Eliezer Alfonzo to Triple-A Fresno
http://www.mercurynews.com/giants/ci_8742469
Bochy said it would be wrong to assume that Steve Holm would be the backup catcher; the Giants have looked outside the organization for catching help and Josh Paul could be one possibility. Paul was released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who also reassigned catcher Mike DiFelice on Saturday.
Josh Paul is 33 years old and played in 35 games for the Rays in 2007. His career numbers in 9 ML years are .244/.303/.341.
Mike DiFelice is 39 years old and played in 16 games for the NYM in 2007. His career numbers in 12 ML years are .235/.287/.355.
No thanks. Keep looking Sabean.

I can only dream
that the Angels' Kotchman/Mathis story is a remote possibility here. It would cost the Giants Molina, but Bengie won't be here when the team is good again, and if they have to cough up Molina and a decent pitcher to get a good young 1B and a decent, platoonable catcher, then so be it.

I wonder why we're even worrying about the backup catcher position. We kind of have bigger problems. Like, our entire starting lineup.

Oh come on
I'm not much of an Eliezar guy, but furreals... what is even the point of sending him down for the sake of spending extra money on players who might not even be marginal improvements.
It's the freaking backup catcher spot. Fill it cheaply and meaninglessly from within the org!
I'm not against sending Eliezar down, but sending him down to scour the veteran trash-heap is maddening.
It's still somewhere around number 150 on our reasons to be mad at the team's roster choices, but it hurts that we even HAVE 150 reasons. We should have, like, 5. Tops.

This appears to be complaining just to be complaining, looking for an excuse for complaining. How can you criticize cutting Alfonzo? The guy got 4 hits in ST AND he was very poor defensively. Are you saying we should have kept the guy as BU C? Ridiculous.
Secondly, how can you criticize the move to replace him when you have no idea in hell what that move will be? Couldn't you wait until the move was made?
I think it is a good move as Rodriguez was hurt all Spring and isn't ready and Holm or whoever we pickup is an improvement over Alfonzo.

Hey! Look at that, Holm is the backup! I'm celebrating the non-stupidity of this move! Woo-hoo! Yeeh! Yummy crow! Happy happy! I can't believe how wonderful this is!

dead horse? where's my stick?
I had the same mystified, irritated reaction.
Not to claim, again, that "lol Ginatz R old !!1!1", but isn't backup catcher the last guy you want to be gimping around pulling hamstrings and taking baby aspirin every morning?
Why couldn't Knoedler have had this job three years ago? I don't mind Eliezer either. Matt Helm, #71 in your program but superspy in your hearts, seems just as boring. And if he's any good, why did he rot in AA so long?
I am glad that we won't seem to be seeing G-Rod anymore (talk about a lousy defensive catcher), but if that's the case why is he even in Fresno again? It's not going to keep the Giants from winning the WS this year, but having these career guys filling up roster spots in the minors forever seems ridiculous. I can understand having a veteran catcher, corner infielder, middle infielder, and outfielder so that they can come up to fill a roster spot once in a while. But the rest should be players with a future, not 25 Crash Davis clones that will never make it. Or worse, 25 Scott McClains that management will never bring up to fill holes in the majors at no cost. Is Scott McClain really that much worse than Aurilia? Or Leone that much worse than.. well, no one at 3B?
Vomitous.

See spring training playing time at SS for motivation to get someone with a capable glove to back up Molinia.
Molinia will be 33 this season and that’s an age Catchers and second baseman tend to start losing it. I am not saying it’s a certainty but it’s a realistic occurrence. In the short term , if the Giants are in a tie in the last innings pinch running for "Plate Tectonics" Molina might be wise idea. On top of that over his career Molina really becomes a lot less effective with a bat after 950 innings ( roughly 105 full games) in the field.
I view this a lot like the Kline DFA. Or cleaning up after a week end long party. You have to start some were so I am just glad Sabean seems to have started ,possibly, doing something about the mess. Time will tell if he is serious of just grab assing around again.
I am a Giants fan. Thus I enjoy my pain.

I just find it hard to believe that somewhere, SOMEWHERE, a decent backup catcher is that difficult to find. It's not like we're asking for a guy to walk on water. Just be durable, have a decent arm and bat and be able to fill in from time to time.

The really sad thing
Is that I write his first name because I don't want to bother remembering if it's an s or a z in his last name. I think my idiot wins....

If Notgardo is gone ... bring me the head (and body) of Vance Wilson. It's not like he'd get much time anyway so it doesn't matter if he's injured. Really.

I'd rather see Holm up here than some lousy career backup. Bochy is going to play Molina into the ground anyway.

I'd much rather see DeFelice than lazer. he is nearly as bad defensivley as Pedro was last year during his 1 inning audition, and it's possible he swings at even more pitches than Peter Happy ever did. Viva DiFelice!

DeFelice is a really similar name to Feliz, too.
