Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
Now that we are apparently going with more of a youth movement it appears to me that Bochy will have very little tolerance with veteran deadwood esp with regard to bullpen mediocrity. With Messenger gone, how many of you think Kline will be next? Taschner to be replaced by Threets who is out of options? Im tired of watching hours of a relatively good game( few and far between when it comes to Giants baseball) only to be destroyed by some prick who blows a game with minimal talent. Give me a Valdez,Romo,Threets who at least can be dominant with their talent over Kline,Taschner and Messenger any day of the week

Fred Lewis, by comparison, is twenty-seven.
Erick Threets is also twenty-six years old.

True. My point however is that with Messenger you know what you going to get and that is a mediocrity with minimal talent that you consider lucky when he pitches an effective inning (certainly the same goes with Kline). Valdez and Threets otoh, can throw hard and have decent 2nd and 3rd pitches that gives you a better feeling when they enter a game. If they can both minimize their wildness, and I know thats a bif IF, this bullpen can be a very pleasant surprise. Given the 2 alternatives i'll take the unknown over the known

He got injured, came back, pitched like crap. Maybe he's still not quite right. I think the organization has moderately high hopes for him.

Messenger no doubt thinks he's a major leaguer and will catch on somewhere in the bigs.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
I'm thinking he prolly got sent down because
- He's prolly not a 100%, and that MILB is prolly the best place to see if he can get back to that level.
- He strikes me as maybe partly smart ass, and just doesn't have enough talent without being 100 percent to put up with in the club house maybe. Just speculation.
- The other factors such as some of the other guys being just as effective.
- The Giants consider him to be nothing more than what he was; a throw in to get rid of Blowmeatiz. Time for a clean slate?
- I've expended way more energy opining on something about as interesting and relevant as Ball Dude's favorite comic strip.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
Last year, even when he appeared to be pitching well, Messenger's peripherals were perfectly in line with his career averages - which aren't very good. His WHIP last year was actually a major league best for him at an uninspiring 1.52 (his career minor league WHIP, to get away from sample size, is a whopping 1.50). He doesn't get a lot of strikeouts and he gives up too many walks to get away from it. When Messenger ended up struggling last year, that wasn't him having a rough stretch, that was him having a normal stretch. What success he had was almost entirely the circumstance of luck and probably a fair amount of inherited runners allowed. He's not very good, and over his career he's been very very consistent about being not very good.
When Sabean got him from the Marlins, he bought Messenger at his peak value because the ERA was oooh shiny with otherwise equal peripherals. His biggest achievement has been that he's not as worthless as Benitez, making the trade overall a plus for us.
He also catches flack because he took himself out of the game for weeks by the power of sheer stupidity, he looks like an Ogre, and he wears his cap with an off-center, flat brim.

Reno
Reno:Northern California::Fresno:Southern California
While not technically, geographically-speaking, within the region, the natives try so hard to fake it that you might think they were from the desired locale.

I see your facts and raise you a Titanic fiction
I realize that Messenger at times was channeling the latter years of Rod Beck when he would walk the bases drunk and get out of it with a circus double play by a defensive miracle.
But in the boxscore, they put up a gratifying "H" next to yer name, whether you instrinsically deserve one or not.

Also, at the end of the day, you can have an ERA in the fives and still protect a 2 run lead the majority of the time.

Re: Messenger demoted,Steve Kline /Taschner next?
I would have little problem trading Brad Hennessey to open up a spot for Perkin' Merkin. Hennessey should have some trade value -- at least enough to bring a pretty good Class A level prospect who is young and could grow up by the time the Giants become good again.
