My Baseball Roadtrip

This coming summer a good friend and I are going on the fabled "baseball roadtrip" and seeing a game at every park. The friend wasn't a baseball guy until a year or so ago, at which point my constant nagging converted him to a Giants fan. As such, he'll probably hate me for the next couple of years. Anyway, our prior planned visit to Europe was scrapped for something infinitely better. We've been saving and planning for the better part of a year now, and the whole thing is starting to really pick up pace. Either that, or I'm just getting pumped that baseball is back on radio and TV.

I leave good ol' San Luis Obispo on the 11th of June (during finals!) to head up and meet my friend, then catch a game at Oakland. After that, we head down the coast catching the SoCal teams (enemy territory), Arizona, then back up for a wedding in Auburn and off to Seattle. From there, we hit Colorado and pretty much loop around the US. At the very end, we'll be coming back to hit a game at the Phone Booth (September 5th). Just in time to see Timmy pitch a no-no, and Schierholtz to hit his 30th homer of the year. A guy can dream, no?

In any case, we've got a bunch of things in place, so I figure I'd give you all a heads-up. We've got a little blog at www.thebaseballroadtrip.com detailing our plan and route, and a link to our facebook group as well (about 50 people so far!). We're hoping to build up a little hype about it so we can write a book chronicling our trip across America, and perhaps score a few free tickets if at all possible. I talked to a guy who has done the trip before who gave me some nice pointers on who to email, but I don't have my hopes set too high on that.

Either way, I'll have a laptop and a nice, shiny camera with me, so we'll be updating the blog often once June hits. Additionally, I'll stop in here and post some updates at the cove for you guys when I get a chance. I'll see us play at Wrigley and Turner field before we head back to SF.

We'll be using a site called CouchSurfing to crash with random people along the way to keep our costs low. It seems pretty legit, and hopefully we won't get killed along the way . If any of you displaced Giants' fans out there happen to have a room to spare for a day or two, though, let me know! If not, and you want to catch a game or just have a beer when we're in town, give me a shout! It'd be great to chat and put some names to faces. I set up an email addy for just this purpose: thebaseballroadtrip@gmail.com. Creative, I know. Finally, have any of you all done the trip before? Anyone have any tips? We're trying to cover all our bases early so we don't end up stranded in the middle of Florida with no cash; a fate far worse than death. I know there's a good travel-guide or two out there about the parks, but I figure I'll post on a few other (select) boards in towns we'll be spending a long time in.

Whew...sorry for the long post.

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
I'm so jealous (except for the part about crashing with random strangers but you can probably handle that). Have a great time. I tried to do a midwest baseball road trip last April and my White Sox game got SNOWED OUT.
Still the proud parent of Notgardo Alfonzo; hoping for a perfect spring.

Stupidest thing this year:
Opening day Chicago vs Milwaukee.  Milwaukee has an indoor stadium if they need it.  Unfortunately, the game is at Wrigley.

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
I'm trying to see every park, but I don't have the free time or the funds to do it at once. Of course I've done Pac Bell, and I live near Seattle right now so I've caught a few Mariners games, and last year the Navy sent me to the East Coast, so, naturally, I took advantage and caught games in Philly, Baltimore, and D.C. This time I'll spend some time in SD, so a Padres game and (if I can make it) opening day in LA is in order. Hopefully I can get tickets and get to NY before those parks close. Then I want to knock out a few parks a year, but it'll take awhile.

I'll definitely be checking out the blog and living vicariously through your spectacular travels. My only piece of advice: do your research on the places to get cheesesteaks in Philly. If I knew what I know now, I wouldn't have wasted 7 bucks on the mediocre pile of bread and meat I stumbled upon my day in Philly.

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
Sounds awesome.  Like you, I want to make it to every park someday.  I have a mini ballpark roadtrip scheduled for this summer, when a buddy of mine and I hit Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Cincy, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Minnesota in that order.  After that trip, I will have been to 20 of the ballparks.  Enjoy yourself, and I will check in on the blog.

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
I'm doing a mini-AL swing in late August/early September if my scheduling works out right. I'm due in Tampa at the end of August for a wedding and visiting my dad in Detroit after the wedding. Both the Rays and Tigers are home that week I'm traveling. So for now, that's my fun little road trip.

Doing the full road trip to all 30 stadiums is on my "Things To Do Before I Die" list, for sure. Have fun!

Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

There are other ways to spend your loot
Every one of these round robin roadies I've ever heard of becomes a grueling grind of endurance, especially through the sticky summer and the nondescript midwest landscape, towns and teams.

If I were you, I'd spend the money more profitably on, like, half a dozen different trips to Hawaii.

But you are on a mission. Let neither reason nor pleasure dissuade you from your glorious, yet dubious object.

Good luck. Be there, or somewhere. Aloha.

Remember to look under the cushions of those random couches for extra swagger. We're gonna need it.

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
The only non-Giants/A's park I was going to have a chance to see a game at this summer is Atlanta and it turns out that they'll be in... San Francisco! while I'm there. My life, so hard. :(

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
I, like many, have dreamed of the same sort of thing. Maybe one day when I become a professor and have the summers off.

Will complete the west coast tour this summer when I visit Seattle and Oakland. The wife hasn't been to LaLa land so we'll head there too.

You ought to hit a Grizzlies game if you have the time. As you probably know, it's only a couple hours from SLO.

Re: My Baseball Roadtrip
I did the same kind of thing back in '89 (almost 20 years ago? Egad...).  Anyway, got see old Tiger and Comiskey before they went away, as well as Olympic, Three Rivers, Riverfront, County, and the Vet.  Didn't see them all (18, I think, and missed Camden, which was fairly new at the time), but the next year, we went down to SoCal to see Jack Murphy, Dodger, and the Big A.  What's amazing to me is how many of those stadia are now gone.  With Yankee and Shea scheduled to be replaced, that trip is beginning to acquire a sepia-like patina, like all those ancient stills of Forbes Field and the Polo Grounds.  Man, I'm getting old.  Anyway, have fun, and enjoy Wrigley and Fenway.
