Frandsen's Days at Shortstop are over...

This is good news, although it means they are going to have to add another SS to the 40 man roster at some point.

Kevin Frandsen will not be the Giants' shortstop on Opening Day. Manager Bruce Bochy said today he has informed Frandsen, who has struggled at the position, that he will return to his natural position at second base and get some time at third.

The Giants now have three candidates to be the Opening Day shortstop: prospects Emmanuel Burriss and Brian Bocock, who played Single-A ball last season, and Ivan Ochoa, last year's shortstop at Triple-A Fresno.

Re: Frandsen's Days at Shortstop are over...
That's too bad. I was hoping Kevbo would be at least adequate defensively at SS.  Guess not.

I'd say this is going to be Brian Bocock's chance to shine.  He is the best immediate option on defense and he tends to start out hot at the plate before seeking his true level somewhere near the Mendoza line, so I expect Bocock to be our SS for the first few weeks of the season.

I'm pretty sure this happened...
Sabean: "Kevin, have you heard of being Sanchezed?"

Frandsen: "No sir; what's that?"

Sabean: "Well, it's a little term me and Ned came up with some time back. Basically, from your perspective, it means that we're going to give you every opportunity to stick with the big club, and in as many positions as possible."

Frandsen: "Uh, is that good?"

Sabean: "Oh, hell yes, son. Think of your increased value to the team if you can fill multiple rolls. Take my good buddy Joe Lefebvre; he does a little bit of this, a little bit of that - whatever it takes to help the team. You do want to help the team, don't you young man?"

Frandsen: "Oh yes sir, absolutely."

Sabean: "Terrific. I knew I could count on you. Now this here is what we call 'the tools of ignorance.' It's just a phrase, don't worry about it. This stuff is in your size, and I want you to spend some time with Bengie and Edgardo while you wear. Just get a general idea of what they do. Remember, flexibility: that's the key. Well, that and speed and defense. And above all, warrior spirit. Tell me, Kevin, can you smell my warrior spirit?"

Frandsen: "Uh...yeah, sure, sir."

Sabean: "Good boy. Now get some practice in at catcher, and remember: you're our secondbaseman of the future. But if we need you a short, or third, or catcher, or to pick up Rowand's laundry, we hope you'll have that warrior spirit."

Frandsen: "Uh...I do. Er, I will."

Sabean: "Excellent. Say, did you ever play centerfield in high school or college?"

Re: Frandsen's Days at Shortstop are over...
Not sure what this means for Durham, but according to Rosenthal Sabes is trying to make some moves...
The Giants, according to a rival executive, have informed clubs of their willingness to discuss approximately a dozen players, including major and minor leaguers. Among the veterans on the list: Ray Durham, Rich Aurilia, Randy Winn and Steve Kline. The Giants are looking for late-inning relievers, outfielders, a third baseman and backup catcher.

More Outfielders?? And why isn't Roberts on this list?

Why are we looking for a backup catcher?  We already have a very qualified backup catcher in Benjie Molina.  Ooo burn!

I also saw in that article that Konerko is available. $12 mil per year for an aging but effective first baseman? He's better than Sexson, but I doubt his price tag is worth it.

So... did Sabean tell everyone those players were untouchable before? I'm not surprised that he isn't looking for a young shortstop or a first baseman, so that makes I guess the source might be credible.

Re: Frandsen's Days at Shortstop are over...
So wait... Frandsen goes into Spring Training the everyday starter at 3B. Vizquel gets hurt, and he moves to the everyday SS role so that Eugenio Velez - who is a much better fit at SS, considering both are bad with the glove there - can take 3B. Frandsen doesn't cut it at SS, so he's not moved back to 3B, where he was going to get everyday ABs, but over to 2B, where he's going to lose at least every other day to Ray fucking Durham!

Who called it, baby!

I know, Grant called it, too, in his post about Velez, but mine came first. AND I used the word "marginaler." That's a word not a lot of people have the guts to use these days.

Frankly, he doesn't have as high a ceiling, so the Giants will be far more willing to burn an option with him now than Burriss, who they want to let become truly ready.

Now I know why I dislike Frandsen so much
He has the totally misplaced arrogance of John Montefusco with even less talent and without ever being lucky.
Frandsen said if he had started taking grounders at shortstop when camp opened, "I could probably guarantee I'd be making the routine plays look easy and making some out of the ordinary, but the routine plays, I wasn't making."

I try hard to fight it off myself, but I can't help but get the douchebag vibe every time I hear Frandsen on KNBR. He just comes off as the annoying frat-boy type, which may not have bugged me so much if I didn't have to suffer through the endless Robby Thompson comparisons.

I love Kevin (and we were once on the same TV show, sort of), but when I read his comment about being able to play well at shortstop if he had taken ground balls there since the beginning of training camp I had to wonder just why he hadn't taken ground balls there since the beginning of training camp.  Did someone prevent him from doing so?

Did someone prevent this player whose potential job could well be as a utlity infielder from taking ground balls at shortstop over the winter?
