Kline DFA'd
So says Schulman, with confirmation from Kline, so its a done deal. Ten days to deal or release him. Merkin and Threets both make the team. The Giants look clueless this spring regarding their lineup, but the pitching decisions seem ok - giving the kids a chance.
Schulman also thinks the Giants may acquire backup catcher Humberto Quintero (good field, no hit) who was dfa'd by Houston.

Oh snap!
Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

It's a stupid move
Kline should have been sent packing, but this move is stupid because the Phillies were ready on Wednesday to send Wes Helms here for Kline, and it was the Giants who backed away. So what will happen now that the Giants have told other teams that they can soon get Kline for nothing?
by Buck Henry on Mar 29, 2008 11:05 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Call me crazy
But I'd rather get nothing than Helms. An open roster spot is more valuable to this team than more veteran filler, IMO, even at a position of need.

OK - you're crazy
But I do agree with you wholeheartedly - better an outright release than veteran filler, particularly given the team's inclination to play whatever veterans we have because "they give us a better chance of winning". But trading for someone young and relatively low on the enemy totem pole - a la Pichardo or Denker - who might contribute something down the line would be even better. Of course, if the Devil Rays want to trade Brignac for Kline, I guess I could live with that too.

It's the open roster spots
that give me the most concern as long as Sabean is around. I'll disagree with you about Helms - he could have helped here and it was definitely worth Kline to find out. I would rather take a shot on Helms for Kline than let Sabean make another mistake with an open roster spot and grab a backup catcher with no numbers whatsoever.

Define "help"
I certainly think he might have helped the team win one or two more games in 2008, but I don't think that would really help the franchise. I'd much rather see them cycle through fringe prospects and organizational players than bring in a Helms-type.

Farewell, little buddy
Your pretty okayness will echo through the generations and give hope to a whole new generation of Mike Stantons.
I looked up Steve Kline in the dictionary. He wasn't there. If he was, it would have said "pretty okay"

My 2010 catcher rotation in BBM09 is Notgardo and Quintero. He's pretty good in fake reality!

1 down, 5 or so to go
The decisions they make with pitchers are, sometimes, not completely dumb. Dumping this guy to see if Threets or Valdez can do something is smart.
But if that's the case, why not last July for a box of baseballs or some new sanitaries? Sheesh.

DFA for real...
Is this one of those times that the team DFAs a guy waits 9 days and then just puts them back on the roster... or is this DFA for real and for good?

Good Riddance Kline...
Granted we are going to field a terrible team this season but at least it is refreshing to see Giants management truly try to clean house. Yest it was Alfonso, today Kline and very soon hopefully Durham/Roberts will be gone too. Our pitching seems to be pretty solid and if we can just get the young kids some playing time in the field we can really be on the way to a recovery. PLAY BALL!!!!!

I’ll miss St Anger. Not for any practical reasons. He was just a non P.C. kind of guy in my eyes. I always thought he might blowup again thus giving me an element of possible late inning entertainment.
Realistically the cleaning has too start some were so there is as good as any place among the over 30 and playing part time. Sabean, coffee break aint for several months or tell you get the roster down to 2-3 token savvy vets. It’s coppice time… you savvy??

Kline was an entertaining guy. I remember last year when he plunked Torrealba after he hit a HR off of him and admired it. Kline was pissed and Torrealba said something like "What's he going to do, hit me with one of his 85mph fastballs?" and Kline did.

Exactly what I am talking about. Kline will not be confused with elite talent but he gave what he had. I value that. Especially on a team as dismal as last year was and this year has the potential to be. I just don’t value it more then the chance to improve.

I am just trying to figure out in what world you rather go with Aurillia/Ort than Helms at 1B. Ortmeier even has options so if Helms can't play, you can just dump him.
Does Helms actually have a salary? That would be an ironic decision for a team that constantly throws money at wash-up has-beens.

If Durham’s hammy blows up Helm’s might make some sense as a filler. But again another part time player over 30. I guess his upside is the Dodgers are standing down wind of him? Boo Yah.

I don't know who's Helm, but I doubt Durham would want to use his hamstring.

Durham seemed to be using the bat Helms used against RHP last year. (221/261/313 just for kicks)

Zenbita, this shows how your enmity towards Sabean clouds your thinking. a), Helms is a 3b, not a 1b, b) he is worse than Feliz, worse than Castillo at 3b, c) his salary is in the $2.5 mil range, d) adding him just adds to the log jam of vets-needing-to-be-traded pile. You should be cheering from the roof top that Sabean kept Threets over Kline AND didn't bring in Helms who would cost Ort and/or Velez either a roster spot or, ABs. This is a very good move, a move that should cheer the hearts of those concerned about compromising the rebuild.
by allfrank on Mar 30, 2008 9:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't like Helms either, but...
This reasoning makes no sense:
"a), Helms is a 3b, not a 1b"
Ortmeier is a converted OF (22 career games at 1B), and Aurilia is a converted SS (109 games at 1B), but you don't want Helms (254 games at 1B) because he's "not a 1b"? Wha?

lefties
a few weeks ago i was expecting Misch and Kline on the roster (hoping to trade Kline soon). I thought Tasch and Threets were too hittable. Wrong again as far as the roster! I'm still worried about the too hittable part, especially Threets.
