Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?

interesting turn of events these past couple days...first we hear about white sox scouts watching lowry. now today we find out 2 giants scouts are watching dan johnson. a Johnson/Crede combo would be pretty solid, basicaally better than anything on the current roster. what do you think is traded for them?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/05/SPP8VE9CI.DTL

Johnson could draw attention from teams such as the Mets and Giants (San Francisco had two scouts at Oakland's game Wednesday), who might be looking for a first baseman, but the A's haven't been in any rush to move him because they've believed he will hit. He's out of options, so if Sweeney were to stick past mid-April, the A's would have to trade Johnson or waive him, unless they went with three outfielders plus Jack Cust or dropped down to 11 pitchers, which is unlikely.

They were probably there to watch Sweeney. This is the Giants, remember?

Although the Giants could certainly use a crooner, Bing has been gone for some time now.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
No thanks to Johnson or Crede, neither are good enough to both trading for. Better than what we have on the roster currently? Probably, but neither are good offensively, about the equivalent of having Winn & Feliz as our corner infielders, so really what's the point? We need good players, not just less terrible ones!

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
I'd rather get a look at Ortmeier full time than give up anything for Dan Johnson.

Putting Ortmeier's case for a long-term job to bed has to be worth more than Dan Johnson OPSing 750 for a 100 loss club.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
Even last season Dan Johnson's OPS was .767, and his career OPS is .764.  That's certainly not great, but it's above the .750 you cited.

Johnson batted only .247 on Balls in Play last season, and personally I think he might be more like a .265/.355/.455/.800 guy, with the potential to go even higher.  That's not great, but it's a lot better than Dan Ortmeier is likely to post.

And Johnson is only 28, less than two years older than the untested Ortmeier.  I wouldn't give up a bundle to acquire Johnson, but I would be willing to make a move that wasn't very costly to acquire him.

Dan Johnson has a chance.  Dan Ortmeier has little.  IMO.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?

Only the Giants would scout Dan Johnson instead of Nick Johnson.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
The older Nick would be nice, but wouldn't he likely cost a whole lot more to acquire?

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
I gotta agree. DJohnson isn't a horrible option here.

I guess if your criteria is "better than Ortmeier/Aurilia"

Well, it is what we're looking at here.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
I'm glad we're looking merely at anything that is better than Aurilia/Ortmeier here, since I'm sure there are many of us on the board who have been waiting for such a chance to play in the majors. :)

That was kind of mean, but given that the Giants have scored a total of two runs in their last two games, we have to get our kicks where we may.

How bout both?  Who says two Johnsons can't plug the 3-hole?

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
Why not just wait until he gets waived?  He won't suddenly make the Giants significantly more competitive.
If Sabean tries to trade for him the Giants are at risk of getting swindled out of a half dozen or so good prospects.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
If Dan Johnson were to be waived, I would lap him up in a minute.  That said, he likely wouldn't make it out of the American League.

Re: Giants scout Crede, now Johnson?
Thanks Rog,
The image of you lapping up Johnson is now burned into my skull.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Hoping tk's recovery is faster than Raj going from first to third!

It's better to be eager when lapping up Johnson.

Wow!  I said that rather poorly, didn't I?  I must have done so in my overenthusism to say something good about someone other than Tim Lincecum.  :)
