Wilson Betemit

I tend to lurk here and post randomly but I wonder why so little has been discussed of Wilson Betemit. He is as blocked as one player can be, and he would have value to the giants based on his career OPS figures.
Is it crazy to think the Giants could/should make a deal for this guy?
Obviously the injury situation in our rotation doesn't help our chances of putting together a strong package, but I wonder if we might be able to steal him with a Misch/Fred lewis type package. Maybe I am crazy, but of all the 3B options I have seen discussed here, Betemit's name has been absent.

Re: Wilson Betemit
He's out of options, and the Yankees do have Morgan Ensberg. I think it completely reasonable that one of them doesn't make the team and the Giants are able to make a deal. Except that they probably won't, because the risk is too low. Does anyone know how his defense is at third? He came up as a shortstop...

Defense
While with the Dodgers his defense was mediocre. He seemed more like a platoon player.

Re: Defense
Platoon players can hit against one type of pitcher... which is one more type than what the current "candidates" can hit (Omar included).

Re: Wilson Betemit
I'd be on board with aquiring Betemit.
Matt Cain, cleanup hitter or starting pitcher?

Re: Wilson Betemit
Betemit has been a disappointment, but if he's not too expensive I would think he would be a great risk to take -- and still young.

Re: Wilson Betemit
I'd like it, but I think Betemit could still command some value, like a Sanchez, which would be tough to swallow. I'd give up Hennessey and something easily.

Re: Wilson Betemit
I'm not sure, but I'm guessing he had a Toe-Knee Arm(and-)Ass.  In fact, I would bet a might bit on it, Wilson.

Wilson?  Wilson?  Are you there my dear friend, Dr. Wilson?

Who's on first?

Re: Wilson Betemit
It's actually a decent idea -- so Sabean will try something else.

Re: Wilson Betemit
That might work actually.  I'd reaaally like this.  The Yanks have no use for him besides as a backup so he'd probably come pretty cheap.  He's also still somewhat of a prospect, actually younger than most of ours.  And last year he was on pace for a 20 homer season but he got no playing time behind A-rod after he got traded to the Yanks.  He could also fill in for Vizquel at SS until he comes back, when he could then shift over to 3B.  And Jesus Christ on a cracker did he seriously get signed as a freakin 15-year-old?

Re: Wilson Betemit
I personally like the idea as well.  Not only is he relatively young and of some quality, but I believe he can play a variety of infield positions, which can give us some options and flexibility in terms of allowing a young player to develop.  I say go for it, even if Sanchez is the asking price.

Re: Wilson Betemit
Are the Yanks planning on using him as Jeter's backup? Their website's depth chart has him as the only backup at 3rd and ss, and also backing up first. He'd be a great choice at SS... where he can disappoint/be inconsistent and all that crap but still be league average or better. He's got 15-20 HR power, plays good defense all over the infield, and will be 26. Won't happen.

Re: Wilson Betemit
Betemit would probably be a stop-gap third baseman just like he's been everywhere else. His glove is nothing special at 3b. He has very limited major-league playing experience at ss. On the plus side: he's a switch-hitter; only 26; has a pretty good bat with power...especially off the bench. He contributes nothing to team speed. Unless the Giants can trade an aging veteran for him...forget it!

Re: Wilson Betemit
There's certainly no place for young bats with good power on this team!

Re: Wilson Betemit
The only thing is what do we do with Rich Aurilia?

by Big Daddy J on Mar 8, 2008 1:23 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Re: Wilson Betemit
Aurilia could be a trade throw-in and would  be a good fit in Washington with the Nationals spelling their infield: 1b Dmitri Young; 2b Rafael Belliard; ss Christian Guzman--veterans like himself.  Along with Kline/Taschner, Hennessey/Messenger,etc. the Giants might package enough parts together to do a deal with the Nationals.  Then again, it would make too much sense.   At one time the Yankees supposedly expressed interest in Aurilia. Betemit would probably rather bounce up-down from Columbus and go to the play-offs with the Yanks by signing a minor-league deal.  Why embarrass himself with a glove in SF when he can possibly pinch-hit or DH his way to a World Series.  Ditto Konerko of the White Sox. Now, look for the Dodgers (Garciaparra) and Athletics (Chavez) to beat the Giants to the 3b acquisition trading-punch.  Don't hold your breath until Coletti trades his 3b phenom to the Giants because Nomar's there...

Re: Wilson Betemit
I don't think Nomar will be out that long, so I don't think the Dodgers will run out and get a third baseman because Nomar was hit by a pitch. As for the A's why would they make a trade for a third baseman when they are conceding the season anyway?? Also, judging by the low price the Giants are apparently offering for Crede, I get the impression they are also conceding they are going nowhere and will only acquire a third baseman if he comes dirt free, with the Giants pretty much only assuming the salary.
Randy Messenger's biggest fan, although I will drop him like a hot potato when we get Joe Crede

Re: Wilson Betemit
Not only are the A's in a rebuilding year, they have Jack Hannahan, who despite being, you know, not a 15 year veteran, is actually better than Joe Crede or Wilson Betemit.

Re: Wilson Betemit
Jack Hannahan sucks what are you smoking?  He's like Dan Ortmeier but at 3B.  I'd much rather have Betemit than him.  Betemit's already better and he's younger.

Re: Wilson Betemit
Sabean is probably thinking.....can he play CF?
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

Re: Wilson Betemit
Wilson Beat-the-Meat will make an awesome left side of the infield with Brian Bocock. The team will stink, but the jokes will be awesome.
