Sabean on KNBR
Anyone catch Sabean on with Ralph and Flem this afternoon? If you didn't, you didn't miss a whole lot outside of one draft tidbit. Without being asked, he said the Giants will almost assuredly be looking for a "high impact positional player" with the 5th pick and "have acknowledged (we) have been too pitcher focused." Even if it should have been obvious, it was nice to hear.
Stated that any bats they'd acquire would be preferable left handed (although can beggers be choosers?) and reiterated what he said yesterday that "the best players are going to play regardless of contract." Admitted they rode the Bonds train too long and "should have started the transitional phase 2 years ago."

Preferably lefty? Interesting...
I know AT&T kills lefties and righties, but I always thought that - Bonds aside - it murdered lefties whereas it merely manslaughtered righties. I guess I could be wrong, though.

No. You're right. Actually left field to left center is neutral to hitter friendly. Sabean is an idiot.

They should strive for some LH/RH balance. Half the games are played on the road. Filling a lineup all RHH makes it too easy for opposing teams. I'd love to see a LHH masher like Fielder or a switch-hitter like Texiera batting for the Giants, regardless of the ballpark.

and he's only got his hands and feet covered.
Man, the Giants are miserable.
But E is just plain sad.
McCovey Cove Lives!
Maybe we don't have to fill-in McCovey Cove after all!
It would be nice to see the kayakers frolicking again.
Always a nice diversion for Kruk and Kuip during a blow-
out...
Makes me think of Smoak or Hosmer. I doubt Alvarez will be around by our pick.
I'd say Alonso also, but I don't think that he fits the "athletic" profile we covet so very much.
Brian Anderson: I can has spot in Fresno 'pen?
Clarification
The "prefer a left handed hitter part" was in reference to a player who could help the club this year - not the draft pick.
Ah
You know I could name a left handed hitter who's also a free agent right now.

oh man
it's right on the tip of my tongue.
there used to be a couple pictures of him around here, somewhere.
I sure wish that Ort Cloud would form a solid sphere to enter into this team's orbit.

Stay true to your Draftboard
If SF has a pitcher rated very high (Crow possibly) and he is available they should also consider the pitcher.
Not Mutually Exclusive
One would think that Brian Sabean would be wise enough to realize that keeping Barry Bonds and building for the future by adding younger players weren't mutually exclusive.
When Theo Epstein took over as GM of the BoSox after the 2002 season, he pledged to improve their scouting and player developnment. The World Champion Red Sox were helped by a few players they have drafted since that time, including their closer and their starting second baseman.
Brian Sabean appears to have had no such foresight. Instead, he soon began giving UP high draft choices.
Brian's problem wasn't keeping Barry Bonds, a player who with the exception of his injury season of 2005, gave the Giants more than their money's worth. Brian's problem was that he made poor choices in the players surrounding Barry. And that he chose to ignore the future in the mistaken belief that he couldn't build a future while retaining Bonds.
Brian's comments on KNBR, as described here, show little insight into reality IMO.
Or Sabean can just look at the Yank
the org he was from: Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Posada, Pettite, Cano, Wang, Cabrera.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
The craziest thing...
...is that Sabean drafted most of those guys.
Delaying the disappointment: I adopt Hector Sanchez because he's only 17.
murton on first?
why no interest in matt murton? why not try to pry the guy away for kline, and hand him the first base job? if it doesnt work out you havent lost much and he would almost undoubtedly be better than ort/aurilia. it could even give sabes more reason to trade winn/roberts to an of needy team like tampa bay or san diego. has the murton idea already been brought up here and i missed it or why no talk about him at all?
Murton
While I think Matt Murton is a good player, he's never played first base in his life. Why do people think it's so easy to play first base?? Just hand him a glove and he's JT Snow. He's never played it before so hand him a mitt on Opening Day and expect to compete with pitching and defense?? If it was this easy I would just hand a first baseman's mitt to Fred Lewis or Nate Schierholtz and let them play first everyday, and forget about giving up something valuable for Murton.
Randy Messenger: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!!"
Why do people think it's so easy to play first base??
That's a very good question that occurred to me when they had Ortmeier out there last year with virtually no prior game experience. It's easy to stand on the bag and catch well-placed throws from infielders. But digging throws from the dirt, running down foul balls in Dodger Stadium, etc. are not the easiest things to do. Worse, most putouts occur there, so that's even more chance for disaster.
And it doesn't make much sense on a "pitching and defense" team either. Then you might as well get Snow back (and I still don't understand why Klesko, Aurilia, etc. were perceived as some kind of brilliant bargain maneuver...).

It's not easy to play first (or I would wager any defensive position in a professional sport) but it's the easiest, least demanding defensive position on the baseball field.

Left field is the easiest. Maybe touch the ball 2 or 3 chances a game on average. Catcher is by the far the hardest.

Remeber
when Sabaen came to the Giants', it was bereft of pitching prospects, and had been for years. We all thought William Van Landingham was the bee's knees. The orgaization (especially Dick Tidrow) chose to concentrate on growing pitchers, and they have been very successful. That, and the absoulete faliure of several hitting prospects (EME comes to mind) has left the system thin on position players at a high level.
Most teams can try to win, or can try to build a farm system because of revenue. The two teams mentioned in the posts above that win while going WAY overslot for their draft picks happed to be the two franchises with the most $$ so spend. Give Sabaen this contract before we all hoist him on his own pitard. It will end up a lot better, a lot faster, than we all think. Throw in a switch hitting first baseman who is a free agent this winter, give Cain and Lincecom another year to mature, and you have an above average team next year, and 2010 when An-Vil arrives you have a serious contender.
I am the bee's knees. Well maybe not bee's persay. How about Locust's?

very successful at growing pitchers????
it took 10 years of drafting mainly pitchers to finally get studs like cain and lincecum on the staff
10 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sabeans philosophy has been to draft pitching and then trade that pitching for position players.....look how that turned out
sabean is a failure....an abject failure
and i love the pollyanas who still believe that this team will be a contender by 2010....aint gonna happen
Bacci - that's it!
Since Sabean started drafting real pitchers who can actually make it to the bigs and succeed he hasn't been able to make a successful trade to save his life. Ergo, we should go back to drafting failed pitching prospects and trading them for the Snows, Nens and Livans of the world. Brilliant!
Delaying the disappointment: I adopt Hector Sanchez because he's only 17.
Hey I said last year that Jonathan Sanchez is the bee's knees.
Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

The problem
...is that Sabean had no plan - no vision for the future. You and I will eventually retire from our jobs; when we do, we'd better have been planning for the sudden drop in income because we knew all along that day was coming. We all knew Barry wasn't going to play forever, and we all knew that free agency wasn't the solution to all our problems. Sabean gave no evidence of having a plan - it was all stopgap measures under his direction.
It isn't just that the Giants haven't produced a hitter since the Paleolithic Era; it's that they've had very little interest in doing so this century. I hope to goodness he was being truthful when he said that they were looking for a hitter in this year's draft. But I've been fooled before, so I'm cautious.
Your 2011 SF Giants: the 2008 Augusta Greenjackets!
Lyle mentions the Paleolithic Era
I'm gonna play it safe.
I'm going to watch the History Channel until they have a special on that one, and then I'll comment.
the Loony Fringe was right, after all
Sabean is a moron who should be fired immediately.

who could have known that Bonds would get older and slow down and become a greater injury risk after he reached 40?
Bonds stands alone.

What do you mean it took ten years? Have you seen all the decent pitchers who have come from the Giants system? Bonser, Grilli, Liranio, Nathan, Taschner, Cain, Lincecom, Russ Ortiz, Lowry, and that's just off the top of my head. Don't let your disappointment of the last two (and upcoming) season color the truth.
Sabaen wanted to start this rebuilding process two years ago, but ownership chose to keep Bonds.
I'm not a pollyana, I am a realist who know good pitching. The Giants' have a lot of good young pitching, and will have a lot of money to spend on hitters before Villalona gets here.
On a good note
Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News :
Overheard
* San Francisco is serious about moving veteran second baseman Ray Durham, who is guaranteed $8 million this year, and outfielder Dave Roberts, guaranteed $6.5 million this year and next. The Giants admit they will pick up part of the salary for both.
I would pick up Roberts' entire salary for this season to move him. The other team would basically be paying him 6 million for two seasons, which is a bargain. No offense to Roberts who is a decent player, but he is blocking younger and better players in Fred Lewis and Nate Schierholtz. I wouldn't fault them if they kept Durham because they had doubts about Velez and Castillo, but it would certainly make me happy if they ate Ray's contract and gave his job to Eugenio.
Randy Messenger: "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!!"
I dunno anymore on Fred Lewis
He's a 5-tool player where 2 of the tools (baserunning and defense) are broken. It absolutely floors me how often he mentally farts on the basepaths and in the field.
I love his plate discipline and potential power. Really, I do. But how much are they worth with the glove and running issues, which might actually be more like learning disabilities, and thus bigger longterm problems?
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco?
I'm floored every time you fart.
