Giants Interested in Robert Fick
Per the Merc this morning:
The club was planning to discuss other additions via trade or through the waiver wire. One is Robert Fick, who was released by the San Diego Padres and has played for Bochy in the past. Fick's agent, Eric Goldschmidt, said he planned to talk with Giants officials late Monday.
In addition to being a backup first baseman, Fick has experience behind the plate, and Bochy has preferred in the past to keep three players on the roster with catching ability.

Let me get this straight
Lengthy discussion on the unbearable frustration, leading to the inevitable conclusion that our MLB team will be worse than most franchise's AAA teams this season.
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco?
former catchers such as Bochy
Bochy may be obsessed with getting production out of the catching position. Thats why all the talk about pinch running, and carrying a third catcher. And Fick has spent significant time at first and outfield. He used to hit productively--lifetime slug .405, though he hasn't reached that for 5 years. Yep, sounds like a swaggering gamey vet

No thanks
Our infield may be garbage but why would we be interested in a 33 year old who has put up OPS+ of 64, 77, 92 & 58 the last 4 seasons. Our internal options (Ortmeier, McClain, Leone, Harper) not put up numbers better than that (and all are predicted to)!

I'm starting to think...
...that the way Barry Zito got the Giants to offer him $126M was by hinting that in addition to pitching, he can also back up at catcher.
2008: My previous assessment may have been overly optimistic.
Not worth a new diary..
But Sabean on KNBR this morning said something to the fact that there were still trade discussions going on but with Lowry's injury the Giants weren't in a position to trade pitching, which is what people want.
Of course I completely disagree with that sentiment. If there is a trade to be made that benefits the Giants long term (Obviously non-Caincecum), it needs to be made regardless of how it impacts the first four weeks of this season, which is lost from the beginning.

Does anyone else remember
Fick getting into it with against the Giants when he was against the Nationals ( i think '06)?
I don't remember anyone of the details, but I remember getting the impression he was a tool/dick.

Fick
When the Padres won the division in 2005, he ran onto the field during the celebration and dumped an entire bottle of patron on bochy's head.
after that moment, i swore i'd never root for the guy again. what a waste. as a side bar, he is one of the ugliest human beings I've ever encountered.
On the other side of the coin, there is some "warrior spirit mentality" to wearing goggles during the postgame clubhouse celebration.

patron
if someone offered you free patron or alcohol, would you want it, or would you knock it and try to impress someone with your knowledge of alcohol - facts like "its actually only about 60% tequila, the rest is rum and vodka mixed in."
who cares if it's overpriced? it belongs down someone's throat, not in someone's hair. there are starving kids in ethipopia related to Velez that need tequila.
