C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/jon_heyman/03/03/heyman.sabathia/1.html

SI.com's Jon Heyman believes C.C. Sabathia's three most likely landing spots next winter are the Yankees, Dodgers, and Giants, in that order.

While Sabathia/Tim Lincecum/Matt Cain would be nasty, I can't see the Giants doing another $100MM+ pitching contract.  Then again, I didn't see them as a top suitor for Aaron Rowand this winter.

- How could the Giant's even be a top 10 contender for C.C next year when we have Zito's contract and absoulutely zero offense?? I'll have to check my ESPN insider account and see what they say about this.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
We could give him an awesome Toyota Vallejo endorsement deal like we had with Richie back in the day! That could seal it! (I hope it's obvious I'm being facetious at this point, and I really hope it's obvious now)

Really, I just like reppin' Vallejo. Yee yee.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
He already is the spokesperson for Toyota Vallejo.  Him and his wife took off right where Richie and Racquel left off.

He even has one with the Vallejo High School cheerleaders.  That one's weird.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Oh, I've seen the commercials and they are WONDERFUL. What I'm proposing is an even longer, more lucrative deal just to make sure he keeps making them.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
he was a beast at power forward for vallejo high too. (he worked me over in two matchups, and in my one at-bat against him i took 3 fastballs, didnt see a single one and walked back to the dugout happy not to have taken one in the back)  maybe the warriors could kick in some money and he'd solve some rebounding issues.  god i just hope he doesnt cross over to the down south dark side.  i'm crossing all my fingers and toes for an amazing first half from zito so we can deal him to the yankees and sign cc!

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
I know where CC went to high school. I don't think you were paying attention to this conversation. I went to high school less than ten minutes from where he went to high school. My high school and his high school are rivals in the same crappy, bankrupt school district. I graduated high school on the campus at which CC went to high school. I know where CC went to high school.

What I was wondering is what high school sam23 went to, because if he played against CC in high school, it must have been for a school with sports programs in the MEL. A school I most likely would have played soccer against. Which is why I'm curious.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
yep, i went to vintage howtheyscored.  i heard they totally reconfigured the MEL now though, so I'm not sure vintage still plays vallejo.  whered you go?  im guessing bethel if you graduated on vallejo's campus.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
They did completely reconfigure the MEL. Rodriguez is in it now, or something, and it has divisions... I don't know, something weird. I don't understand it anymore. It all started changin my senior year, but I couldn't play that year so I wasn't paying attention.

And I went to Hogan. Bethel is for the Re-Jects! I think every HS in the VCUSD graduates at Vallejo High because they have that nifty Corbus Field to do it on.

And I did play Vintage quite a few times. In my Junior year when we played them, because Hogan soccer had been so bad for so long, when they only beat us 2-1 their coach made them run sprints as a punishment. It was kind of awesome, except we still lost so it was bittersweet.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
yea our soccer team was pretty good, slightly made up for the fact that we got our asses kicked in football every year.  didnt mean to offend you with the bethel comment, i didnt know it was for the rejects, i think my senior year was their first year of existence.  i guess vintage plays schools like davis high and elk grove now, thats ridiculous the old MEL was a good league, every school seemed to be really good in at least one sport, but nobody dominated the whole league.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
My first year of HS was either Bethel's first or second year, I can't quite remember. It was a nice, modern, new campus in a good spot, and it pulled away all the best teachers from Vallejo and Hogan, but it filled it's student body with the rest of the districts cast-offs. It had some good students from demographics alone, and I know a few people whose parents petitioned to get them into Bethel, but most of that student body was AWFUL for the first 3or 4 years it was around.

It's probably evened out by now, though (and Hogan has gone waaay downhill), and I know plans are to make Hogan a middle school eventually so things could get very interesting in the VCUSD in the coming years.

The MEL was a good league. Hogan dominated Badminton! Kind of sucked at everything else. I think it changed because there were new schools coming in, like Rodriguez, that needed a league for their sports and the MEL was already too big to bring in new schools.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
That. Would. Be. One badass rotation.  Sabathia/Cain/Lincecum/Zito/who cares who the 5th guy is the first 4 are incredible enough (save Zito, but come on he'd be one of the best #4 starters in the league.)  However, I don't see us blowing any money at all on C.C.  Maybe he'd give us a huge discount, but if he can recreate his Cy Young season from last year, he could command upwards of 150 mil from anyone else.  I doubt he'd settle for anything less than 100 mil, so is he really worth it to fortify a rotation that's already good enough?  I'd rather we blew that money on someone like Mark Teixiera or somebody that could spark us some offense.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant?
Aha, but with Sabathia we'd have some offense! .721 OPS is better than half our lineup last year.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)
sign him!!! i dont care what offense you have with a rotation like that you are automatically a threat. also we would have all 4 of our strters for at least another 3 years. that would give us time to build our offense up and win it all!!!!! yaaayy! giants in 2011. cc sabathia ws mvp
zito 7 strait cy youngs

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)
that'd be dumb. As great as he is, his body shape would worry me for a guy you'd want to invest years in.

Zito may not have the performance to justify his dollars, but in terms of health he's as good an investment as a team could make

Yeah. 6'8"/300. Plus, he made the statement that he had to work his ass off to get to that weight. You can easily see him getting to Bubba Paris size with no problem.

Love to have him here, but we have bigger fish to fry (bad pun).

However, if the 49ers are willing to go halves with us, then maybe CC can do some DT time over at Candlestick during the off-season.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)
now youre on to something.  i said the warriors, since he was a very good pf in high school, but what if he could be the niner's nose tackle, the warriors pf, AND the giants ace?  i figure if everybody kicks in about 8-10 mil a year theyre getting their money's worth and cc has himself a record contract.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)
Jon Heyman is an idiot, and his thoughtful speculation shouldn't be considered "rumor." What sickens me the most is that it's so stupid that it actually makes sense.

Like signing Zito for 126 million made sense, even though the rotation was our strong point, and that's stupid money to give anyone. And signing Aaron Rowand, even though we had 30 CF's. Oh, and re-signing Vizquel, with an automatically vesting option... sorry, my point was about Jon Heyman, not Brian Sabean.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)
It's not as dumb as we may think.  The Giants will have some wasted money coming off the books over the next several years, with key pitchers locked up under favorable contracts (Cain, Lincecum) during that time.  Even if they threw serious coin at CC, their entire Starting Five and bullpen for that matter would barely scratch $50 million of their annual payroll, and with them going young and cheaper at the non-Rowand positions over the next several years with a speed/pitching/contact hitting approach, they could bring him aboard and add a power bat for the OF, and keep the payroll perhaps just under $100 million.

From Magowan's perspective, which always involves filling the seats, having at least three pitchers worth seeing every five days may be more cost-effective than banking everything on a cancerous $18 million/yr. power hitter.

Re: C.C. Sabathia a Giant? (in 2009)
With so few prospects being close to MLB ready, I think the team is far more likely to take on a couple more Rowand-type players/contracts than sign starting pitching, especially if this season goes like we're expecting (ok ptching + no offense)
Hoping tk's recovery is faster than Raj going from first to third!

If the Giants give him a nine-figure contract I think CC should use the money to rescue Vallejo from bankruptcy.  Then he would OWN the town, figuratively AND literally.
