Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?

Now that we are apparently going with more of a youth movement it appears to me that Bochy will have very little tolerance with veteran deadwood esp with regard to bullpen mediocrity. With Messenger gone, how many of you think Kline will be next? Taschner to be replaced by Threets who is out of options? Im tired of watching hours of a relatively good game( few and far between when it comes to Giants baseball) only to be destroyed by some prick who blows a game with minimal talent. Give me a Valdez,Romo,Threets who at least can be dominant with their talent over Kline,Taschner and Messenger any day of the week

Randy Messenger is twenty-six years old.
Fred Lewis, by comparison, is twenty-seven.
Erick Threets is also twenty-six years old.

True. My point however is that with Messenger you know what you going to get and that is a mediocrity with minimal talent that you consider lucky when he pitches an effective inning (certainly the same goes with Kline). Valdez and Threets  otoh, can throw hard and have decent 2nd and 3rd pitches that gives you a better feeling when they enter a game. If they can both minimize their wildness, and I know thats a bif IF, this bullpen can be a very pleasant surprise. Given the 2 alternatives i'll take the unknown over the known

Giants Bullpen: The Final Frontier
Mordy chooses adventure, and seems to be following in the glorious spaceboots of Captain James T. Kirk, who just out of cadet school, almost took a job as a security guard.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
I think everyone agrees with you about Kline, but I don't get the Messenger thing. Messenger isn't that old, and you seemed to give up on him pretty quickly. I can see you giving up on your "exciting" young pitchers pretty quickly as well, especially if they're rushed to the bigs before they're ready. As for Romo, he was very unimpressive today. Give up on him yet??

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
I too am a little puzzled by the wholesale flogging suffered around here by Messenger. I seem to remember a month or two, after the Benitez trade, where Messenger was just nails in late innings.

He got injured, came back, pitched like crap. Maybe he's still not quite right. I think the organization has moderately high hopes for him.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
Yeah I remember last year when he got here he had like a 2.20 era.  He also managed to continue it for a month or so with us too.  Then he went down a bad stretch for a while, which led to him punching the equipment cart for some reason.  And by the time he came back from the injury that ensued, the minor league season had ended, so he couldn't get any rehab games in before he came back to the majors, so he sucked quite terribly.  I wouldn't give up on him just yet; I'd just not regard him that highly because he probably won't be that good.  And I thought it was histerical that he contacted his agent about the possibility of being released when he got sent down...

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
Guy has a high opinion of himself. Nothing wrong with that.

Messenger no doubt thinks he's a major leaguer and will catch on somewhere in the bigs.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
Randy's problem is that he lacks the appropriate amount of warrior sprites.

I'm thinking he prolly got sent down because

  1.  He's prolly not a 100%, and that MILB is prolly the best place to see if he can get back to that level.
  2.  He strikes me as maybe partly smart ass, and just doesn't have enough talent without being 100 percent to put up with in the club house maybe. Just speculation.
  3. The other factors such as some of the other guys being just as effective.
  4. The Giants consider him to be nothing more than what he was; a throw in to get rid of Blowmeatiz. Time for a clean slate?
  5. I've expended way more energy opining on something about as interesting and relevant as Ball Dude's favorite comic strip.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
ERA for a relief pitcher means absolutely nothing! There was a time when Benitez had a really shiny sub-3 ERA here and like 10 blown saves to show for it!

Last year, even when he appeared to be pitching well, Messenger's peripherals were perfectly in line with his career averages - which aren't very good. His WHIP last year was actually a major league best for him at an uninspiring 1.52 (his career minor league WHIP, to get away from sample size, is a whopping 1.50). He doesn't get a lot of strikeouts and he gives up too many walks to get away from it. When Messenger ended up struggling last year, that wasn't him having a rough stretch, that was him having a normal stretch. What success he had was almost entirely the circumstance of luck and probably a fair amount of inherited runners allowed. He's not very good, and over his career he's been very very consistent about being not very good.

When Sabean got him from the Marlins, he bought Messenger at his peak value because the ERA was oooh shiny with otherwise equal peripherals. His biggest achievement has been that he's not as worthless as Benitez, making the trade overall a plus for us.

He also catches flack because he took himself out of the game for weeks by the power of sheer stupidity, he looks like an Ogre, and he wears his cap with an off-center, flat brim.

Exactly.

While not technically, geographically-speaking, within the region, the natives try so hard to fake it that you might think they were from the desired locale.

I see your facts and raise you a Titanic fiction
As was the case with Noah and even Timmy Worrell, us guys don't give a hoot about peripherals when the job gets done.

I realize that Messenger at times was channeling the latter years of Rod Beck when he would walk the bases drunk and get out of it with a circus double play by a defensive miracle.

But in the boxscore, they put up a gratifying "H" next to yer name, whether you instrinsically deserve one or not.

Re: I see your facts and raise you a Titanic ficti
At the end of the day, he blew 4 saves to record those 5 holds in SF.

Also, at the end of the day, you can have an ERA in the fives and still protect a 2 run lead the majority of the time.

Fool me seven times, shame on you. Fool me eight or more times, shame on me.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
Very true, but I remember when he first came here he started off quite nicely.  The only thing that was bad about him his first month here was that he never struck anybody out.  And after that, it was exactly like his old self.  I'm not saying I love him; I think he might just be the most retarted guy in all of baseball just for the equipment cart thing.  And yes he does look like an ogre, and yes he does look like a wigger with the off center cap.  I'm just saying he's not quite as bad as some of the other people on our team last year and that at least some of the bad end he had from last year wasn't entirely his fault.  He's got more talent than Taschner, Atchison, and Munter, so I can at least appreciate that about him.  And Sabean probably (hopefully) didn't really care that he got Messenger in the first place; he was just trying to toss B(oo)nitez.  And also in Messenger's defense, he was a lot better than anything I was hoping for in trading B(oo)nitez.

Randy Messenger is not retarted. Just goofy.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
I'm pretty much in agreement with this. I like Messenger for being way more than we should have gotten for Benitez, but I recognize he's not a very useful player. I also agree that on the scale of not very useful players, he's much more useful than Kline, Munter, or Atchison (though I'm not quite willing to say Taschner, who has a serious nitch if we'd just utilize it). I rag on him for not being very good, but if I could only rag on one of these guys, it wouldn't be him by a longshot.

Sabean and Co. working late into the nite
Would not be surprised if Sabean and Bochy were trying to determine a way to fill the now 12-man rotation with Messers Valdez, Threets and Misch. Now it is up to each pitcher to earn their way north.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
I would be willing to part with Threets and was glad to see Messenger get sent down.  I would like to see the Giants shed Kline, and I am highly intrigued with Merkin Valdez, who seems to have recovered better and especially more quickly from Tommy John surgery than I expected.

I would have little problem trading Brad Hennessey to open up a spot for Perkin' Merkin.  Hennessey should have some trade value -- at least enough to bring a pretty good Class A level prospect who is young and could grow up by the time the Giants become good again.
