Open Gameday Thread 3/7

Todd Linden and the Oakland A's play against the Scrappytown Gamers in a must-win contest.

The new Baseball Prospectus annual claims that the Giants treated Linden as if he were Justin Upton. I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.

Brian Bocock
This is a great opportunity for SS Brian Bocock. If he performs well SF during this stint SF could send him to AAA rather than AA upon Vizquel's return. His defense has opened up some eyes around camp. Continued success kid.

Bocock in the batting order
If Bocock were chosen as the opening day starting shortstop, will he probably bat eighth? Or is their any chance they will bat him ninth, after the pitcher, as that is the spot with the least pressure  (not that it seems that different from eighth)? One reason I bring this up is that I have been interested by the position player bats last idea for a while. I believe Tony La Russa has done it, and that lineup simulator that is mentioned frequently on this site seems to like doing it to.

Re: Bocock in the batting order
Bocock will probably be overmatched by MLB pitching so the fewer ABs the better. Would think that Sabean is scouring waiver wires, checking players out of options and looking for trading partners to improve club. With an over 40 year old SS coming off knee surgery I can see the back-up SS getting plenty of playing time.

by wilriv21 on Mar 7, 2008 4:18 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe the Enemy is on AutoPilot
If the idea is to get the fewest official ABs for Bocock, I say put him in the 4-Hole.

Giants opponents are in a 15-year habit of walking our Cleanup Hitter.

Re: Brian Bocock
There seems to be a lot of talk about Bocock all of a sudden. Defensively, I've heard very good things, but the kid hasn't really hit anywhere and has shown pretty poor basestealing instincts. His one good year came in his second college season, and he's posted a .241/.331/.344 in the minors so far.

Linden picked up by Billy Beane, who says his "Moneyball" strategy changes over time.

And if Linden is the template, Beane has changed from coveting patient batters who can milk a walk to patient batters who can take a call strike three.

Giants, with 10 baserunners and a healthy OBP for this game, are showing with their measly one run just how wrong the Billy Beane team-building formula must be.

Meantime, Beane finds power hitters in broom closets, while the Giants jump for joy when the boxscore shows a double was hit for their side that day.
