Open Gameday Thread, 4/12

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants, Apr 12, 2008 1:05 PM PDT

No television. I can't watch television today, and it still bugs me that the game isn't televised.

We all understand the concept of sample size. There's a reason why we aren't all giddy about Brian Bocock's .359 OBP or thinking about Jack Taschner, All-Star Reliever. With just a handful of at-bats or innings pitched in the 2008 season, it's hard to make a definitive judgment about anything.

I still think it's safe to conclude that Rich Aurilia and Ray Durham are done.

This is a great opportunity for John Bowker. Clay Timpner was soooooooo overmatched and with Nate Schierholtz being a little banged up, Bowker gets the opportunity of a lifetime to show his talents. If he succeeds he could make decisions more difficult for the organization.

by wilriv21 on Apr 12, 2008 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say Timpner was soooooooo overmatched. I'd put him at sooooo overmatched at the most. I mean, there are some serious sample size issues here.

I'm not sure that's fair, but Bowker is obviously the better prospect, so it'll be interesting to see how he does, if Rowand's out for a while.

Trade Possibilities

Sabean really needs to scour the Tigers system for whatever is left there, because the Tigers bullpen is horrific.

Today's strategy for the Tigers was to leave Verlander in forever, because they have no faith in the pen. They might actually be excited about Chulk and Messenger.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Apr 12, 2008 12:37 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

possibly

though the Tigers might be more interested in Valdez. they love those power arms

by baetown415 on Apr 12, 2008 12:39 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's true. Unfortunately, most of their better prospects were drafted last year. I guess Scott Sizemore at 2B is a possibility. I would be happy with 27-year-old Ryan Rayburn, who would be the best hitter on the Giants.

Aquilino Lopez and Jason Grilli (hey, remember him?) pitched 7 of those innings, though.

They did just give up and DFA Yorman Bazardo though - he is an interesting arm and only 23 - and he would really be worth taking a flyer on.

Yabu's the obvious one, but with Chulk coming back soon, he should be gone anyway. I guess Taschner could be optioned, but he's performing too well to make that likely. Bazardo is interesting, but has poor K rates.

Tigers have emptied out the farm

With the Renteria, Cabrera and Willis deals the Tigers have pretty much gotten rid of most of their talented prospects. The Angels are also looking for some bullpen help and they had a farm full of talent to raid.

It’s not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You’re still young, that’s your fault,
There’s so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I’m happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy,
To be calm when you’ve found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you’ve got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Cain getting hit around a bit in the 7th turns out to be a blessing, given bochy in the dugout.

going all defense to try to keep the lead for Cain

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Apr 12, 2008 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kennedy's ball was so catchable...

Winn broke back on Kennedy's pop up, Lewis came in fast but had the ball clank off his glove. Giants' outfield defense is consistently horrible.

Way too early

However, if John Boy Bowker can build on his huge 2007 AA season here in 2008 it opens up many possibilities for the SF organization.

by wilriv21 on Apr 12, 2008 3:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I hope you're right, but I have the feeling that Bowker was just called up instead of Nate because they didn't want Nate rotting on the bench.

SF is in dire help for a LH power hitter. If he can play 1B we would all bow down before him.

I'm not sure I trust Merkin Valdez just yet in those types of situations. I would have went with Tyler Walker.

Glad things worked out, but taking Cain out at that point was dumb. He was only at 95 pitches, and all he needed was one out, against one of the worst hitters in the game. We burned a reliever for nothing.

by Evan on Apr 12, 2008 3:01 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He can't be one of the worst hitters in the game, because he's not on the Giants.

On second thought, the real question is why LaRussa used his pinch hitter for Schumaker rather than Izturis.
