GOOD games you've attended in person. Specifically, the best one.

For me, it came back in 1989. It was Dave Dravecky' comeback game from cancer. No, not the one everyone remembers, where he collapsed and broke his arm - that one was in Montreal. Before that, he made a great start in San Francisco against the Reds. He went eight strong innings, as I recall - only gave up a run or two - and he got the win. And there was just a great electricity at the ballpark - the fans were behind Dravecky as strongly as it was possible for a crowd to be. I was only nine then, and it was really just a magical day that went exactly how every Giants fan wanted it to go.

I have two. First, the Brian Johnson game. Sat in the upper deck in left, got on the Jumbotron in the 10th dancing like an idiot. Easily the loudest I ever heard the Stick in person.

Second, Giants 16, Angels 4. I walked out of the Bell thinking we were gonna be world champs.

also, my first ever Giants game was Game 4 of the 1989 Series. I was 2.

Don't kill me.

My favorite game I've been to recently was the one last year at the Coliseum when Marco Scutaro hit the foul pole to walk off on Mariano Rivera.

(yes, I'm a... fan of both teams!!!!)

If you haven't banned me yet, then I'll say that my favorite Giants game was back in the (presumably) late 80s, when Tommy Herr, at the time a Philly and former All-Star, hit a foul ball right into my dad's hands at Candlestick. I later got the ball autographed, and had a shrine next to his All-Star baseball card. He soon became a Giant, so that was awesome!

I was also at the one where Bonds hit 715

I gave a message to my wife on the Jumbotron that day (scheduled in advance, so happy happy coincidence), received an awesome Omar bobblehead, and brought home a bunch of streamers and stuff, getting a special Bonds commemorative pin late. That was a good game too, even though we lost. My wife's family was there. It was a pretty cool day.

(please, before anyone gives me the jumbotron smacktalk, it's not like I did the wave)

I was at that game

with my poor, 8-3/4 , month pregnant wife. We were both VERY annoyed at the kids sitting behind us that ripped the heads off the Omar bobblehead. I vowed my daugher would NEVER treat a bobblehead so poorly...

Ripping heads of bobblehead dolls calls for a beating. Damn. Don't kids have any respect these days?

Clincher

I saw the clinching game when Bonds jumped on the top of the dugout and was doing fist pumps and high fives to the crowd.

I'm not so sure about this new layout.......

2000 clincher

Yeah, that was a good one. First year in the new park, "Who Let the Dogs Out" was peaking, and we were in the front row in center field. The whole team took a trip around the warning track and Livan sprayed me with champagne.

The WBC semi final game where Japan defeated Korea. I was about 20 rows behind the first base dugout for the three games of the semis and finals. All three games were outstanding, but that game where Japan beat Korea after they lost twice to Korea in the tournament, was amazing. Uehara Koji pitched for Japan in that game. He's pretty good.

The electricity in the stadium was unlike anything I've ever felt. Fans for both teams were loud. Synronized cheers. Flags everywhere. It rained that night and there was an hour long delay, but nobody went anywhere.

Now that the first round venues for the 2009 event have been announced, I'm making plans. I'm leaning towards pool play in Puerto Rico. Tokyo, Toronto, and Mexico City are the other cities hosting first round play. I just have to go to this event every time it's held. There's nothing like it out there. 2006's event was the best time of my life.

June 6, 2006 sticks out in my mind. Schmidtty strikes out 16 Marlins, including 3 in the 9th with the tying run at 3B.

I was at that Dravecky game, which was pretty damn great, but I'm going to have to take a game from later that fall -- Game 5 of the 1989 NLCS. Big Daddy at his craftiest, The Thrill at his clutchest, Bedrock at his shakiest, and an NL pennant as a happy ending. Even 2 hours getting out of the auxiliary parking lot at the Stick couldn't ruin a great day at the yard.

This is/was going to be mine too.

When Will hit that single up the middle in the eighth inning, I have never hear a crowd like that. Pandemonium. So loud, and in unison. Amazing.

It depends..

This may be a long post...

It really depends on if you mean the "best" game or the "favorite" game.

As far as objective quality of the game, I would have to say Game 2 of the 2002 World Series. Yes, the Giants lost, but it was a great game. Back and forth action, Giants down five early only to come back and take the lead, only to give it up at the end. Huge bomb by Bonds at the end. Again, the Giants lost, and that sucked, but it was a very exciting game.

I also happened to be at a very interesting game last year at Yankee Stadium. 8/2/07. My wife and I are on our honeymoon, visiting some of the famous ballparks. Clemens starts and gets yanked in the second. The Yankees end up giving up 8 runs in the top of the eight inning. My wife and I are slightly dissapointed because this is our first (and only) time at Yankee Stadium, and it looks like the game is over. Not so fast. The Yankees also score 8 in the bottom of the 8th. 16 runs in the inning makes it the highest scoring second inning of all time. So, not the most exciting game, but definitely the most exciting inning. Later in the trip we saw Glavine win #300 at Wrigley.

As far as favorite Giants games, there are a couple that come to mind. I was at Game 5 of the 1989 NLCS. I was 11 at the time, and I don't think the experience will ever be matched. It was (and is) my favorite sports memory, and probably one of the top 5 moments of my life. The Giants hadn't been to the World Series since 1961, and my dad was crying like a baby. Awesome moment.

One of my other favorites was 7/24/2003. Day game on Bonds' birthday. He throws Counsell out at home for the third out in the top of the 9th, then comes up as the first batter in the bottom of the ninth and hits a walkoff. They made one of those "flipp" flip books of that moment, and I still have it to this day.

Those are the best games (and favorites) that I have been to. I am sure that I am leaving a few out.

by sunnyd100 on Apr 12, 2008 10:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

That was a great game

And Bonds home run in the 9th off Percival was as far as I've ever seen him hit one. So far, in fact, that it landed about three rows in front of us, and we had been joking before the game that we needn't have bothered to bring our gloves since our seats were practically in Fullerton.

On a side note...

I have always said that if Dusty put Shinjo at CF and Lofton at DH in game 2 (instead of Lofton in CF and Dunston at DH), we win that game and the series in 5 games. What a Dusty move.

May 24, 2000 - The Giants defeat the Expos‚ 18-0‚ as pitcher Shawn Estes hits one grand slam and narrowly misses another as he collects 5 RBIs. The game is the Giants largest shutout win in modern times breaking their previous record‚ 16-0‚ set on July 3‚ 1949‚ against the Dodgers; the previous SF record was 14-0‚ against the Reds‚ on August 23‚ 1961. Their all-time record is a 24-0 win against the Buffalo Bisons‚ on May 27‚ 1885. On the other side‚ the game was also the worst shutout loss in Expos history‚ breaking the record of 16-0‚ set against the Cardinals‚ on August 11‚ 1980.

I was fortunate enough to be at this game.

I could be wrong, but...

I think Estes is the only pitcher to hit a grand slam and pitch a shutout in the same game.

Last year

on my birthday I went to a game in our first series against the D-Backs. Cain started, went 7 innings strong, I think 8 K's. Chulk relieved and inning. B(oo)nitez closed and somehow saved. Final score: 1-0. Our lone run came from a homer off of none other than the great BLB.

Lowry pitches his first complete game shut out. Bonds hits two home runs, the second of which was part of back-to-back-to-back homers by Snow, Bonds, and Feliz. So awesome.

It's either that or the one in Philadelphia when Snow hit 3 homers. That one had bad pitching, but it was pretty damn fun.

I found the box score for the game I mentioned:
http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1989/B08100SFN1989.htm

It's odd to see it all laid out like that when it's always been a sort of mythic memory from my childhood. And actually, Dravecky didn't do quite as well as I remembered - he gave up 3 runs in 8 innings, not 1. Only 5 baserunners, though. And Will Clark hit a double - I was a huge, huge Will Clark fan, so I'm sure that was really exciting at the time, too.

Oh, and one more thing from my game -

When we were driving to the park from the East Bay, we had KNBR on, and instead of the regular pre-game show, they were doing a fundraiser for cancer research. People would call in and pledge to donate a certain amount of money if certain things happened in the game. Like, if Kevin Mitchell hits a home run, they'll donate $20. If Dravecky strikes out five, they'll donate $50. That sort of thing. Well, at the time, Pete Rose was still managing the Reds, and someone called in and said that if Rose was ejected, they'd donate $100. As I said, I was nine, and $100 seemed like an impossibly huge amount of money at the time.

And guess what? Yeah, Rose came out, argued a call, and got his ass tossed from the game. Looking at the dates, it was just two weeks later that he got kicked out of baseball for good.

Game Played on Thursday, August 21, 2003 (N) at Pacific Bell Park

ATL N 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 - 3 6 1
SF N 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 4 8 1

With Bobby Bonds on his deathbed, Barry had hit a 10th inning HR against the Braves in the first game of the series. Two nights later, I went to the game and saw

San Francisco Giants IP H R ER BB SO HR
Schmidt 8 3 0 0 1 7 0

only to have Worrell blow the 3-0 lead in the 9th (further affirming the Ortiz rule: NEVER EVER take out a pitcher who's throwing a shutout). 40K people were miserable for about 20 minutes. Then Bonds comes up in the 10th and DOES EXACTLY WHAT HE DID TWO DAYS AGO

HR: Bonds (39,10th inning off Hodges 0 on 1 out).

and as he trotted down the 3rd base line you could see the tears welling in his eyes. I've been to better games but few as instantly memorable.

I know what happened..

But not the exact game. It was a game against Pittsburgh or Philladelphia maybe....That's how I remember it a bit. My dad got some tickets just 7-8 rows above the bullpen along the left field line. Late in the innings, don't think it was a walk off but it won the game in the end, Pedro Feliz hit a home run down the left field line. Any ideas on the game? Would have been within the last few years of course since it's Feliz. I'm pretty sure I hated him at the time so it was probably while he was a starter even.

Was a memorable game for me too. I visited the AT&T press box with my buddy Rich Draper and met all the media people. I got a foul ball. Eugenio Velez appeared in the game. The Dodgers lost. It was a good day.

April 13, 2003

Fittingly enough, exactly five years ago today. I had just moved to SF and I was drinking beer at the Toronado, watching the Masters, when the Giants came on TV (a late start on ESPN). They were playing the Dodgers, Schmidt vs. Kevin Brown. It occurred to me that I could actually go to the game. So with a couple beers in me, I headed for the park and got there in the top of the 3rd. For $25 a helpful gentleman sold me a ticket in the 7th row right behind home plate, still the best seat I've ever had at the park.

Even though I arrived Dodger late, I still got my money's worth. The game went into the 12th inning. The Dodgers blew a scoring chance in the top of the inning when Hundley got thrown out trying to go first to third on a hit by LoDuca. Then in the bottom half Benard hit a GW double to score Grissom. I couldn't believe it; everyone was high-fiving in the section, with not a few of us yelling incredulously, "Marvin Benard?" It was awesome.

my first was in 71...cuz it was my first, and my dad took me...and i watched spier hit a screamer down the line for a triple, that got lost in the fog....gotta love the stick

the second was in 82....final game of the season vs the bums....bums had already eliminated the giants....morgan hits walkoff (i think it was a walkoff) to eliminate the bums...it was like winning the ws....made this 11 year old giddy...

Unfortunately mine went against the Giants. Kevin Brown (Marlins) threw a no-hitter against us (6/10/97). Would have been a perfect game except he hit Marvin Bernard with a pitch in the 8th (by that point with the Giants down big, everyone was rooting for Brown). VanLandingham took a no-hitter into the 7th (at which point he was still losing 1-0....some things about Giants baseball just don't change) before losing it completely, and the bullpen didn't do much better when they came in.

This game was also memorable for me since it was my last at Candlestick, I moved away shortly after that and came back a few years later to PacBell.
