Mailing it in.... Fresno Style

Well Im not going to say the Giants mailed it in, instead it seemed more like they used UPS instead. Quicker and more efficient that way.

Well I'll sign in and see how this works out. Your first fan blog AAA Fresno style. I'll try not to look as bad as the Giants did last night...... I certainly won't bog you down with a ton of stats, numbers and  play by play, because there really isn't much to tell. But a few thoughts.

1. What a great night... Fantastic!! A wonderful thing for the city of Fresno. It really was a party like atmosphere and all 14,000+ that turned out (Largest crowd to ever see a baseball game in the City of Fresno) had a great time and all was great..... all accept for the Giants anyway.

2. Minch looked like a Million bucks, Zito looked like.... well.. like Zito. You know its going to be a long night when you struggle to get out of the first against your AAA club. Minch looked "Marble Smooth" as the Fresno Bee said in this mornings paper, and I would tend to agree. Not allowing any earned runs.  Minch was quoted as saying after the game "I would have loved to have stayed out there"...... Ummmmmm sorry Pat, I don't think the big club was having any part of being shut out last night, but thanks for the gem nonetheless.

3. Rowand apparently has been hanging around Kruk these days and has adopted one of Kruks old catch phrases.... "Shinburger". Well that sammach kept AR out of the line up last night. A MAJOR disappointment to all that attended.

4. Scott McClain: How does this guy slip though our system? Every game I hear this guy announced over the PA for the starting line up in Fresno, I shake my head. This guy has done nothing but MASH everywhere he's been. 30+ bombs the last 3 years for Fresno and Sacramento, plays a decent 1st base, and twice the PCL player of the year.... This guy gets out of bed in the morning hitting bombs!!! Now I know there are a ton of Ortty fans out there, and yea, he deserves a look, but the look this spring as been less than stellar. But watching him last night look like a fool in the latter part of the game against Sergio Romo (who was named the new Grizzlies Closer) made me wonder (for about the 15000th time out loud) why does Scott not even get a sniff?

Those of you that want to join the Scott McClain fan club..... sign in here!!

5. Lastly..... My camera took a dump (it probably didn't help that I spilled my pre- game Bud Light on it). So I went to the ol reliable backup. The Blackberry Pearl. Now these aren't the cleanest pictures in the world, but I wanted to throw up a couple of pictures to those of you that are not familiar with "The Chuck" as I affectionately like to call it. Chuckchansi Park (named after one of our local Indian gaming donation centers) really is a wonderful facility. It normally seats about 12,000 but last night they piled an extra 2k worth of standing room only tickets. It sits in the middle of downtown Fresno that is undergoing a major revitalization. My business (handicapped accessible transportation solutions business) is a part of that revitalization. I'm proud of what the city has accomplished thus far, but there is still more to come. I highly recommend that if you happen to be in the Central Valley this summer that you stop by and take in a game.... Nothing beats a minor league game in this park in the summer time.

Here's a few pics of the evening... once again sorry for the quality.

Pic 1: Img00170_mediumThis is the view as you step out on to the concourse.... As you can see, it really is something to behold for a little ol cow town like ours.

Zito was throwing some long toss before the game. This is just after he threw one that sailed about 10 feet over Molina's head and into the stands. Gardner (also a Fresno native) just kinda shook his head like "its going to be a long night".

Pic 3: Img00173_medium

this is what it looked like just as the first pitch got underway.... they packed um in last night in a big way. You almost couldn't move. My buddy Java Jeff was finally able to get some Chicken Strips with one out in the top of the ninth.

Pic 4: Img00169_medium

via img.photobucket.com

Little pregame pepper going on here, but the guy in the Zito jersey poses another question.... Why is Zito's number a non roster invitee number? Well I guess he's living up to his number this spring.... although there have been some NRI's that have had a hell of a lot better springs.

Well hope you all enjoyed this little jaunt through Fresburgh..... I'll try to fill you in from time to time on all the latest things going on down here. Hopefully next time my camera doesn't take a crap so I can get you some decent shots of the Tecate Girls..... mmmmmm Smokin!!! Once again my apologies on that.

Thanks for reading

Thanks for the update. I read in the newspaper that Zito didn't look all that bad. He breezed through some innings and struggled in a few.

Sabean and McGowan

I had a great time at the game last night. Always fun when you can root for both teams and not feel wishy-washy. Just missed a foul ball as well.
Zito did settle down after that first inning. I was surprised they had him pitch as long as he did but the season does start Monday. I had to laugh when Zito hit into a ground ball third out and Scott McClain spiked the ball in front of Zito as he ran off the field. Not sure what that was about but funny as hell.
I was excited to see Velez run but he hit into a double play and was thrown out by several feet. He also booted a ball at third base.
Scott McClain did look good at bat and the field. Made some nice plays especially fighting the fans for a foul ball out. Hit the ball hard but a couple of times and had the bases loaded against Zito in the first and grounded out.
Even more amazing was Brian Sabean actually making an appearance in Fresno. The first time he has made the short trip down to watch his own prospects. He was there with Peter McGowan to sign the Grizzlies up for two more years as an affiliate. I think after the way the Giants have treated the Grizzlies the past few years they were kissing a little ass to ensure they remain part of the Giants organization.

Short trip???

Dude, I'm from Modesto and live in the bay Area. Getting to Fresno is no short trip!

Unless you fly... Um... Never mind.

Just wanted to say, though, that I went to a game a couple years ago at the "Chuck," and loved it. What a cool stadium, and the beer prices! $1 Wednesday was AWESOME! Even if it did mean having to ride a rocking horse into battle (in laymens terms, getting drunk on 3.2% beer).

Even if He Drove

Even if Sabean drove to Fresno which he probably wouldn't do , it is his job to oversee the team"s prospects. I would think he would like to see the players in person once or twice a season and not rely only on scouts, managers etc from each of the minor league affiliates.
Hey if I can drive to AT&T once or twice a season, you would think he could at least fly the same route to see something that is part of his job description.
I think it is Thirsty Thursdays that are the one dollar beer nights. Wednesdays you can get kids and seniors into the game for one dollar which is good for taking my daughters and dad to the game. I could then have enough money saved to get a large beer or two at the game.

When I went there, I think it was a Wednesday. Keep in mind, it was like three or four years ago. IIRC, they also had dollar dogs. It was the best ballpark experience EVER!!!

Andy, I'm a little confused by your assumptions about Sabean's job. You're saying he should visit the AAA affiliate in order to evaluate for himself the prospects in the minors. While I agree most GMs should and would do that, I don't think Sabes cares that we have a minor league system, unless it's an emergency or he needs to trade someone. So why on earth would he ever need to go to Fresno?

Yes, this was tongue-in-cheek.

Romo

Is Romo destined to be a reliever? Haven't heard much on the guy, does he have high potential to reach The Club this year as a reliever should our 'pen be hurt/ineffective? Someone tell me about this dude.

by UnleashTheGore on Mar 27, 2008 10:32 AM PDT reply actions

Get's good results without overpowering stuff. Superb control and command of the strike zone. Throws from a lot of different arm angles. Future reliever if he makes it to the big club.

Goldstein from BP

Sergio Romo’s numbers are eye-popping--in 41 relief appearances in the California League this year, Romo struck out 106 in just 66 1/3 innings, allowing only 35 hits and 15 walks. That success has continued in the postseason, as Romo has pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings while retiring 13 of the 15 batters he’s faces, seven of them by strikeout. With all this dominance, it’s still hard to get too worked up about Romo as a prospect. Before you even look at his stuff, his size (5'11", 185) and age (he'll turn 25 during spring training next year) are already working against him. Romo’s fastball sits in upper 80s and his curveball is average. So how does he put up such insane numbers? Command and control; Romo can place both of his pitches anywhere he wants them, and his low three-quarters arm slot adds a little deception as well. It’s the kind of combination that stops working at the upper levels, when the margins for error reduce exponentially.

Alex Hinshaw

I thought the set up man Alex Hinshaw was impressive. Struck out the two batters he face : Ortmeir and Lewis. Hinshaw has a similar wind-up and size as Tim Lincecum in my opinion. I don't know anything about him but he looked good last night.

I know a girl that dated him for a while. Apparently he's a really nice guy.

From what I remember, he's always had command issues- that's really the only knock on him. I'm pretty sure he had Tommy John surgery a while back, too, but I could be wrong. Lefty with good stuff, just not the accuracy to really do anything with it.

Interesting...

I'm sure Righetti will cure that great "command and control" problem once he makes it to the big club. He's done a fine job ridding everyone else of it.

As adoptive father, I don't think your Rags comment holds much water. Cain, Lincecum, and Correia have all had improved control under Rags, Lowry's control problems are likely injury related, and Zito's control has been in decline since his Oakland days.

And everyone else? The 'pen makes Rags take a hit.

And if we're going to argue that these players had a control problem predating their Giants days, then if Rags were aWeSoMe!!1! then wouldn't he be able to alleviate some of these issues? It seems to be a chronic problem since I started watching the Giants in the late 90's rather than a few players here and there that had their own inherent control issues.

The problems I remember

All seemed to come from overuse more than anything else. The Giants have had a ton of crappy relief pitchers come in and have really good, uncharacteristic years before dusty/alou blew their arms off. Eyre, Herges, Christianson, Johnstone, Brower, and Munter just off the top of my head. Russ Ortiz is a guy who has only ever pitched well under two pitching coaches. One is widely considered the best pitching coach in the game. The other is Rags. Jerome Williams is a deeply flawed example, but his best days (remembered fondly by all) were Rags associated.

There are always counterexamples, too. Hawkins and Benitez come to mind straight off. Jamey Wright and Brett Tomko each got worse under Righetti (though Wright wasn't that good to begin with). Zito is another obvious, though premature, example.

But I have a long memory of guys coming into the Giants to pitch and having good years compared to their career trajectories. How much of this is Righetti and how much is just dumb luck or something else is pretty unquantifiable, and he's not going to be a magic bean that makes every pitcher he sees improve, but I just think he gets a lot of trash for guys who underperform for reasons that he obviously has nothing to do with - like Lowry's exploding body - and doesn't get a lot of credit for the improvement of guys that he might have had something to do with, like the Correias and Chulks and the Hergeseses.

He is Vengeance. He is the Knight. He is Dave Righetti. PRAY TO HIM!

What about Anderson?

I thought Anderson was going to be closing in Fresno and Romo closer in Connecticut... what gives?

Fresno in the summer

Very nice stadium and the parking is very easy. For a summer game make sure to sit in the shade.

So Sergio Romo will be closing for AAA Fresno that is great news. Hopefully we will see him in The City sometime this season - maybe September?

Great post

Sounds like a good time. I always thought minor league baseball was the kind of thing nobody gave a crap about except in Sacramento. And our AAA team is actually pretty potential-filled this year. Maybe I should look into getting some Grizzlies tickets so I can get away from the whole 162-game losing season we're about to have..

Sad sad state of affairs

Listening to the radio this morning, Mike & Mike of ESPN were poking fun at us, although they did refer to "Barry Zito" as an "Ace". I'm not sure where they get their "facts" from, but the thought itself was enough to make me cry.

Everyone wasn't having a wonderful time

What a great night... Fantastic!! A wonderful thing for the city of Fresno. It really was a party like atmosphere and all 14,000+ that turned out (Largest crowd to ever see a baseball game in the City of Fresno) had a great time and all was great..... all accept for the Giants anyway.

I was there with seven other folks (friends and family) and our experience was apparently quite different from yours and Andy’s. The crowd mood where I was sitting was at times closer to pre-riotous then what you described.

My feelings of disappointment really have nothing to do with the actual game or its outcome. I didn’t really care who won and I wasn’t expecting much from our "Pro" team. I probably would have enjoyed the game more if I was closer to the action, but that’s really beside the point. The best seats that I could get were in section 128 near the right field foul pole (not the best location to watch the game).

The major problem with last night’s experience was the horrendously bad performance of the food vendors. Perhaps it was different in the more expensive sections, but the service in our area had many people irate. People were standing in lines for over an hour only to finally get to the front of the line and discover that the food had run out. Half of our group, a family with two young children, decided to go home after this happened to them. I’m sure that it will be a while before they (and many others who experienced the same thing) decide to attend another Grizzlies game.

Granted, it was the first event of the season (I believe) for the park staff, and they had a record breaking attendance… but the food vendor’s should have been better prepared. Most people probably didn’t have much time to eat beforehand with the game starting at 6:05 PM. Plus, you can’t bring in your own food like you can at Mays Field. This incredibly flawed eating situation caused serious unrest in the food area of our section.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade. Perhaps your observations about people’s experiences were more typical of the majority. The Fresno Bee seems to echo your observations. Although, they seem to describe the wind blowing at 25 knots as if that was a good thing (maybe in the middle of the summer - not last night). That arctic breeze blowing through the place felt more like a bad night at Candlestick than a typical spring night in Fresno.

Yes, it is a nice park, and last night was the first time that I had an unpleasant time watching the Grizzlies. I just wanted to point out that the operators of Chukchansi Park have some work to do if they want to keep people coming back this season.

by Jakespaar on Mar 27, 2008 1:28 PM PDT reply actions

I Agree

When the Grizzlies switched to Ovations for their food concessions it really went down in service quality. They seem nice enough but extremely slow. Even when there is a small crowd it seems slow. Items you know are going to be popular they still seem to not have them ready ahead of time. On dollar beer nights you would think they would keep pouring them as fast as they could but it seems they pour them only after you order even when there is twenty people in line all wanting the same thing: cheap beer.
I had a friend who did give up trying to get food. Heard another lady waited in line only to find they don't take debit cards. They could run it much better and for the prices should.
The wind was not a problem where I was seated above home plate but as it was blowing to right field I can definitely sympathize to your area being very windy.

YES… Glacial Slowness!

Incompetence is more like it.

At the beginning of the game I went to buy a soda for my son. We got in a short line, hoping not to miss much. There were only four people in front of us when we arrived, each only ordering one thing – a drink. A couple of people were "helping" this group get their 4 drinks, something that should have taken about 5 minutes at most. It literally took 15-20 minutes to complete their order. HOW? I can’t explain it, even though I was watching this spectacle. What I can tell you is that I was a touch annoyed…

Ironic

I found it ironic that Patrick Misch outpitched Barry Zito. It's really shame with McClain, but I believe he truly is a AAAA player.
