Guess this means Velez and Castillo are here to stay

damn..

we are losing infielders faster than we can sign for center fielders. Oh well, Velez is a lock for making the team now. If Ort can't make it, expect Velez/Castillo to be your 3rd/2nd base platoon behind gimpy Durham. With Aurilia taking 1st. Oh course, this could be big news for Rohlinger getting further looks. Now, if Lewis can play first...

by pittsburghian on Mar 24, 2008 3:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Velez

Should already be a lock to make the team. I just got back from watching the White Sox and Brewers games in Scottsdale this weekend, and Velez was by far the most exciting player on the field. Any time he gets on base, he is immediately in scoring position, and it is his type of player that will generate the most runs for us. Sure his defense is a little suspect, but he's about the only dynamic offensive player that we could have.

Frandsen

unbelievable. Terrible break for the kid. No more complaining about claiming Castillo off of waivers. I still hope they trade Durham though.

Oh Christ that's terrible news. What a painful and difficult injury to have. I was writing up a ST report for SF Dugout on Saturday and got news that his injury was only minor, then I read on the Merc that he could open the season on the DL, now this.

Terrible. I feel for the guy.

With his scrappiness, he'll just wrap it in duct tape and be back on the field next week.

Ah well. At least we can play Durham now and not feel bad about it. And that's also probly good for us, because if he keeps up what he's done so far this spring, he'll be very tradeable at the deadline. But I hope he can heal and come back soon.

by boonitez on Mar 24, 2008 4:36 PM PDT reply actions

Durham

The depressing thing though, is that if Durham plays well & is tradeable at the deadline, Sabean won't trade him because of a lack of a replacement!

Roster set?

I think this injury sets the roster atleast in the 13 non-pitching spots unfortantly barring a trade.

1. Catcher: Bengie Molina
2. Catcher: Eliezer Alfonzo

3. First Base: Dan Ortmeier

4. Second Base: Ray Durham
5. Second Base: Eugenio Velez

DL Shortstop: Omar Vizquel
6. Shortstop: Jose Castillo

7. Third Base: Rich Aurilia

8. Outfield: Aaron Rowand
0. Outfield: Randy Winn
10. Outfield: Dave Roberts
11. Outfield: Fred Lewis

12 & 13. Brian Bocock, Ryan Rohlinger, Justin Leone, Rajai Davis

by Madtown Bomber on Mar 24, 2008 5:03 PM PDT reply actions

That's the way I see it. I'd bet money that 12 & 13 are Bocock and Davis, at least to start the season, with Bocock being sent down when Vizquel comes off the DL.

This is NOT the way I wanted to see Velez win a roster spot.

Bad for Frandsen--he may never have the same opportunity for ABs again.

But to be a Giants fan now? Seriously, this is like being chained to a seat being forced to watch a Beckett play performed by deaf mutes in a community theater.

Absurd, torturous, and yet strangely liberating.

by lettinitfly on Mar 24, 2008 8:38 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed. Frandsen looked like a promising infielder who was somewhere in-between a building block and a stop-gap. But now this creates not only a dark cloud, but facilitates the need to keep Durham for possibly the whole season unless we bottom out like the Tigers did a few years back.

How come I'm having a feeling Sanchez and a mid-level prospect are going to be gone by mid-May for bats we need, but are forced to take on aka over-aged prospects?!

by daveinexile on Mar 25, 2008 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I am wondering if the Giants training staff dropped the ball on this one. I mean, he's had achilles trouble for 2 weeks. They must have done an MRI, right? Wouldn't that show something such that they could either say, "naw, it's healing," or "damn, this looks bad, better not run him out there, yet?"
The other bad news, and there can't be any other kind with this, is, based on the Julian Peterson experience, isn't it 2 years before one has a full recovery?

by allfrank on Mar 24, 2008 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

There might be something there...but usually with an achilles, if it's slight or just nagging, it can be hard to diagnose. It just seems they wanted him to test it and the worst possible thing happened. I don't know if they'd risk losing him if there was a significant risk it would give out...but I'll keep open the "horror door". As for recovery time, I'm not quite sure how the injury plays in baseball. In football, the achilles plays to the total speed factor. Given Frandsen could lose some and still be effective, maybe he loses some range and at worst would have to be a first/third baseman. Probably retards his development and we don't seem him until winter ball at the earliest. Hopefully the achilles injury is like what an ACL tear is to a hockey player, in that the recovery time is reduced.

Yea..

Ruptured Achilles Tendons are no joking matter. My dad had one and was in a cast for around a month, month and a half and then went to a walking cast for 3 or 4 more months after that. He's now able to even hike fine, he healed totally. He's always wary though. He couldn't even walk with it ruptured, and if it would have ruptured in the backcountry he probably could not have gotten out on his own.

Funny thing is, when he ruptured it he was walking from the camera to join the group for a timed picture. And he just fell down and thought someone hit him in the ankle with a baseball bat.

by WalrusMan on Mar 24, 2008 11:27 PM PDT reply actions

This is terrible. He might not get another chance to start. Sabean won't trade Durham unless there is someone to give the job to, say, Velez or Castillo. Then, next year, Frandsen has to compete against someone who has now "proven" they can play the position at the BL level. With so much riding on 50 spring AB's, it could go anyway.

It's too bad, he deserved a shot to start this year.

I guess now we have to put our future hopes on Lewis, Velez and *sigh* Ortmeier...

i just hope this doesnt mean his career....that would more than suck

and why do you ask a player to test out an achilles when you know that a rupture could be career ending

by bacci40 on Mar 25, 2008 1:12 AM PDT reply actions

Josh Barfield

the Giants should try to acquire this guy from the Indians. He's shown good ability at times, but lost his job this spring to Asdrubal Cabrera.

I imagine the Indians would want some pitching in return, which I would be ok with as long as it isn't a core guy.

Bonds stands alone.
