Baseball Mogul 09
i know some of you nerd it up like i do and look forward to the latest edition of the game. i downloaded it yesterday and played for an hour last night, and have to say it's pretty much the same as '08. they do have a really cool depth chart feature now, but i've always been bummed they don't have a really easy feature to track your players' arbitration clock.
they have MadBum and TimA but no Wendell, which is disappointing, but i just cloned Freddie Lewis and tweaked his stats and age to make a Fairley. they also wised up on trades (no more prince fielder for aurelia offers) and give a little more info during game time. They also invented some minor leaguers for the giants, as apparently we don't have enough to fill out the roster.
anyone else had a chance to check it out? any other similar games worth getting into?

I've heard good things about Out of the Park Baseball but never really had much time with it. From what I've seen, all of the teams and players are fictional, but the engine is supposedly better than BM. They have demos on the official site to try out.

On a related note, Inside the Park Baseball sounds cool. Baseball RPG? I can roll with that.

Does it include the Bondsian Bat of Walking that has +9 to OBP?
Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

OOTP
Out of the Park is a fantastic buy. I've been playing it since version 5 (9 is in the works right now). Never much a fan of Mogul, personally. The newest version, OOTP8, does indeed have full MLB rosters, and I'd advise anyone to give the demo a go. It may seem more complicated, but it's easy once you get the hang of it. Also far more customizable; whether you want to play a historical league, modern day rosters, or a fictional league, you can do it.
Now that I'm done with my sales pitch, don't buy Inside the Park. It was made several years ago and never really supported. Outside the Park, however, is amazing and eats away at my time like crazy.

OOTP..
I've played around with the demo for a bit but I'm just so used to BBM that it was too complicated. If you're into making personel moves, even hiring new scouts, etc. then OOTP is the way to go. If you're looking to just sim a few seasons a bit easily with good stats, go with BBM.

I think
I've probably already played 10 hours on BBM09. It's my first BBM game, and I'm figuring everything out as I go, but so far it's pretty awesome. I took the Giants 2008 squad to 66 glorious wins while loosing veterans and cutting massive amounts of payroll! Pat Misch is my fourth starter going into 2009 after a great second half of 2008 (and a Lowry trade), and I have Wilson Betemit playing 3B on opening day (picked up as a FA).
I couldn't take the Barry Zito for (similar AAA pitcher) offer the computer tried to give me because I felt guilty, but other than that I haven't noticed any major "raping the AI" problems.
The simming is great. I actually do it day by day and look at all the box scores for my team. I'm a total prospect junkie so I look forward to the draft like nobody's business. There's a great catcher coming up in this year's draft and I have the third pick! I think I'ma take him....
He is Vengeance. He is the Knight. He is Dave Righetti. PRAY TO HIM!

I totally love Baseball Mogul, and buy the new version every year. The new version actually has a lot of small additions the makers haven't really advertised - the big thing is a depth chart, but there's lot of little things. Really, the nicest thing for me with BM is the ability to customize it so thoroughly. Too much offense for your taste? Edit the simulation stats. AI not making enough trades? Bump it up by 10-20%. The same for prospect promotion, injury frequency, stats vs scouting, and many other things. It really enhances the replay value of the game.
Plus, it gives me the chance to go back in time and redo things from 2002, with all Sabean's blunders. Back-to-back championships in SF here we come!
There is no end of therapeutic value in it for the suffering Giants fan.
I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?

Two questions
1. Is there any option to turn injuries down or off this year? In 08, I was not happy with how often injuries happened and sometimes I like to play with injuries completely off so I can see how I do with luck removed.
2. Did they fix the progression? Players did not seem to progress well at all in 08. In my first draft I was able to grab Rick Porcello and Jarrod Parker (custom rosters) and neither progressed one bit. I realize not everyone pans out, but those are two of the best arms in the minors and were probably the #2 and #3 arm in the draft.

Two answers
1. Yes. There is an option to shift them to %100 plus or minus the normal setting, along with many other things.
2. Yes and no. More prospects are in, but unless they've started to establish themselves as major league players, its a tossup on whether they'll be good. Even then, no guarantees. Lincecum, for example, isn't a lock for future greatness, and Villalona almost certainly won't pan out. Pitchers seem to be underrated more than hitters. Again, this is also customizable, as how prospects develop can either be completely consistent with their projected peak, or almost random, depending on how you set "draft predictability."

Bought and downloaded.
I'll have to only just play around a bit tonight because I'm pretty wiped but soon I'll be able to offer a good opinion on it.

I'd love to download this so I can play it when I ttravel. Is this something where you have to be connected to the internet (I'm thinking for updates and that sort of thing), or is the program all inclusive?

You don't have to be connected..
Every so often yes there will be updates for it but you can play it offline without connecting.
