Down OFF the Farm

For fans of the AA-and-below set... news of the latest round of cuts.

For longtime readers of Steve S's Minor Lines reports on here, you've got some familiar names.   The Giants have finally given up on Marcus Sanders' shoulder.  Will Thompson and Joey Dyche depart, too, after having tough seasons.

No surprises, but I'll admit I'm sad for Sanders.  If memory serves, I  got to see him leg out his only triple in San Jose, and dang, he's fast.  Too bad no one employs an all-speed DH.

No..

No clue. As I recall he really only showed up for the minor league games when they started. But he's not on the member list for the new site under a name that includes "Steve"

MIA

For better or worse, I've pretty much taken a break this winter. I am looking forward to the seasong getting started and seeing how the minor league rosters come out. My schedule has become increasingly busy and remains very busy, so my ability to contribute this season may be diminished.

He's Alive!

We'll take whatever you're able to give steve.

Good to see you, Steve.

I know that feeling. Glad to see you're still with us, even if it's in a diminished role.

Speaking of did you get the emails from me and Brute about doing the minor lines?

Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

The big surprise to me

...was Chad Rothford being cut. Because we all know that our minor league system is overrun with big power-hitters who play corner defensive positions. Yeah, way too many of those kinds of guys. Get us some short, speedy types instead, Brian! This goofy "Power and Offense" philosophy has got to go.

Unfortunately last season at SK Chad seemed to need a jobu idol to get his bat to like the breaking pitch. I'm sad to see him go but I don't think he was getting much playing time in camp from what I saw.

Come on, Lyle, criticism is cheap and easy. There are only 4 corner positions per team. There was no place for Bradford - unless you want to take developmental time away from better prospects. You want Vilallona getting less playing time so Bradford can play?

by allfrank on Mar 25, 2008 12:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course it's cheap and easy

..but it's also my opinion. I don't think we have enough potential power-hitters in our system to be tossing aside a 22-yr-old, 6'5" 1B with power. He certainly didn't dominate the NWL. And he shouldn't take away AB's from Villalona or D'Alessio or Pill. But, Frank, are you telling me there's not a roster spot for him somewhere? As nice a year as Bobby Felmy had last year, for example, I'd rather give Chad a shot this year than Bobby. Yes, Felmy is an OF; my point is that smart roster management should allow us a few projects like Rothford.

Even BruteSentiment was also surprised that Rothford was let go.
