Villalona to start in San Jose?

Everything we've heard or read so far has suggested Augusta, but CNN runs with this quote:

"Last year's draft, in which general manager Brian Sabean loaded up on high-ceiling position players for the first time in his 11-year tenure, was widely praised throughout baseball. Then there is 6' 3", 200-pound man-child Angel Villalona, who was signed out of the Dominican Republic for $2.1 million in August 2006, hit .285 in rookie ball -- as a 16-year-old -- and will start the season in the high Class A California League."

Could be a typo/misinformation, or could be that the brass is getting aggressive with Big V.

TimA and AnVil in SJ? My head is exploding.

Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

I think they are just making a mistake. Everything I have heard and read is that the org is going to try to make an effort to keep Noonan, Culberson, and Villalona together for as long as possible. I have heard that these three have spent a lot of time together, training and outside of baseball.

Is it cool if Fairrley hangs out with them too?

Assuming they get along...

...AnVil having a couple of guys near his age to hang around with, practice his English on, figure out a foreign country, etc, has got to be the best plan for him. As a San Francisco fan, I want him in the majors yesterday. But even if he's the next Miguel Cabrera, he's got 3 more years in the minors. It'll be hard waiting, but it should be worth it. And then it'll be that much sweeter every time he beats the Dodgers.

Fairly could conceivably lag behind, developmentally. It will be interesting to watch.

Probably a mistake. The story appears to have been written fairly early in spring training by a national writer.

ML rosters should be set this week, right?

by KCE on Mar 27, 2008 10:24 AM PDT reply actions

That's minor league rosters, I mean.

I guess both statements are right..

No.

Every source I have says "Whaaaa?"

San Jose will star the year with Pill and D'Alessio tag teaming at first. Augusta will have Villalona and Neal manning the slightly-less-hot-corner.

If

If Villalona and Alderson are able to be successful in San Jose this season, that will represent a fast learning curve for each.

Just think if the Giants had had the wisdom to draft Rick Porcello, widely considered the best high school pitcher last season and by some to be the best high school pitcher in years. Instead, the Tigers paid $8 million to draft and sign Porcello, whom they have ticketed for High A even though his entire professional experience was his 1.59 ERA in 5 2/3 innings of spring training with the big club.
